This wreck, and then the wreck at the glen 2 weeks ago with Reutimann, just proves how strong the cot is, and how lazy Nascar is with updating their tracks by removing these sharp-angled walls and putting in safer barriers
@wogolfer It's not up to NASCAR to update the tracks, it's the responsibility of the tracks owner(s). NASCAR can give them recommendations, but they can't force it upon them since they don't own the tracks.
I just made a note in my notepad: the designer of Pocono is sadistic. The turns suck, it's dangerous as hell, and it's just... in general... a tough track. My least favorite track on the NASCAR circuit.
@UNpilot15 the racing is good at pocono, but is still deadly, they only put safer barriars on the straight ways, that three car wreck in the arca sieries pocono 250 this year displayed perfectly how dangrouse the turns still are, three cars headed for the inside gaurd rail at over 170mph, hit the access road and go flying through the air with one landing in the infield, it's a good thing they did fly through the air instead of hit the wall, now they need safer barriers all around the track
@p1k4nurxp13sr They put the safer barries here you ass. It's all fixed now! It's like, people want no races at pocono because there aren't wrecks every 20 laps. Now you idiots want no races because of a wreck!!!
@p1k4nurxp13sr no, just one reason. mainly, this track is boring to watch, just like auto club, michigan, new hampshire, kansas, and so on. too hard to pass, no real racing going on. that's the problem with the 2 car draft at plate tracks as well, that nobody really tries to race. we want more racing at places like atlanta, darlington, road courses. Also, bring new tracks in to mix it up, seriously, the stands were empty at pocono on sunday. try nashville or something like that.
@Nascar93fan Well, if you look at the passenger's-side c-pillar of his car, you can see a lot of damage from external pressure. In other words, either something large landed above the right-rear tire, behind the right side window, or when the car hit, it rolled up and onto the wall. From the angle the car looks to have gone, I'd say it probably did at least roll up on the wall a little bit. Hard to say though with crappy camera angles. With all of that inertia, the energy had to go somewhere.
2010 really shed more light on the safety issues there. ambrose, kahne and sadler really proved how far pocono has lagged behind safety wise. nice to know they now have catch fences/safer barriers.
@jrfan07 I agree whole heartedly. I last went to Pocono in 2006 (Jeff Gordon's big turn 1 accident) and it's true. Pocono is an awesome facility. But the main catch fence that runs down the front straight when I last went there was all rusted out and just needed to be updated. Glad to see Pocono finally catching up with the safety improvements of other tracks in the past few years.
Just as an update for everyone, Pocono has installed a catchfence completely around the race track and the SAFER barrier is now in place on the inside of the racetrack from the exit of turn 1 to the entrance of turn 3
I suppose this is what NASCAR gets for racing at such a deathtrap of a race track. This crash pretty much proves that the COT is a tank and can withstand just about any sort of impact it takes, which is definitely good for Sadler because had this been about 5 years ago, that may have been his last ride.
@F1V1 Uhhh no. Not a "deathtrap of a racetrack". Pocono is a great track. Sure the inside guardrails like where Elliott hit need adjusting (and Pocono has since done all that to the inside guardrails), but every track has parts of the inside that jut out. Like Las Vegas and Jeff Gordon's 2008 crash where the was no wall there to begin with and hit the opening. I think ALL tracks need to work on making it so that theres no sudden angles and such where a driver can hit like that...
@F1V1 Pocono is safer than most of the other tracks. Five years ago nothing would have been different with Sadler if he'd crashed with the previous car.
@SlicedSmoke14 no I didn't have my camera with me. I should have though. ohh well someone else will have a good home video of it who was sitting in the infield
@88nascarracer yea, I did a reanactment of it and was at the same exact speed, and my position on the track after wrecking was exactly the same spot. and it did go on its side.
poor wall

damn, i hope a new video of the wreck never comes out, this video was all I needed to see.

If NASCAR never came up with the cars they have in the last 10 or so years, Elliott Sadler wouldve probably been killed!

Prior to having seen the replay of the crash, I thought Elliott flipped at first!!

It really doesn't show much but he got up on his side and nearly flipped completely. I was a t the race and saw the whole thing.
