  • I,m sorry. I really hope I didn,t offend anyone. I come from an Italian heritage and occaionally get comments about Italys role in the war. I feel embarrased. But that,s just me. Mabe I embarass easily.Anyways, I hope we never have to experience first hand anything like that again!

  • steve mcqueen was great!!

  • It must be alittle embarrasing being German and watching hollywood WW2 movies. I know I would feel a bit uncomfortable. But, ya can someone PLEASE try to post this wonderful movie?

  • @isabellainnorway No, it isn't embarrassing being German or Austrian and watching Hollywood WW2 movies (well, it's "embarrassing" to watch any badly done Hollywood movie but that's another story ;-) ). I - and many/most others too - can't relate to the Nazis and hate them. I'm glad they lost the war! When I watch movies like this I don't identify with them and I almost started crying at some points (e.g. whem Bartlett and Macdonald were killed),

  • SOMEONE POST THE FULL MOVIE PLS!

  • One of the men that were killed by the gestapo after they escaped was born, and raised not far from where I live. Rest in peace the Honorable 50 allied prisoners of war that were murdered by the cowardly gestapo.

  • Freedom is what everyone needs to. The exchange with his life.

  • guter Film.zeitlos und gut gemacht.wunderbare schauspieler wie steve mcqueen, james garner etc.

  • My great uncle was a still photographer for this movie, the picture at 9:28 is one of his. I even have the cameras he used back then!

  • If ever a Hun and Slov square off...get the hell out of the way!

Man, that was a nasty grinder of attrition on the eastern front...and personal!

  • And yes, of course, those nasty tough sons-a-bitch Soviets flailed the German Wehrmacht from the summer of 1941 onwards...That tied down 2/3 of the Nazi war machine for the duration. Hell, if you were a Kraut facing complete annihilation (and enduring a 3 year case of the shits) on the eastern front, wouldn't you rather head west and surrender to the allies? It wasn't the chocolates and smokes that motivated them! The Russians had something for them...and weren't no damned candy!

  • It's such a shame he's not around, my mum remembers him but I was born way after his death. What have we got now...The Jonas Brother's and Justin 'makes me vomit' Beiber.pffff

  • Sure, it was Hollywood. But it was a lot of fun. I was 9 years old when it came out- and it inspired me to read the book. Later, in HS, I had a drama teacher who was a "kriegie" in STalag Luft III, but he was in the American camp and took no part in the escape.

  • roger bartlett got 50 people killed cause he never told them the ss would kill them in a other escape.....the arsehole

  • if ppl liked the movie alot like i did you should read the book! im reading it now theres alot more info its good

  • I LOVE!!! this era in Hollywood. The great GRANT movies. It was ALL ABOUT story!!!. This is a different kind of film than what is made today but the reason i like it so much is the directors trusted their actors.. TO ACT!!!. This is one of my favorite films to watch around Christmas time.. I don't know why.. Sit back and just let it take you away.

  • Check also Oflag II C Woldenberg ( Dobiegniew) on wikipedia. Very interesting stuff. Greeting from Gorzów WLKP. Poland

  • I will see the origanal movie, but I can't find it:(

  • no yanks in the camp so why in the film

  • @kevinkards1 it was a Hollywood film. they had to have americans so it would sell

  • This main tune was used in the trailer of Wall-E !

Speaking about the film, I love it! As far as I know, only 3 menaged to escape for good. The rest were recaptured and 50 of them were executed.

  • gotta love mcqueen's "2HUNDREDAND50!!!!?????"

  • America's entry into WW2 certainly hastened the war. The Soviets can be thanked for the greatest sacrifice during WW2. They suffered the greatest loses and killed more Germans by far.

  • By June 1941, the ill-fated Eastern front was consuming vital resources and thus ended any chance of invading England and it sealed Germany's fate. By Sept 1940, Germany had FAILED to invade England and the slender opportunity had passed. No doubt Britain's position would have been extremely weak if not for the massive loan given by the US as part of Lend Lease.

  • I really like the film and appreciate that several real life characters need to be combined into one in the film. What sort of spoils it is the background. All the time after the escape we see Alpine scenery when in fact the region around Sagen is pretty flat.

  • Thanks very much for posting. Great stuff.

  • 6211: You're from the United Kingdom. Should be glad that the Americans saved your ass!

  • @jrwel14 Greetings from Canada! Sorry man, there were no Americans involved in the Great Escape...that's just Hollywood rewriting history to sell out tickets at the box office. Americans saved our asses? You should be reminded that the Americans were the last ones to get there and the first ones to leave in both World Wars. They got shot up by the Germans in 1917 in WWI and they didn't enter WWII (reluctantly) until the Japs bombed Pearl Harbour in 1943. WWII started in 1939 my friend.

  • @MegaTmarshall Never meant to say that there were Americans in the Great Escape. My point about "Saved Your asses." was meant for someone from the United Kingdom. Britain was in Dire straits at the time. Churchill even destroyed part of the French fleet. To prove to FDR that he was worthy of more war supplies. Good to see someone from Canada.

  • @jrwel14 American contributions during both World Wars was greatly appreciated by the Allied Forces. Make no mistake about that. Churchill destroyed part of the French Fleet because some of those French bastards could not be trusted. My dad (a WWII veteran of the Canadian Navy) told me of how a certain large French submarine was destroyed by our fleet because of "suspicious naval activity" that caused the loss of important shipping. The French sub was quietly removed. Brothers in Arms!

  • @jrwel14 Churchill also didn't want those vichy bloodsucking bastards in the French navy to hand the fleet over to Germany. Remember, they (French navy) put up a fight during Operation Torch...got their shit kicked in by the American task force covering the various landings! During and after Operation Torch, any slight twitch from a French ship......well, down she went!

  • @jrwel14 The RAF thwarted Hitler's plans to invade, YOU FUCKING RETARDED CUNT

  • @erroneousapostrophe Saw that you are a troll And an Englishman living in the states! England wasn't good for you? I bet the real answer is that they threw you out.

  • @jrwel14 I have lived in several countries and I currently reside in the States. It is part of a wide experience of life that I enjoy and not influenced by anything other than my own desire.

  • @jrwel14 Operation Sea Lion was thwarted by the gallant efforts of the RAF. From June 1940 to August 1940 the RAF prevailed with attrition rates reaching 4:1 at times. By September 1940 the Germans had postponed their invasion attempt indefinitely. Goering pleaded with Hitler for more time but the loses were far too great for the Luftwaffe to sustain.

  • @erroneousapostrophe On your channel, you also say that you are a troll. Reminds me of the little dolls of the 60s with the big ears and the long hair. So that's you?

  • @jrwel14

Credit where credit is due.......had the Brits not opened a can of whoop-ass during Operation Sea-lion (Battle of Britian), the allies would not have had a base for the future liberation of Europe. Never forget, the commonwealth forces, along with the forces from all the European and Asian nations in exile, held the line for the first 3 years of the war...Europe, Asia, North Africa, Persia, the Pacific and Atlantic....North and South poles too!

  • @jrwel14 This should explain why there where only a handfull of American POW's in the Stalag...Until around mid 1943, a reality!

  • On what year was the camp in real?

  • The French still surrendered

  • my father escaped twice from a pow camp the ist time he got as far as carlile

  • Steve McQueen gets the spot light in this film but do look at James Garner in this one too. This is his best film.

  • One of the best films ever made!!! If you have not seen this movie, well, you just don't love movies.

  • john sturges is one of the best hollywood film director during the 50's and 60's..I salute him..

  • Hey, war aint easy for anyone, on any side. Let's not forget about lend-lease to the Soviets, and Hitlers culpability due to his stategic and tactical stupidity on all fronts, throughout the duration of the conflict. I have nothing but admiration and respect for the tenacity of the Russian Soldiers that managed to overcome and kick the crap out of the Nazi machine.

American private industry won that war.

  • Hey, keep downing on America dude....If it wasn't for our greatest generation that faught in WW2, you wouldn't be alive here today bitchin about it.......Your grand parents would have been made into lamp shades, and hand soap, complements of the 3rd Reich.........PUNK!

  • @RW4X4X3006 : Let me remind you that the greatest losses and defeats by the Germans were suffered by them on the eastern front. It is the Soviets who inflicted the greatest casualties on the Germans. The allies on the western front had an easier time against the Germans. The Germans preferred to be taken prisoner in the west rather than by the Soviets. The Soviets were brutal in their treatment whereas the Americans offered American cigarettes and chocolates to German POW's.

  • I can't watch this film after reading the book - the number of American characters invented and added in to please Hollywood sticks in the craw

  • It was only 3 characters and the veterans who were actaully there said that the film was very accurate even with the American characters who were based off really people! Plus the Americans were involved, they just got sent away before the tunnel was finished, watch the rest of the making of!

  • america lies about every single war they have entered and every war they are bound to start, they polute history, this is a fine example

  • @6211safe When you learn how to spell pollute and you back up your nonsensical statements with documented facts, only then will I deem you to have improved yourself to having half a brain.

  • @6211safe;

Im typing slow so you will understand.

    This is a m..o..v..i..e.

    Its not r..e..a..l, its m..a..k..eb..e..l..i..e..v..e.

Look at me -- Im trying to communicate intelligently to a guy who has WRESTLEMANIA videos on his channel!

Wait! You think professional wrestling is real!!!!

  • @6211safe "america lies about every single war they have entered" you say . Sure, and every other country and empire is of course entirely honest about their own record in history and wars, every one.

  • @6211safe Perfect example of someone who hates the truth!. Who can't accept what happened to the 50 killed by the SS! No one can change the truth. It's the nazis that lie. Look at the Nazi newsreel where they said they defeated the Allies at Normandy! The 50 executed was not an isolated case. Look up Oradour-Sur-Glane, Putten, Lidice. At Distomo the waffen SS bayoneted the babies in their cribs.

  • The greatest film ever made.

  • Americans are so full o shit...... good film it may be, but full o hollywood shit......... look it up, as there wasn't one American in that camp, not one, whereas hollywood and america yet again make out they are the heroes.......... bullshit!

  • there were Americans in the camp and they took part in the construction of the tunnels but they were moved before the escape attempt.

  • @caddymart : American POW"s were there but did not take part in the escape. There were ally Pow's from many countries. For example, the 50 POW victims(escapees) who were murdered by the Germans were the following: 21 Brits, 6 Poles, 6 Canadians, 5 Australians, 3 South Africans, 2 Norwegians, 2 New Zealanders, 1 Lithuanian, 1 Czech, 1 Greek, 1Frenchman and 1 Belgian.

  • @caddymart; Absolutely! It should have been much more realistic like Chinatown or Robin Hood. Oh, no, wait, I get it. You mean more realistic like those blockbusters Winged Migration or Harlan County USA.

Americans are not full of shit. You are full of shit. America is full of heroes.

  • jesus i didn't know The Great Escape was made in 1963. I was born in 1994 and I love this movie and The Dirty Dozen.

  • well he did a good job i rekon =D . . i hate the nazis :@!

  • who dont :D

  • @TheXVigilanteX This was not a death camp - it was a POW camp - completely different things.

  • Hollywood needs to stay out of making historical films !!!

  • Thank You for posting this. I saw this movie in 1963 when I was just a young girl, and I remember fearing that my father could end up in this situation since he was in the military. This was one of my father's favorite movies, and it is interesting to learn about the background and history behind the movie. We lived in Germany when my dad was stationed there, and my mother discovered that we had family relatives there. So there were soldiers fighting each other from the same country.

  • Love the History Channel.

  • Thanks for this! My favorite all time movie and certainly the best WWII movie ever made. Where is part 2?

  • Thanks a lot for uploading! The Great Scape is one of my favourites movies!

  • Burt Reynolds' narration sucks.

  • Were they really going to try and film this in the US and not in Europe?

  • Hello my name Marcin end the stalag and my city Zagan.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Thanks! I can't find Part 2. I'd love to see it!
