To me it looks more like a car failure, like rear suspension maybe. If he locked his brakes and spun you would think there would be the smoke from the tires?
Anyway, I don't think either of them got close to dying like some are saying... The F1 monocoque can easily withstand a crash like this (as the video shows!), although obviously it wasn't very nice for poor Sato, minding his own business!
dude.. he got scared... he slamd breaks and spun and slid.. lmfao but that was back then hes a diff driver now. still tho.. dont flinch.. makes ya loes :P
i remember this. good god i was fearing for sato's life at the moment. definately one the most near-death-crashes in F1 in the last ten years, if not the most
@NeoCon2K7 No, I think this is an uphill corner, not downhill. The track design did contribute to the accident, as there's a left-hand kink just before the right turn. That's stupid, because if a car has brake failure or loses control, they will go straight on instead of kinking left, and T-bone a car in front, as happened here. There's a similar corner at Melbourne, where there was a big crash in 2010 involving Kobayashi and Hulkenberg.
@back2frinky It depends. If 1 brake fails then it would veer inwards towards the brake that's working, so it probably would t-bone. By the way... how lucky was the Williams? Jesus.
I'd say it's neither Heidfeld's fault nor Sato's (how could it be Sato's? D:) It's lucky the BMW (?) didn't also get caught up in this accident. Nasty shunt.
Well... You said it was not Sato's fault, it was Heidfeld, well... How does that work? If the car snap oversteered, he was also a passenger in this accident.
i think closer to Montoyas nose without ripping it away would not have been possible. i would like to see a picture when Heidfeld crosses in front of Montoya.
I remember SchumiSaloZanardi, luckily she's had her account deleted, but a number of her videos contained wildly inaccurate descriptions. A true moron. Thanks for the upload.
A race for the history books! I was there and it`s one of the best races I have ever seen, A lot of action, yellow flags, takeovers, safetycar and of course Michaels win in the last second...with help from Barrichello and ......, the first time ever that the second price winner was on the top of the podium?...
This crash was really bad and I was sure that it was serious, but it was great that Sato came back fast!
That is retarded. Anyone in the know would agree. So being 12 pints behind should result in axing? Nick Heidfeld like any others are world class, that is the meaning of F1, did you not even realise how Kubica's lap times compared to Nick and Jacques as a test driver last year, obviously you haven't. Vettel is a phenomenom, World Series Renault to F1, only Raikkonen had made that kind of leap.
Hahaha, ScumiSaloZanardi sent me several harassing PMs over YouTube to me using a different user account called SSZ1. What, did she think I wouldn't figure it was her? She said she's a photographer and that she was there. Wow, what an idiot.
I remember watching this grand prix live, back in the day, and Brundle said something like Heidfeld broke too hard because he say the smoke of Sato's lock-up. True, it was Heidfeld's fault for over-reacting to the smoke, but it's an understandable racing accident.
Although he had been in F1 for two years prior to this, so it can't really be called a "rookie" mistake, which is why he is to be "blamed" - he should have known better.
My mistake, sorry! There was a lock-up, though. BTW my comment was not meant to try and incriminate Sato, either. Sato was completely innocent here and the Williams driver there was very lucky.
Yeah, I realised that, not trying to jump down your throat or anything - just clarfying. I remember watching this live, and remember Martins comment about the lock-up. Cheers.
Anyone see her comments on the Mika/Schumacher incident at Macau...? lol ...I got told to "shut up child". She probably thinks she can influence people's minds on some famous incidents to suit her blind Schumi love by incorrectly describing video's...funny thing is by posting the video everyone can see what actually happened.
On her description she talks about how Hakkinen made a mistake and even went as far as saying she had pictures of him crying sraight after the incident. I commented and the next thing I know I'm banned and my comment was deleted.
I emailed him saying it was wrong, in a very nice fashion, and what I got back was "how DARE you tell me what to do" (very childish) and he was ranting about Sato's "fan club" that apparantly exists on youtube (I've yet to find it). He hates Sato, because he's Japanese. He's a racist bastard and should be banned from Youtube.
He clearly knows what he's talking about because he knows his dates and history and stuff. It's plain to see that Heidfeld smashed into Sato, and it's not like it wasn't a memorable moment..

Sato wasn't that bad. He was dubbed the best Japanese racer ever on his first BAR season where he had some random good results. But on the second season, people hoped he'd add consistancy to those results, but he showed neither and an incredible lack of responsability.

Ya I was trying to put a comment on that stupid description he posted as well, completely inaccurate. Did Heidfelds rear wing fail or something, I cant remember clearly.
The guy in front that smoked his tyres was Alex Yoong. That threw Nick Heidfeld off and he braked really hard on cold brakes which caused his car to snap-oversteer.
Yeah, I noticed that the other video has been completely explained wrong and your version is correct. It was Heidfeld going into Sato at the AUT GP 2002 and Sato went to hospital.
