  • I rode a standardbred named Road-Kar and he fell on the racetrack and broke his leg. He had to get minor surgery to fix the issue, except he couldn't race anymore, so my riding I structor rescued him and he is an amazing trotter!

  • When I was young, I used to be think the Standardbred was very ugly because they have big head and I'm very stupid to think about this.

Now I rode the STB named Lady, she was ex-race pacer and now became schoolmaster horse.

I know other one STB named Bob and he can jump around 1.30 m!

Also STB is very good for the kids and they can do everything just like warmblood, TBs and other breeds. :)

    I love them.

  • I work with Standardbreds at a racing and breeding stable. They are the most amazing horses =D I am trying to sell my TB currently with the plan of gettin one of my STBs after he has finished racing to jump =D

  • im in the stage of training my very fist STB. she paces quite a lot and it doesnt bother me at all, because i KNOW that one day she is going to have a kick-ass canter! she is amazing at jumping and showing heaps of potential in dressage.

this video was truly inspiring! xx

  • when we think of X racers, we always think of thoroughbreds, never a thought spared for the strange little trotting horses! but next time, i wont be so stuck up about standardbreds, Albert Trotter, youve changed my opinion entirely!

  • he lives in the field all the time and is calm and placid, we have been retraining him, and i have to say, he has a better attitude than any of my posh dressage warmbloods!!! hes so willing and sweet! hes being gelded next month and being turned into a hunting pony, being only 14.1 and im 5 foot 9, he cant stay with me forever, but i have no doubt that he will make someone an amazing loyal pony! we have named him albert trotter lol. this video is very inspirational for me! TBC!!!

  • honestly, i thought standardbreds were absolutely vile. i hate the trotter way of going and i thought they were just racehorses for pikeys! last month for no reason i bought a 7 year old standardbred from the meatman. he was covered in his own faeces from head to toe, and just looked like a mess. id never felt more regret in my life!!! the next day, we bathed him and trimmed him and he suddenly looked really quite good looking! he has a very bad weaving problem, TBC! run out of room

  • my baby boy is standardbred , and hes the love of my life ! hes absolutely perfect , we always win our command classes because he has such strong walk/trot and even has a great canter ! and hes amazing in small gymkhanas because hes sooo fast and has tight turns for barrels and all ! he also loooves to jump . i love him . i could never imagine him as a race horse :( that would be sooo sad !

  • I have one. I didn't know that I had bought a Standarbred at the time since he was hitched up to a rather heavy wagon (not that he couldn't pull it) and he was rather underweight. When he came to our home he had a mange problem and quite a bit of scarring. It took some time and energy to get him back. His past wasn't racing but "teasing". But despite all that, he's the sweetest, calmest horse we have. Bud's the only horse I trust. Doesn't kick or buck.

  • Hi I have 2, a stud that is 4 and I've had since he was a yearling, the other a claimer that I race, but am breaking to ride, and will show eventuallly, the stud was bought to race in order to pay for himself, but first and foremost for an eventer, they are amazing horses, my husband first sold them to me and now after years of other breeds, and 20 years of stb, I choose stbs first and foremost, they are the best and most versatile of all breeds. go stbs!!!

  • I love this video, im in the process of retraining my standardbred and it really has made me fall in love with this breed, truly the most gentle and easy going breed!

  • Standardbreds are the best! I work with 12 of them and they are all my buddy. The owner retires them and they have it good after the races. I took a 17 year old for a short jog this morning and she loved it. We even have a blind one...she does quite well for herself. She does have her 2 daughters and grand-daughter with her though. Awesome to watch...I love them :)

  • this video, is so gr8, it certainly approves the stb, they're beautiful if only people gave them a chance.

  • I just recently purchased a standeredbred. He was going to the mennonights so i more rescued him the purchased him

  • When i was thinking of getting my horse which is a standie everyone tried talking me out of it. One person sed tht all they can do is race and they are no good at anything. They cnt canter and jump. I finally got my horse who is quiet as. When i hear the standardbred i think..Quiet horses and amazing ones to. I cnt believe so many people would be againest satndies but i believe tht standies are the most amazing horse out there :)

  • I have a standie :) he's the best horse I could ever ask for, my coach reckons he'll be jumping a 1.1m easy

  • Power to the Standies!

I am training a 3YO who i nearly have to beat to trot ( he never made it on teh track because he was too slow of a trotter LOL) he is still a baby but is very curious about cantering and jumping EVERYTHING! He is honest and fun as can be. no bad habits at all. Once we master teh canter I will iintroduce basic dressage movements and Jumping.

  • I've only ever worked with one, but he's got the biggest personality! You should check out my videos of him :P he's in all the videos with "Ned" in the title.

He's known as "Nutty Ned" and he really is. He's hard work and a pain in the next sometimes, but I wouldn't change him!

I believe any horse can be a good friend, if given the chance, regardless of the breed.

    Lovely video!

  • I have two standardbreds. And they are the most amazing horses you can get. So loyal and trusting. I dont know what i would do with out my boys they do anything for you!!!

  • dont judge a book by its cover.

standys can do lots i rescue them and make tham into what they can be if you give them a chance.

i was at a show and i was riding little black and shes my standy and i herd this girl say eww look at that what is it oh its a standy all there good at is racing and falling on there faces and when i got first and she placed 6 th she came up to me and appologised and i said good you should there not just for racing they just lke any othere horse.

  • Love it!

  • i am training a stb and he is amazing, ive ridden him twice so far and he tries so hard and is so smart. he races until he was 10, then ridden twice, and then sat for like 5 months. and then i got on him and he did nothing! not all standardbreds hav the physical ability to jump high and do dressage, but that it the same with all breeds. and all the standardbreds i have known are so willing!

  • And most people saying they're worthless for riding doesn't have any better idea on what to do with them either.

Not sure I'll ever buy another breed, they're just soo cooperative, responsive and fun to ride and train. My Crow; multigaited standardbred performing the flatwalk, rack, trot and canter, nearing passage and piaff. Nearing levade in hand and goal is terre-a-terre :P

  • I had a standardbred :D They have the most amazing jump in them,!

  • Standardbreds are amaing horses. I have one standardbred mare and she is the BEST horse i ever had. She was so easy to train she has a lovely canter also. And she can lope and do western pleasure. So for people who say they are hard to train are CRAZY lol.

  • Thanks so much for doing this vid on Stdbds. In high school I had an awesome Stdbd mare who was an ex-pacer who raced sound until she was 12 years old. She turned out to be the most awesome non-spooky & dependable trail horse - right off the track! Sensible, easy-going, sweet natured, not spooky, dependable, & loyal are all words I can think for describing this breed. I'd recommend adopting one of these great, versitile horses to anyone!

  • Your video is very inspiring! Thank you for posting it.

  • a subb 4:

    agreeing with me

being fiar to thies beautiful horses

    showing others what you think

Advicing to standardbreds as a "buying avalable" horse

    amazing pictures

also realizing the horre about horse racing <33

    THANKS YOU SO MUCH <33!!!

  • My aunt has a rescue Standardbred named Lucky!!! He is my favorite lol

  • It's really annoying how people think standardbreds are good for absolutely nothing but racing. I have two, one of them is 9 years now and I never had much of a problem with getting him to canter, and he certainly does not have bad balance. The other one is 4, I just started riding him and he is so easy and gentle.

  • @egernhat the best part about them is their disposition. They're so willing to please an the only reason people have trouble with the canter is because they aren't patient enough with them. They just take time to switch gears from "race horse" to "please do what i ask" horse. haha

  • @randomgirl179 I agree, I know all horses are different of course, but I've had 3 standardbreds now and they have all been so sweet and willing :)

  • i have a standardbred and she has the most lovely canter ever =] she's 13 and doesn't race any more but they're horses just like any other breed, thoroughbreds aren't kept strictly to the racetrack so why should standardbreds? =]

  • I have an STB..

    18hh, and a total sweetheart..

Came out of Barnett Hanover and Athia..

    I love him

  • Lovely video! I just adopted a standie from the Standardbred Assc of Qld. He is awesome, 5 yrs never been under saddle and I gave him his first walk under saddle the other day, didnt bat an eyelid, the should be renamed superbreds!!

  • check out STBblog, it's my new blog I created on youtube specifically for STB owners

  • I am going to adopt a stadie gelding X pacer tommorow!

  • STANDARDBREDS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!

  • actually they don't all go to the slaughterhouses if nobody wants them they go to the Amish were i live they take amazing care of them.

  • My sister has an ex-trotter and has recently taught him how to canter. To our suprise he is amazing at X country and brings dozens of ribbons back and is quite good at showjumping (1m) people really need to open their eyes and realize that they really are amazing.

  • My answer to the first question in the video, " what do you think of when you hear the word standardbred?" my answer is an amazing horse. I'm looking into getting my first horse soon, he's a standardbred. When I went to go see him for the first time, I was the first person ever to get on him bareback, no one ever tried as he's green and hasn't been ridden a ton. I'll have a lot of work to do with him, but we're perfect for each other. I can't wait to get him!

  • good luck with him, if you need any advice, let me know :]

  • Thanx!

  • =] x x

  • awesome video... I have a 9 yo standardbred pacer. Couldn't race due to OCD in his hock but we compete in reining after I got his hock fixed.

  • look up turnNburn84 and tell him about your STB, he's been trying to find people who do western events with them :]

  • what type of events? like barrel racing, or racing off track?

  • he wants to get one and barrel race with it.

  • My standardbred came off the track with injuries in both front legs and after a couple of years off came back to be a wonderful hunter. I am currently showing him in the low adult hunter divisons :) No one can believe he's a standardbred!

  • my horse has leg injurys all around, he was in a wreck his first race, and messed up his front legs and his back left leg, and skined up his right leg really bad. and almost broke his neck.

  • Wooow Reallly Great Video I Love Standardbreds <3

  • this almost made me cryy. im re-training a sb pacer for hunseat.

at :35 it looks so much like my mare (not the sickly part, just coloring)

she was abused, neglected, and firepinned. check out my vid's of her now, she's the bay horse on my page.

"cam's jujubean' her great grandsire was cam fella.

  • they have a comfy canter.

    lol

  • not if they werent trained to canter...

    especially an ex-pacer

  • yea but when you train them to canter correctly, most of them are ridiculously smooth.

  • oh yea i knoww, im just saying if they werent trained to canterr =]]

  • Actually they can natually canter

you just have to teach them they can canter

its easy you just take them up a big hill

they find it easier to canter uphill so they will canter and that will catch on on the flat ground

you also do this to get them out of pacing they cant pace uphill

  • this entire statement makes no sense. Of course they can naturally canter, so can EVERY horse, most of them have just been trained not to previously, so you have to retrain them to canter instead of pace. and yes, they can pace uphill, it's just as easy.

  • You dont have to teach a standardbred to canter you have to teach it that its alright to canter since when they race they are not alowed to canter but some trainers do canter there horses around the track during training just depends on the trainer

Yes it is true they CAN pace uphill but they find it easier to trot uphill so they will trot then this will kick in on the ground aswell

I know loads of people who have used this to get the horses out of pacing

  • oh my goshh,

1: i know every horse can canter.

2: i have a stb, so yes, i know what im talking about.

    3. my stb can canter, but she cant hold it.

    4. (this is towards all4pharlap) hills are not the best method to use, seeing as i do not have hills where i live. and cantering up hills is not good for the horses hocks, so do research before you go spitting off 'advice'

  • bahaha. i love you :]

  • Excuse me

My family has been involved in horses for ever and each one has been involved with Standardbreds more than any other breed of horse.

Yes Running them uphill can be bad but it doesn't hurt them if you take them up one one in a while

It is easier for them to canter up a hill that on flat when they are first learning

and i would know this because as i said

SBs have been in my life more than any of breed of horse

so please get your facts right.

  • uhmm maybe you just dont know how to train horses? yes. that is what i have concluded.

because to train a horse, you have to be consistant with the training. if you only use hills to train your to canter, your only 'sometimes' training them to canter. then your horse will will only want to 'sometimes' canter!

its really not that hard hunny. there are much better ways to train a stb to canter, so why dont YOU get your facts straight, and then maybe you can give your so-called 'advice'

  • My standardbred was on the track till she pulled both tendons and then i got her for free and now she show jumps does every speed class and kicks but in hunt seat =D amazing video soon everyone will no how amazing and capable they are to doing it all XD awesome video!!!!!!!

  • Seeing the Standard bred in the western is also awesome, Im starting western with mine and its great to see others doing so well at it. Great vid too by the way, thanks or showing how great they are.

  • Surely all the people and horses in this vid would be proud to be in it to support the beautiful standies, I have one too, bought from pacing stables, love him to bits, he has more character than most people I know

  • a few of my friends/people i know are in thie video do you have their permission to use their photos?

  • i have a standaredbred, i have had him since the age of four and i have tought him how too jump and how the trot like any other horse.

he may have race the once but that was with his 1st owners.

he is doin the best that he can and YES they arnt just for racing they do have feeling and they have to be put in to fococe

  • woohoo :]

  • I have a six year old stb mare who didnt qualify for racing so my dad bought her 2 years ago. She appaerently has a "brith defect" as what the previous owner said so her back legs bend in when she walks but other than that ahe trots, lopes does figure 8, anything you ask she will try to do for you.She is an amazing horse, and no matter how many people say she can't do something i'm planning on taking her to some local shows this summer in western and english classes just for fun =)

  • awesome :]

    wish you luck :]

  • thank you verymuch aha

and im very glad you made this videoo!! =)

  • i agree with you; my aunt has a 17yo standardbred that im training to ride, has never been ridden a day in his life and was a million dollar winner and never once bucked and ive only been training him for 5 months and he is already jumping 2.6ft and was consistently trotting and not pacing within 2 weeks, and is now softening and doing dressage. got second (because he refused because he was frightened of the hay under and around the jump) at his first show!

  • arent the standardbreds ment to have brands on there knecks

  • we kept ours off the track and they went from bug eyed race horses to gentle old men who lived into their 30's. my last one is going to be 35 on halloween! they deserve our love and i'm thankful that i grew up around standardbreds. what a wonderful video!

  • i have to standardbreds one was bashed and nearly starved to death coz she didnt race well and the other one was also bashed based on her breed y do ppl hate sbs ????

  • 1:46 is my picture and i dont remember you asking or me telling you that yo can use it in your video :S

  • is your picture the one of the standardbred in some kind of western speed event? because i want to retrain one as a barrel and speed horse

  • yes he is, :) that picture was from 2 years ago tho

  • all retired standardbreds should go to the SRF and SPHO standardbred retirment foundation and standardbred pleasure horse organization

  • I have a retired, rescue standardbred. He was retired early because he wasn't making enough money...,His home, after retierment, starved him & his buddy...They then were rscued by SRF(Standardbred Retierment Fondation),& sent to the foster home where I met him & adopted him.

Standardbreds are wonderful horse & a morgority of them have great temperments(I know I've been around alot.. of them).

If any body is inrestend in adopting a one then you should check out SRF at adoptahorse org

  • awesome!!! ...one of our standies is actually in your video...we love em...

  • i luv standardbreds they are my fav breed and i have one and he is the best at show jumping and i luv him with all my heart hes name is Vonnie he is a standard bred 15.2 and liver chestnut

  • hey i think the pic at 1:45 is some kind of speed event =] standardbreds are amazing!

  • awesome =] standardbreds are so amazing, they arent just your average horse. anyone who says otherwise should just go and buy one, and then they will realise just how capable, gentle and scopey they are
