  • Tear.......drop........

  • It's sure worth a listen or TEN...

    excellent, great job on this.

    Chucklez

  • sounds a lot like "the sea and me" also by jerry byrd and marty

  • Just beautiful.... thanks for posting.

  • Derek .. Yes..

  • I listen to this.

    Its great.

    How would I tune a conventional 6-string lap steel ? E,C,A,G,E,C# ?

    Normally I use E,C#,A,E,C#,A

  • I think the best way to tune a Hawaiian steel guitar is from the lowest string: C, E, G, A , C, E. This tuning really gives you good, Hawaiian sounding chords. Especially when you slide the bar up from one chord to the next and get the sweeping glissandi.

  • Thanks a lot.

    I will try this.

  • Traditionally tunings have been given from the top string down, the top string being the first or thinnest.

  • This is the A6 tuning that you use, which is good for songs like Sand, Waikiki, How Dya Do, and Coconut Grove. But C6 (the one I mentioned earlier) is good for songs like Aloha Oe, Beyond the Reef, Harbor LIghts, Blue Hawaii, and many other songs. I think that C6 is better for general use, but if you playing the other songs, use A6.

  • Jerry's own special C6/A7 from the top down-

    E-C-A-G-E-C#-A

YES 7 strings... check out the other ones I posted there's comments about the 7string RESONATOR.

I think it's a "Sho-Bro" made specially for Jerry by Shot Jackson.

  • If I have a six string and wanted to play this, what do you think I should leave off, the A or the E?

  • Leave off the bottom string (A) it still is a very useful tuning.

Play all the strings at the third fret EXCEPT for the 6th and you have an Eb 6 chord, then go down two frets to the 1st fret and play all the strings EXCEPT the 2nd, and you have a Bb7, so, the tonic and the dominant seventh within two frets of each other.,

Play strings 1+2+4 at the third fret =Eb MAJOR, go up three frets (to the 6th) and play strings 2+3+5 = Eb MINOR. Want more? Google European Steel Guitar Forum.

  • Amazing!

Does anyone know the tuning on the Dobro?

  • très beau et un peu nostalgique

    j´aime beaucoup

  • Jerry Byrd!!!

  • Really enjoyed these old Marty Robbins and Jerry Byrd clips. Where did they come from a TV Show? 52 years ago I learned to play steel by listening to Jerry Byrd records. Then years later I went to Hawaii on my honeymoon, he was playing at the Royal Hawaiian. We caught his shows! What a treat! He played all my favorites and my wife and I danced all night! After not playing for 50 years, I am now going to get my old Rickenbacher 6 string out of the attic and brush up! Thanks. tom7nan

  • i wanna thank you and appreciate your trayin with this song its pure sound ..the chords you wrote was wonderfull i tried it and i felt more in the verses instead of A chord try A7 and try in the bridge or instead of the normal Em chord try the Em7 with variations it sounded more good thank you so much for the chords u added so helpfull

  • Thanks, I meant A7.

Yes, so use the A7 every place I listed the A.

I tried the Em7 in the bridge, seems to work pretty nice, Thanks for the tip.

  • Help me here!

This is a nice song. I'm trying to figure out the chords, so far I'm getting (D),A,D,D#dim,Em,A,D. This verse repeats, then the,

    Bridge:

    D7th,G,Gm,D,B7th,Em,A.

    Then back to the verse:

    A,D,D#dim,Em,A,D.

Marty's playing something other than the Em but it seems to work.

Come on guitar players etc. help me out here.

  • ELVIS did this one...ELVIS and MARTY FOREVER!!!!!!!

  • This song is among the most very beautiful pieces you can find on youtube.

Marty Robbins, the finest "western" singer ever, and Jerry Byrd, "the master of touch and tone" on steel guitar. It gets no better than this!

Friends, this is what music was meant to be.

  • I like the one who was responsible for accompaniments. He played really well.

  • Kallisann, that email address just wont accept my emails, I have checked and tried many times. They keep coming back from Mail Administrator?

  • donods. Thanks for trying. I don't understand why it won'twork. Oh well.

  • Kallisann..I have tried to email "Isle of Golden dreams" to you but it keeps coming back.I checked your address,is what you gave me correct??

  • donods. Kallisann can be reached at terridelaney1@yahoo,ca

  • He could sing Country,Blues,Pop,and Hawiian too. He also was a NASCAR driver. Very Talented!

  • TOPOFFMAN...I agree..I've still got my LP Columbia Records Cl-1349 of "Gunfighters Ballads and trail songs." Hard to choose, but "El Paso" and "Strawberry

    Roan" are way up there

  • Fantastic!

  • What great memories! Thank you so much for posting this. One of my best childhood memories was listening to Marty's "Songs of the Islands" My father loved his music so much and this song is one of my favorites. Marty was truly one of a kind.

  • marty was the most versatile singer of his era and still waiting for one of this era to top him. perhaps, when you consider everything, perhaps the greatest voice in music.

  • I do agree...but also, perhaps with not much stage presence..Roy Orbison had a phenomenal range and a beautiful voice..as in "Leah"

  • wow.

  • Ho dis one brings tears to my eyes.

  • If you like this one, you should hear Marty sing

"My Isle Of Golden Dreams" Help me find it.

    It's truly beautiful.

  • Kallisann,.... "Isle of Golden Dreams", is easy to get ,it`s on Marty`s, "Hawaii`s Calling Me "( Bear Family) album, available from "Barnes and Noble"...it has 28 Hawaiian songs, all with Jerry Byrd on steel...including my favorite "Wailana"(Drowsy Waters)...beautiful..

  • donods...thank you. I will definitly try to get the one you recomended. I've got "Songs of the Islands"

(Columbia records CL1087) Just was hoping I might find it somewhere on The Tube.

  • I think it is one of lifes great pleasures hearing Marty singing Hawaiian songs, but then it's a pleasure hearing him sing anything I guess.

  • Oh, man these guys are smooth! It's so great to hear Jerry play a little backup, along with his unbelievable soloing. Thanks again for putting this out there. Mahalo!

  • One of the few songs I know that get better the more I listen to it! Thank you!

  • Marty with The Master of Touch and Tone, Jerry Byrd. Very Nice. Thanks.

  • This song was also recorded by Elvis Presley on May 27, 1966. It's available on "Elvis Aron Presley" box and on "From Nashville to memphis-The essential 60's amsters,I" box. Thank you for this beautiful video!

  • Wow , great hands to get such a smooth tone from what is basically a resonator guitar ( Dobro) and back then dobro's were played with a rough edge.

  • Ahhhhh..."Beyond Relief" The Master !

  • Over here we call it "Beyond Belief", and it is.
