When you put the cup on top does it act like an extension of the second pendulum? or is it kind of like a third pendulum? very cool.

Cool...I am learning H2 optimal control using LMI's...once I am through I'll try to simulate something like this...although I don't have the hardware to do a physical model like you have

The sound is the DC motor switching direction rapidly. DC motors in these applications are usually gear reduced for power and there is slight play in the mechanics.

Is it a double or a signle pendulum? Maybe you are tightening the joint between them?
