@Nik3AllSt4r they did change the graphics a bit for free to play , this vid was before. I do know what your talking about, they did change the lighting and other effects for lower end computers. You can still turn them up and it looks pretty good, I had to mess with it for awhile to get it to look like it did in the video after F2P launch. give it a try, hope this helps.
I remember Star Trek game for the SNES and Sega Genisis. That game was extremely fun and addictive. I just wonder why they don't make games like that nowadays, technology is much better but its like they don't even care anymore.
@Matt68046 I hear ya, it would be nice if they did make an mmo like those older games. I think its more the game engine limitations then anything to support a large amount of players. One day it will happen, just takes time and more tech.
So far I'm enjoying it a lot more than the last big MMO that went F2P (DC Universe Online). STO does such a better job of making you feel like you're in THAT universe. Love my Next Gen Film uniform! Freaking cool.
@PogueSquadron they really have made it better over the last 2 years, with little things. The upcoming featured episodes will make it even better. I agree on DCUO, the dc comic universe is just to big to play out in just 2 cities. I'm sure they will add more to spice it up, or hope they do rather. STO really did a great job including lore from all the shows. DCUO is still young, they could pull it off in time.
@MMOlook Yeah I don't know if I'll stick with it, as I tend to burn out with these games quickly, but I think the Star Trek universe suits itself well for this kind of stuff. With the superhero games, they have to fill the cities with HUNDREDS of robots and stuff, haha. At that point it doesn't really feel like the places from the comics. Who the hell would live in that Metropolis?? :-p
I feel the World of Warcraft vibe but the game is relevant to me because of orcs and elves I have characters from my beloved and epic television show that has captivated me for my entore life and I am 36 now. This game was $50 US when it first launched and then went free to play which I think was the greatest thing ever to happen to a game. I really enjoy it and even though i just started it i do not feel lost in any way. Graphics are outstanding and movement is the traditional wsad type.
@316Teejay316 I agree, its alot of fun. Its going to get even better now, since they are going to be adding more featured episodes, they are going to be adding it like it was a tv series episode. This is what they had planned for a longtime to do, if they keep doing these I see nothing but good things for sto.
So how free to play is it exactly? Too many 'free to play' games try to trap you, I'm installing it now via steam, but any early insight would be helpful.
@wonkehcheetah1138 I think its a pretty good for free to play. All the content is free, granted you can get everything in the game for free, it will just take some time to farm the dilithium( thats the only problem I see with it), you can trade this stuff for C-points, to buy different ships. Just takes some farming and time to get the cool ships and other things.
When choosing a career, does that affect the ground combat only? Since it seems like all space skill trees are universal. Are all space abilities shared?
@MagicAccent All the space abilities and ground stack. Some players balance it between the two, while others lean toward one over the other. Each career class are better at certain things(healing for science, etc.), but they can all have a strong ground and space game. hope this helpls.
That makes sense. But what really confuses me is this: If I as an engineer choose to level Starship Attack Patterns. Doesn't that only help tactical career players? Since they're the only ones that have the attack pattern abilities. Or are they?
Sorry for bombarding you with questions, but I can't seem to find the info anywhere :P
@MagicAccent they revamped the skills system at F2P launch, I think it works like this: My character is tactical , but I put some points into science (since you have to assign points other then your class) ,if my science officer has those skills that are in the list in the tree, then those buffs would work. You can train your officers with different skills. I'm pretty sure this is how it works. I might be wrong, but pretty sure this is how it goes.
They are 2 different games. It all depends on what your looking for. Sto is an action mmo, and you can blow through the content pretty fast. Its heavy instanced like other cryptic games, and the game engine they use limits alot of the things they can do space wise. The game is fun, but it is not anywhere as deep as EVE. I suggest you give it a try, I've met EVE players that both loved it and hated it.
Dumn question i saw your fleet as UFP i was in a fleet when i played call ufp and i was wondering if we might have played together i was tagged at @ICETOGO
This game is great. It has been far better then the poor reviews i read when it first came out. Its well made and is very "Star Trek". They did a great job incorporating all things star trek into this and even tactfully added to the star trek cannon.
@oducayen I agree, the game is alot of fun and follows the cannon. I"ve played off and on since launch, those reviews were right on though. They had alot of problems, and the only thing that kept them going was the hard core Star Trek fan base. The game has come along way, and in its current form is really fun. The content droughts really put a strain on paying subscribers, lets hope F2P brings more updates.
@oducayen On top of that, they are reaching the 2 year mark come Febuary. They have listened to the fans, and added things the fans wanted in the game. It has really changed in the 2 year run, I still sub support it, who knows how frequent the updates will be, but I bet they will be faster then before.
@MMOlook The foundry looks like it is a limitless source of story content. I would like to see them hire voice actors to read the top 3 missions each week.( I hate reading in video games). They should make the ship customization more in-depths like the character creator and make more to do in the interiors. Im only level 25 so i dont know how the end game is, but with enough "episodes" I could spend some time in the game for years to come.
One of the great things, characters created and leveled when you previously subscribed. You do not loose any inventory slots, bank slots, ship slots etc... You do not need to spend real money, to get stuff from the c-store. I used the dilithium exchange, and got some ships and stuff. Only gripe with this is lack of content, content to me is story driven missions. Not ships these are fluff or shinies, or pointless pve grindfest missions. Give the Klinks some love, otherwise no new factions.
For every space MMO these things should be a must:
- Completely open and persistent universe/sectors, all of them.
- Free/Open-world PvP in every sector, FreeForAll - NOT RvR/Faction vs Faction, at all times
- Twich-based manual gameplay/aiming, not this point-n-click BS.
- Not integrated but POSSIBLE every kind of Role Playing - Pirates/Mercenaries/Military/Factions, etc. It should be for clans and players to decide what they will do.
Just FYI, your inventory does not expand as you level. You have to buy additional inventory space. Also, you *can* buy anything if you save up your dilithium, but keep in mind that you can convert 8,000 dilithium per day, and it costs about 480,000 to buy enough C-Points for a single ship that costs 1600 C-Points (@ roughly 300 dilithium per C-Point on the Dilithium Exchange as of 1/17/12). That averages out to ridiculous.
@njdss4 Well, I meant on rank up for the inventory space not level. If they changed that, thank you, I will edit & make a tag in the video. They did say they would adjust the dilithium rate as needed. That does sound ridiculous, but it should change, since that would force the pay to play model to much. Thankd for the heads up.
@MMOlook No problem. The inventory space is definitely static until you pay for more, as I've leveled my science character from Commander 24 to Rear Admiral 48 during the F2P Early Access and I haven't gotten an increase of inventory space despite ranking up three times (Commander to Captain, Captain to RA Lower, and RA Lower to RA Upper).
It feels like STO is the kind of game you can pick up, get to VA 50 in a week or two, and walk away having done everything the game has to offer.
@njdss4 I read the leveling system was tweaked and you could max out in days. I'm not sure why they did this, since they really don't have that much end game to do. Thanks again.
I couldn't install this cause it asked for a key to activate as well to continue to install. Since i didn't have a key i couldn't finish installing it. =_= wasting my time.
@Girx2010 The game will go free to play on jan 17th, what they have open now, is for the players that use to subscribe, they can get early access to the free to play model (why there asking for the product keys). You can play on the 17th. Just five more days.
@MMOlook Ah i forgot wow im a idiot. Sorry =_= i just thought it was able to be played since it was downloadable but i forgot about the paying users being able to access the free model early. Thanks for replying & reminding me. Sorry i wasted your time to an obvious answer.
It will be free to play in january, thats what I said in my intro. I didn't forget about the KDF, they can't play them at level 1, so I didn't put them in. It was a short review of some of the features. I plan on doing a couple of more videos , showing more gameplay and going into the KDF, since we still have little over a month before F2P. I didn't even say anything about the major content update they have coming in Febuary. Thanks for Feedback.
This is not "free-to-play". Would you work for free? Didn't think so! =)
You also forgot to mention the inability to start a fresh KDF character from level 1 (you have to grind on UFP until level 25 first), due to a severe lack of Klingon content, despite Cryptic's original promises since 2008.
@Thorzanek I do see your point though, on the promise of cryptic. They are under new ownership, And things are going to change. I've played sto off and on since launch also.
