i've learned a ton from john, as well as jimi, curtis mayield and jimmy nolen (james brown) and what john says here about being deep in the groove and having fun with it is the most important, way more than anything technical he could tell you. Muting strings to get a choppy, percussive sound is crucial to the funk/soul riff, but once you add that melody to it, those smooth little licks that really fill out the basic chord, you really make that guitar SINGGGGGG.......

Besides, who is to say John doesn't have soul when compared to Derek Trucks? John has his own style, so does Derek. They are both great players, why not enjoy them both for what they are.
