  • Now let's see you blow out a ship

  • @leatherfacefan1974 i get it lol i actually watched it this morning

  • This is a helpful video, thanks.

  • what clay should i use to make my own that u dont have to cook

  • Clay pipes gradually poison your lips over time.

  • clay is great

  • i make bongs at my school :)

  • @MrCuMMINSPULLER u r a fukin retarded 13 yr old

  • I am an historical 18th century re-enactor. The only pipe I smoke out of are clay. There is a great site Jas-townsend that markets to us, they do not sell tobbacco for obvious reasons, but they offer a ton of different kinds and styles of clay pipes. Enjoy

  • @ BoldODonahue is very difficult to find a pipe like those in Brazil, started smoking a pipe at 18, now I have 22 and still have not found a churchwarden = /

My dream is to have a churchwarden or a Pipe Clay like yours = /

I am a huge fan of your videos and you have great churchwardens xD

    cheers from brazil dude

  • @havielfelixbrito Thanks man, I appreciate you watching my videos! I don't know where to get these clay churchwardens anymore since Fox River Traders closed down. You can get a really nice 6" clay from Seven Shot Trading Post. Take care!

  • @BoldODonahue pipesandcigars has a very nice clay warden. Picked one up recently. One of my favorite smokes.

  • @havielfelixbrito I see them on ebay all the time for anywhere from $5-$15, check it out. Good luck and god bless!

  • Nice smoking! I love pipes but I'm kind of too young to smoke so I smoke my pipe rarely - I bought first one since I read Moomins and Hobbit.

By the way, I've just noticed that you're just 27! With this beard I thought you're at least 35.

  • hotty

  • Ilove the way that pipe looks...ok Ill give them a try...where do you get the clap pipes from...I like that pipe.....all though Im a cob smoker at heart...

    Cheers

    Bob

You know you can set a cob out in the sun and it does the sam ething you were talking about with the clay pipe and oven

  • I Believe This is a great Pipe Smoker :))

  • let me guess........ur 24?

  • floggin molly in the background, and that is a beautiful pipe !!! gona make one tomorrrow :)

  • I am in Washington State and can't find them around here any more. In the early 90's I was in the Frontier Soldiers Association (since disbanded) and used to know where to find the clays. But it's been a while and I no longer can get them. Anyway I have subed to your chanell upon seeing this vid.. My channel is The Eltopian though I have put up no vids yet, but VERY soon I shall. I'm pleased to meet you. Take Care. Dale, aka The Eltopian.

  • Do you recommend a long churchwarden style clay pipe, or one of the short clay pipes and why?

  • Their website now says, Fox River Traders -

"After 17 years, we have decided to close our doors and enjoy our free time. We thank you for your patronage."

  • I have one of those pipes

  • There were multiple videos on this topic and I chose yours because of your epic beard

  • Legendary beard. Very impressive long pipe as well.

Keep on puffin good sir :)

  • Why don't they make glass pipes? wouldn't that give the most "pure" smoke out of any other material.

  • how would cannabis be in one?

  • You can wash them in the sink with deturgent like a cup for a freshen up especially if you have lent it to some body else and they dry fine,,this is good as a between fire cleaning fresh up.

Once you have fire cleaned it the paint on the tip is burn't off,,,i don't know what non toxic paint to use but bees wax rubbed on the tip will stop your lip sticking to it and keeps the end from becoming too stained and tasting bitter.

  • Falcon pipe cleaners which are narrow fit the airflow of the stem and you will find clays are not dirty pipes,,they are high performance when you consider all the routine that surrounds the pipe smoking experience.

I have one 12 inch clay churchwarden that give a cool smoke,,but i had to open the airflow up a bit with a peice of fuse wire because the stem had some clay blockage like a flash of slip up the stem near the bowl. They are really light in the mouth as well for hands free working.

  • Flake is ok in them as well,i cannot say what an aromatic would be like because i have never tried it;i wouldn't smoke aromatic in it due to the excess moisture,,for aromatics i have some petersons with the moisture trap system,,,i think aromatics need a bigger bowl..

The recovery time of clays between smokes is quick,,and due to the thinness of the clay they are drying as you smoke because the moisture is realeased though the material(clay) as you smoke.

  • The consistancy varies because they aree hand made;in this it is notice that the air flows in the stems vary due to different shrinkage rates of the clay during firing process,,,this is good because by accident of design you will find that one clay will suit the burn rate of a particualr tobacco better than another,so you can fine tune your smoking to taste..They don't go like a meershaum colour;they turn grey and black near the top of the bowl,my dirty oily work hands deos the most coloring.

  • I have ordered some meerschaum lined bowls for my falcon which i hope have better high temp endurance..The wood bowl is still perfectly smokable but i was disapointed that briar couldn't take my pace,i do take my time sometimes.

I will order another 6 of my favourite clay because wilsons who made them went out of business once,,clays are a rare industry and i had to search a lot for spares.Wilsons and sharrow of sheffield england make the best, they took on pollacks of manchester as well.

  • They are low maintenace and don't stink like an old shoe, they are forgiving of any smoking speed because they are high temperature proof ceramic.

I only bought a falcon pipe recently because i wanted a sure pipe that has more durabilty for smoking on the move like travelling. The falcon pipe has practically the same bowl size and airflow,,the only problem is that the moisture resevoir steals from the briar its fire retardant property near the bottom..That is my fault for treating it like a clay.

  • My favourite work or home pipe is clays it fits in my mouth like biting a pencil.

I prefer the bowl size and the airflow is just right for my taste of plugs, twist, ropes and english/balkans..Rather than smoke a large pie i load up 3 of these and smoke one afer the other...The benefits of having many because they are so cheap is because you can buy a disposable barbecue from the petrol station and clean a lot of them at the same time,,having many the same is better than one and they all equal one

  • The shorter the clay the more robust it is;that being said they are not too fragile,,i have dropped them and they do survive sometime, other times i have dropped it from a small height and the stem has snapped but they superglue together fine and are stronger on that point therafter. clays often have small hairline fissures in them from birtth. You can even smoke the tar which burns on the ash like a wick.

  • I smoke clays constantly;the 6 inch georgian is my best pipe,,i have six which i use in rotation, they taste pure and burn hot without suffering so your baccy never extinguishes..I have briars but prefer these ,the mouth bit fits in my teeth grip better than a fishtail.I have have burned out my recent falcon pipe bowl and thought i was smoking latakia! The clays are so forgiving towards any moisture level in the tobacco that you don't need to fuff about with pre drying and stuff.

  • I've got a much shorter one, only smoked a few bowls but I do enjoy it, I suppose it's the European version of the corn cob.

I got mine from the local tobacconist!

  • Heather Coleman's clays of Dawnmist studios are well worth the transatlantic shipping and fairly inexpensive even with postage. Some of her pieces are quite accurate reproductions of 16th, 17th and 18th century pieces and the few in my collection smoke very well.

  • Comment removed

  • 6" georgian clay pipe is my favourite pipe;i have 6 of these which i use for english or non aromatics;they burn hotter and the ash goes pure white with no dottle..

I have briars for aromatics but the 6" clay georgian is just right;not too hot or cold, right amount of smoke flow;wilsons of sheffield england..they are a great standard if you are more intersted in tobacco than pipe aesthetics..

  • where did you get your's? or could you recomend

  • I wonder how you look without your beard!

I'm sure it will be a huge difference.

Do you ever concider about shaving it off?

  • @rotolog91 Nah, I've got a baby face. I started growing my beard at age 19 and ever since people have treated me with more respect and like an adult. Facial hair demands respect :-D

  • @BoldODonahue I started growing my beard at around 19 as well; I can remember at the time people asked me while I didn't shave, while others said "Wicked beard!" Now I like my beard lots; incidentally, some said I've got a pipe-smoker's beard while others say it's a professor's beard or a Viking beard. Sometimes I fancy myself as a Viking myself!

  • @BoldODonahue 100% AGREED! I would trade my testicals to be able to have a great beard.

  • @BoldODonahue

    Indeed it does !

  • @BoldODonahue I was growing my beard until someone on the bus made fun of it so I had to have it trimmed. Still got a little one!

  • Where do I find one of these?

  • @MrLeathermantool you can get short 7" ones at Seven Shot Trading Post which are GREAT quality and shape. A simple search for clay church warden pipes in google should pull up some sites. I bought mine for like $7 from Fox River Traders but they closed down unfortunately. I can't find any like the ones I have now. They were great and cheap. I see some ones for about $30 which is incredibly expensive for a clay. I'll just stick with the short ones from Seven Shot Trading Post.

  • @MrLeathermantool Google 'Dawnmist' for a lady called Heather Coleman in Exeter, England, who makes excellent reproductions of historical clay pipe types, including long-stemmed churchwardens and tavern-pipes.

  • do you filter or put a screen in a clay pipe? or is it constructed to not get ash in the mouth

  • @FTWbiology It's constructed much like a modern briar ... there's no screen or filter just a hold that hits the bottom side of the pipe.

  • @BoldODonahue I just got 3 clays today in the mail. one 4" Elizabethan, one 7" Goudan (sp?) dutch style. and an 8" colonial style. I really like them. I have only smoked the two larger ones. and they smoke great. And like you said the way they are made they never have any ash or anything going into the mouth, it's fantastic. Clays are my favorite :D

  • I get all my clay pipes from myself.

  • do I hear the makem and spain brothers in the back ground?

  • do you know what kind of clay is used to make it? Because I actually thought of making a clay pipe, it would be fun

  • smokin,

  • They turn black from smoking a great deal and that like a very colored meerschaum is so rare and especially a black clay! Jason

  • What you said about cleaning a clay in a fire place was all true-I was just trying to make a point about how rare it is to smoke a clay long enough to turn it black and that Sherlock Holmes favorite pipes in the books turn's out to be a black clay and a cherrywood pipe. Good smoking to you! Jason

  • Hi O'-I once brought a long clay back from Virginia from a co. that has made them since the civil war. As you probably know in the books about Sherlock Holmes he never smoked a Calabash meerschaum-that was started by an actor on stage. His favorite pipes in the books were a cherrywood and a black clay--getting them black mellow's them a bit and I have never smoked one long enough to get it black but I would not try to whiten it up since that's like taking the color out of a meerschaum. Jason

  • @JJJUSCFAN8 I don't know much about black clay - I've got a clay that has turned a fair amount of brown. I only mention cleaning the pipe with oven or flames if the pipe gets too mucked up with too many flavors of tobacco. I used some of my clays strictly for trying new tobacco.

  • @JJJUSCFAN8 were his clays painted black or do they turn black from smoking them a lot?

  • I love the clay. I got mine off of Ebay from someone in Canada, Though the pipes are stamped as being from Germany. It took me a while to learn how to use them, and appreciate them. Now they are among my favorite smokers. I agree, great for tasting the tobacco. Great for finding that good not 30 minute smoke, as I don't always have the full hour to give to a bowl.

  • Awesome! Thanks for the always awesome advice and info! I'll see where this gets me...

  • I just bought a clay tavern pipe (much like the one in this video). But, I can’t keep it lit. I know that pipes must be relit occasionally during a session, but it doesn’t seem that I’m lighting/packing it correctly to begin with.

Do you have any suggestion on packing a clay pipe? (Lightly, or do you heavily tamp it?) What's the best lighter? How long can you wait between draws?

I would love any advice you have to offer! Thanks for the videos, they're very informative!

  • @lauraluvsbacon I found I have to pack the clays a little lighter then my briar's. It's hit or miss when it comes to how a new clay pipe will draw. I've ordered four churchwardens and each one had a slightly different draw and I prefer one over the others. Same goes for my two small clays - one is very good while the other's draw is very restrictive and goes out constantly. You never want to tamp heavily - just light to moderately tamp it - the ashes will go down if they're ready.

  • @lauraluvsbacon Also, I recommend getting a pipe lighter where the flame comes out at an angle as it's much easier to light a pipe properly. However, they aren't necessary as i get along ok with my zippo and sometimes matches. I have a few cheapy plastic lighters I use for backups. Hard to calculate how much time to take in between draws. It's something you have to discover for yourself. It varies widely depending upon how well lit you got it, the environment and what kind of tobacco.

  • how long does your clay pipe last?

  • @oldpulteney12 the clay pipe will last forever as long as you don't break it. Once it gets extremely colored one needs to bake it in the oven or put it in the coals of a fire to cleanse out the pipe. Then it will be as good as new!

  • @BoldODonahue thanks

  • How do you clear out the spittle during smoking!

  • @goinghomesomeday1 the clay pipe doesn't collect spittle, it absorbs it :)

  • @chrisisagoodname2

statistically pipe smokers live longer than non smokers

  • @Issun666 if your smoking weed that is true

    tobacco kills 400,000 people annually.

thats more than almost every drug combined

  • @chrisisagoodname2 tobacco as in cigarettes or abuse of any other forms can kill you. Pipe smokers, as issun666 mentioned, on average live longer then non-smokers. All things in moderation.

  • u look like shay carl

  • @magicdevil97 maybe a little bit lol ...

  • What's it like to smoke and do you recommend any tobacco?

  • @Hafdanviking37057 It's wonderful to smoke and I recommend virginia and cavendish blends.

  • @BoldODonahue Thanks!

  • @BoldODonahue That sounds like what an English Civil War re-enactor would smoke in a clay pipe.

  • That's one cool pipe!

  • Ireland Forever! I love the music. I just bought a Peterson pipe for St. Patrick's Day. I knew from your screen name that I would much like your videos.

Clay pipes are grand. Happy smoking sir.

    Seth

  • I'm a very loyal fan of Peterson. They make some great pipes! Always welcome a fellow irishman and I'm glad we share the same love for the beloved irish music.

    Happy Smoking to you, Seth!

    Sláinte Mhaith,

    Nic

  • Hey, I have a question for you. I've read people who say that they enjoy very much inhaling the smoke from a pipe where as others have said to not do it under any circumstances. My question to you is, 1. Have you yourself personally tried it? If so how was it? and 2. The health issues aren't of my concern but what is is if inhaling the smoke is immediately harsh (Hot, hard to keep from coughing). I plan on getting a cherry flavor so the pungent taste wont be an issue.

  • Personally I do not inhale as it increases the health risks and cancels out the health benefits from pipe smoking. Also, the times I've accidentally inhaled I have coughed to the point of tears. It is not pleasant at all to inhale pipe smoke as it's very harsh. I do enjoy taking in the smoke and blowing out my nose occassionally but inhaling into my lungs is never an option.

  • Saint Patrick's Day is also one of my favorite days and will be well celebrated. I'm irish thru and thru :)

  • @BoldODonahue Don't turn your back on your Sicilian heritage, son, small though it might be.

  • Sounds lik we have a some Irish tunes going on.

Its getting close March 17 my favorite day.
