@dazkiltlfc having played both sports in southeast asia, I can conclude one thing. rugby is more of a contact sport...but American Football is a collision sport. the only hard hitting in rugby is during a tackle, where in football there is blocking. the first contact off the line of scrimmage for at least 5/11 players on the team is a head to head hit, hence the need for a helmet. our human anatomy is no different, if rugby players played football, they would need all the pads too...
