@ankiystad hey i wish you could come to Australia to we are a plesent pepole and i like to think that we are nice pepole to but thats me hope you can come soon
I heard this song as was on my work experience at a school in my town, they are using it as part of their school play, i heard it, and i think i'm in love with it haha!! Proper music :D
I agree! I wanted to show it to the kids at our library program on Australia...but now I'm not going to since that picture was in there :( How totally unnecessary...
I read that an American music publisher got a copyright on this after the songwriter died, and that in 1996 at the Olympics the Australian government actually had to pay them for the right to play it. Is that true?!
I remember manning the rails steaming into Fremantal, they played this tune on IMC. I'll never forget it. I still donno what in hell he sang? Billy boiling your jumwut?
@ingramjd I spent a year in Australia in my early 20's and came across alot of interesting aussie slang. A billy is a kettle used over a fire, and a jumbuck, not a jumwut, is a sheep. Can't wait to go back again. Miss that place every time I think about it.
I would like to dedicate this song to our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and father-in-law, who passed away a few days ago. He loved Slim Dusty and his music all his life. Although he never recorded his own records, he sang country himself at many venues throughout his life. Back in the 1950s he was chosen by Slim Dusty to perform with him at many venues. My father-in-law meant everything to me...........
ProudAussie100 This song is Australian not Irish or Canadian.
Peace,
Slim Dusty sang it at the end of the Sydney Olympics.. Millions saw that! U would think that people would Google stuff afore saying strange things... Like "La Marseillaise" is a Saudi song!
Ive just bought a budgie and called her Matilda ,i was born in Australia and budgies our australian ,a great song which i had on record lovely video love Shirls xx

Me encanta, me encanta, que recuerdos de Australia, tengo un koala que cuando lo pulsa me canta esta canción. VIVA AUSTRALIA!!!! PD: los de orange se han copiado de la canción
Mates, this was the video that gave me my first taste of Slim Dusty... I've never heard of him until this... and what a song too! This is my favorite version with beautiful pictures... This song led me to other popular Slim Dusty songs Like Duncan, Pub With No Beer, and G'day, G'day. I then bought the album THE VERY BEST OF SLIM DUSTY, and now I have a whole collection and channel on YouTube devoted to Slim Dusty! I would just like to say thanks, after all these years!
It's a sad song if you read the meaning of the words. The Swagman (who's a traveling craftsman) put the Jumbuck (which means un-tame sheep that hasn't been sheered) in his tucker bag (food bag) and the Squatter (person who owns land illegally) came with the police to get the sheep back.
THE SHEEP DIDN'T BELONG TO ANYONE. IT WAS UNTAMED!!!
So the swagman committed suicide for the simple reason of being accused of stealing
I wonder what ever became of his billy? Did it ever boil? hmm..
on the other hand, anybody claiming unbranded livestock might be called squatter, the swagman took it ignoring whether the jumbuck -even animals need some taming haha- belonged to anyone, but tried to keep it as his only valuable belonging (forget about the billy: it must have been too hot to get before running away).
the swagman could have prefered his life alone for sure over the jumbuck and the risk of losing it all...but that risk was unbearable, and dammit he bore it too little
My Uncle, Aunt and cousins live in perth, my Grandparents used to visit about every 3 years or so, when I was about 2 or 3 they brought me back a teddy that sang this song. for years I thought it was "Whoa Sing Matilda!" haha
Did you know that Americans invented country music? They also invented God, Apple Pie, and DNA. Important one, that last one. Without DNA no one would be alive. God Bless America.
I love this song, in the UK , years, back when at primary school we had to sing this everyday in assembly ( just one of many songs -and hymns also). There was this very important person who use to come to sing this with us. He had something to do with this song .I was brought up loving this and singing it so it strikes a chord in the heart. I still remember standing in assembly singing this!!
I am a Swede living in Sweden and I've been to many countries around the world but NO COUNTRY have allowed me to fall so hard and deeply inlove as Australia. God, I love this country! <3 AUSSIES!
I tried to emigrate to Australia but I wasn't able to do so. Anyway, this is a grand version of Waltzing Matilda, such a different mood than some of the others. All of them good. I think this bloke has it right when he sings. "With that jolly jumback you're got in your tuckerbag" rather than "Where's that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag." If the squatter knows it's in swagmans' tuckerbag, why ask where it is? So, the other versions are a bit off here. Thanks mate!
