  • $185 at the Chicago Theater, gift from Mike, what a great one, I'll never forget this show,.

  • prob one of my fav songs be steely dan

  • RainingColors

  • hmmmm brings back memories....had to drive in a blizzard from reno to petaluma california...going over donner pass with snow pouring down, i turned up my best of Steely Dan cassette tape to drown out the sounds and the fear; my husband was riding a new motorcycle in front of me. made it home ok :)

  • Bad sneakers. Good song.

  • I love Beckers Sadowsky.

  • If my head exploded, Steely Dan lyrics would fly out!

  • As they used to say on some hip radio station: Take the needle outta your arms kidz and put it on the record player / stereo.....(remember record players?)

Steely bridged the gap between jazz, rock, pop and "strictly commercial" as "uncle meat " Frank Zappa used to say. The very best of all the worlds and they had musical genius, talent, integrity and innovation out the ass. As they still do to this day! @@@ Bow your heads and All Hail Mr Becker and Mr Fagen....

  • 4 Dislikes??? WTF? Put the crackpipe down kidz...

  • @scottberk55 rofl

  • Becker's souless solo on this just sucks ass.

  • i personally enjoy this song, Dirty Work, and Reelin' in the Years. meh, they're all great

  • to all Steely Dan fans. he is playing at the Beacon Theatre in New York on September 23rd.

  • Good song, good times, good memories, great band.

  • Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but the haters are going to be very hot when they die, lol

  • Donald Fagen is genius! There are no words really, just that today's music doesn't even come close. Fagen and Becker...Yeah!

  • Love the guitar solo, even though not overdriven like the recorded version! Anybody know what kind of guitar Becker is playing? Sounds beautiful.

  • @jakollee Think it might be a John Suhr.

  • @jakollee He is playing his signature Sadowsky model guitar.

  • @NYsportsman Thanks! Problem is, now I want one!

  • Even though Michael McDonald(3rd member of SD) is not in the mix here, it is a great live version.

  • The late and great, Cornie Bumpass on Sax, looks like.

  • 3!!!!!!!!!! 3 dislikes!!!!!!!!!! i have to track those people down and unleash a roundhouse kick on them!!! LONG LIVE DAN!!!

  • @DawnProwl don't have to man,, they dislike steely, they already dead

  • Reminds me I am home.

  • Growing up in LA I always thought the references to "Magnolia Blvd" and "That ditch out in the Valley that their digging just for me" were references to the San Fernando Valley. No?

  • @2waterfall It's Fagen bitchin about being in LA (back in the 70's) and getting homesick for NYC.

  • Michael McDonald does the backing vocals on the original studio recording. Outstanding. He's not here, but this is pretty darn good, too!

  • Whats really amazing is how one band can produce so many hit songs! Richard

  • So happy to see Mr. Fagen got over his stage fright. What a treat!!

  • Dreaming away .... wonderful..

    Raphaela

  • Dreaming away .... wonderful..

  • Michael McDonald did the backup singing on the original recording. That is why it one of their finest!

  • i love the lead singers voie it's so original

  • I love Donald Fagan....he's a geek just like me! He can sing his heart out with those crazy lyrics. This is a piece of art through and through...timeless.

  • my dad turned me on to steely dan over 30 years ago every time i hear them reminds of him great great music.

  • Goin to see you guys again in philly on sept 9th!!!! Cant wait!!!!

  • Welcome back to Philly guys Sept 9-10 cant wait

  • I remember a Sunday afternoon circa 1981 , when a couple of friends and I realized that between us , we had everything Steely Dan ever recorded . So , we got a twelve-pack and some cheap "herbal refreshment" , and had a Steely Dan party. We started with track one , side one of their first album and played them in chronological order up to the final track on the B side of the last one. I think that was Aja , at that time. One hell of a way to spend an afternoon. Still makes me smile.

  • @LJH70122 you could have invited me

  • @LJH70122 That is so cool. Steely Dan are head and shoulders above any other band of their time musically. Their chord progression, etc., just way out ahead of anyone else.

  • @LJH70122 I would say that was a wonderful afternoon...the kind of day that sits in the heart and mind and allows you to realize there is goodness in life. Celebrate...celebrate!!

  • @LJH70122

i would've loved to be there if i was alive then XD

  • @LJH70122 yes I was your next door neighbour at the time. As you know we're Jewish and were having a circumcision party as you played the Dan all day. Sadly, I didn't have any anaesthetic at the time and my butcher's knife was blunt. I want to thank you for playing the Dan as all the boys and girls screaming in agony really appreciated the music. I'm so proud to be Jewish and circumcised to the music of the Dan.

  • look at the smile on the bassist's face-brilliant :)

  • PURE GENIUS!!!!! A CLASS ALL ALONE! THE 2 GREATEST AMERICAN SONGWRITERS!

  • great vocal, for some one who didnt like his own voice

    timeless

  • @reeceyburt Who does though, to be honest?

  • Pure ear candy! Steely Dan is one of my all-time favorite bands. Great live recording!

  • two words for this band.....BAD ASS!!!dig da Dan!

  • Made my day and my 'legendary live' playlist (one of my speed-dial playlists, when I need a live fix). Thank you!

  • I agree about the solo. I stopped the music and went straight back to it to hear it again emmediatly. Wow, so beautiful. He's had years to hone and refine his solos on these songs but still. Blew me away!!

  • The Dan ------------and then was the Dan

  • Great song. Not the usual attempt at a "commercially viable" song - no, never that from the Dan. Just render it straight from the heart.

  • I also love how all the session musicians are enjoying it so much

  • Always love the backup vocals. Add such a dynamic and added class to already superior songs and musicianship.

  • What a groove.

  • My favorite becker solo too, goosebumps every time it's so gorgeous and perfect! in EVERY way.....

  • that constant high frequency pitch is very annoying

  • @EYEdROP0 Eventually you'll get past it... you could say get someone else in to sing lead vocals..... but ........ it just wouldn't be Steely Dan without Fagen's singing.

  • @HarmPoy I was talking about the recording quality itself. There is a high frequency ringing in the tape that ruins the music for me. There are several steely dan videos like this. Mabey I can hear it because Im young...

  • @EYEdROP0 Hmmm, maybe - interesting though, you aren't the only young person who listens to Steely Dan though =p.

  • When I was a kid I didn't really care about Steely Dan but now ,I love them .Their music is so catchy and soothing . I love it !

  • when does a person know that they be the leader of a band ?

did he just wake up and say lets go?

  • I saw them touring in Denmark, Copenhagen - with Keith Carlock on drums, one of the best experiences I've ever had!

  • One of the greatest guitar solos from any song anywhere ~~

  • This incarnation of the dan is uncouth- how do you get info on when these videos were made, & who was playing all the instruments. was it same guys as in studio versions? so many questions, so little time (and knowledge).

  • WOW!!!

I haven't heard this tune in yeras!!!

I am amazed that I found it om YOUTUBE...but then, I guess everything is on here somewhere..LOL

  • Get it Walter --as always

  • Does he say 'fearscome excavation'?

  • The bass player always has a huge grin on his face! Probably because he knows the tunes he's playing are so awesome.

  • @alfaBAT9 Indeed. He knows he doesn't get to play good jams except when he gets with groups like Steely dan.

  • this whole cd katy lied never got it' just due. there are some great steely dan songs on it like " daddy don't live in that new york city no more", this song doctor wu.excellent music go buy it!

  • A friend of mine who was a Dan fan, thought this record was crap and returned it.. I love the energy in it.. Seems like they got tired after this or something.. Becker is on fire.. That guitar sound is unbelievable..

  • it is nice to watch and enjoy real talent and ability and the enjoyment they derive from their efforts

  • I might be the only brotha that loves Steely Dan in my hood.

His arrangements are bananas (that's slang for very, very good) LOL!

  • @MrTrueBlend your really not the only brotha that really gets the Dan ---going in sane

  • Smooth and Mellow , like Velveeta. Is it me but does Donald Fagan look an awful lot like Dr. Strangelove?

  • @MunchyMcNipples He does.... wow

  • The Two Gents who gave us such memories , melodies, thought provoking bloody chords, have endowed our mere mortal souls.. with Beautiful Music, couldn't say more. Love Steely Dan.

  • Bad Sneakers and a Pina Colada my friend.

  • Yeah Skunk Baxter is a MASSIVE disappointment as a human being. Whats worse is the notion he took Guitar synth technology to the murdering folks at the DOD.

Up yours Jeff! Doobie it up with the Generals, Hell is warm every time of year.

  • These guys etched out alot of my youth!!! Never Be another group like this, EVER!!!

  • @TheMustangsally75 Good comment! Steely Dan "etched out"

a lot of my mindbending experiences.

  • headed to the pool, cooler stocked, got my cheesy sun glasses...on this is perfect

  • Awesome Band

  • BEAUTIFUL SOLO BY BECKER HERE. Absolutely wonderful scales he's playing there. Really gives this song a new authority.

  • my dad introduced me to these guy's. i felt enlightened when i first heard this song.

  • Hey Bapyou, thanks for the update on Skunk!! I had thought he died as nothing from him is forthcoming lately. Goes to show, when you don't tow the Hollywood Bed wetting liberal agenda work becomes hard to come by.

  • One of the greatest bands and bunch of musicians of all time. Thank you for posting.

  • awesome tune......then again all steely dan songs are!!!!

  • also i would do unspeakable things to that black back-up singer

    see sexy so HARD

  • one of the best ever - to see it live, even adds to what you already knew about this song, if that were possible

  • this live take, is better than the recording imo. the backup vocals and horns are sublime

  • the solo is great !!!! hmmmmmmmmm

  • Bad sneakers and a pina col...??? WTF??? Sounds like a bum trip. Cuevo Gold and some fine Columbian. Now that's stylin'. These guys are far out! Just trippin'... Party On Brethren!!!

  • DITTO!!

  • music from the 70's,the best ever!

  • Great song but I prefer Rick Derringer's solo on the original.

  • Comment removed

  • Walter Becker performed the original solo on Katy Lied. FYI.

  • hands down my favorite S.D. song ever. not my favorite rendition though

  • How do they get so close to the record?

  • They play off charts probably off the original music written.

  • BAAAAAAAD SNEAKERS!

  • das ist noch handgemachte musik von erster güte! zeitlos gut!!

  • Such a cool song as most Dan is. Always nice to hear this happy tune!

  • If there is heaven on earth, playing these guitar licks must be it with tremendous vocals to match. Thanks to You Tube this band will live on forever.

  • Their guitar solos have a jazzy feel to it. I love this band. Their music sounds perfect with no blemish whatsoever. The vocals are also incredible.

  • This is one of my favorite Steely Dan tunes. It feels like you are walking in the City in the summer taking in all the sounds and sights of Manhattan. I truly love this band of musicians. Becker/Fagen are songwriting geniuses.

  • @sportschick1719 thats exactly what it reminds me of--good observation

  • @sportschick1719 thats funny because its a song about the san fernando valley in california

  • @txace2009 There is a Radio City in the San Fernando Valley?

  • @sportschick1719 exactly; the song is one their happiest ones; uplifting

  • Top 10 of all time band.

  • i love their style of songwriting. its very unique. also their choice of guitarists is always on the money, like larry carlton and skunk baxter . very cool i must say.

  • @goallnight Too bad Skunk Baxter turned out to be a right-wing toad. I heard him on the radio a few years ago talking about how pro-military & pro-CIA he was.

"That right-wing hooey sure stunk up the place!"

  • @bapyou bringn d lollz!

  • @bapyou Keep your political crap to yourself, Damn good guitar player and keeping you safe all at once, what a guy.

  • @bigwave1021 "Keep your political crap to yourself" Tell it to Skunk.

"Keep your political crap to yourself"

Save me from the people who would save me from myself, they got muscles for brains. Fuck off, wog.

  • Outstanding clip!

  • beautiful solo

  • The only thing this performance lacks is the backing vocals of Michael McDonald.

  • and the vibraphone used in the end of the album version

  • I get the feeling that the really cool guy is Fagen and that Becker is a dick head. I don't have anything to back that up other than just watching his behavior in their interviews. I get the feeling his jealous that Fagen gets all the attention and he's just a wing man, and not much of one at that.

  • Well, thats true. Becker IS half the band, and does deserve the attention and respect he doesnt get. I would be pissed too. Reminds me of John Paul Jones of Zeppelin. He had a HUGE influence in the music they composed, but people wouldnt recognize him if he passed them on the street.

  • Ha, good point. I wouldn't recognize JPJ on the street either. Hahaha Excellent point.

  • one could argue that that is a good thing. i mean, you ask any famous person how they have taken to fame, most of them will tell you they hate it. walter becker and john paul jones have the money but not the hassle of being famous

  • well put!

  • I see where your coming from. I remember reading an interview of John Paul Jones talking about the perks of being famous, but not famous enough to be mobbed everywhere. Seems like a good trade-off. But, hey, being half of Steely Dan, Becker should get what he deserves. Even if he is a dickhead. (He probably is)

  • I guess I'm one of those few people that WOULD recognize Jones. I'm betting I could probably feel his presence from at least a few miles out. lol.

  • They do rush the songs Now. Too bad. It's half of the song.

  • Thanks for the upload.

  • Steely Dan! Just the best. Truly!

  • Aah such a smooth tune :D

  • Saw " The Dan " at the Beacon NYC Aug 11....show was all requests by Internet. I have to say....Fagen was not inpsired...he sang like he was in a rush to get done. They only played for 1.30hr.....maybe it was an off night?

  • Boo! I'm heading out to Memphis to see them this Friday. I got screwed out of seeing them last year and in 2006 when they toured with Mike McDonald. I am actually afraid some bullcrap like that will happen. I saw some Rent Party clips and wasn't inspired. I still love 'em though.

  • Probably Becker's best effort at lead guitar. Song brings back such great memories of way back when... Someone spark one up!

  • MORE MORE STEELY!.... great stuff the masters of jazz.... keep em commin... friend me man, like your style...

  • im new to this band and just one word: wow

  • Ok , Donald has a singing style similar to Stevie.

  • when i dont like people i say ' five names that i can hardly stand to hear.. including yours and mine and 1 more twat who isn't here. magical song.

  • This was around 2000 right? Two Against Nature tour? I liked Tom Barney on bass, he gave the whole band a funkier edge. And Fagen with his Ray Charles shades!!!

  • beautiful, thanks for sharing

  • The best, I am such a big fan

  • the original with Michael McDonald to this song is just kick ass. Excellent Songwriters and musicians, noone can top this band PERIOD. Must be a true steely dan fan to understand this band.

  • haha donald fagen reminds me of ray charles when he does that with his head

  • great spiritual night song

  • Wow. Great version of this song.

  • the best

  • walter becker is the guitarist

  • The name of the great guitarist ?

  • I have decided that this is my theme song. Maybe "Hey Nineteen", too.. not "Cousin Dupree." Definitely not "Cousin Dupree." =D

  • After hearing Fagen, I decided I would rather be a "vocalist" like him (than try to be a "singer" like others)...

  • This is as close to the "I-Ching" as most of us will get. Not to be confused with the "Ka-Ching" of Wal-Mart.

  • okay that is class lol

this guys got good taste for music

  • katy lied - good stuff

  • I miss those background vocals by Michael Mc Donald..

  • Hell yeah! Who knew becker pulls of things like that? I sure didn't know...

  • Me neither! The man is the epitome of good taste.

  • sweet soulful solo by becker .... top post !!

    Thank you !!!!

  • Love this song. Awesome performance.

  • No kidding, bpohlson, there can be only one incarnate of the greatest music duo to ever walk the earth. Amazing piece. Although I adore the Aja album, it was Katy Lied that delved me into Don and Walter's work, and this song in particular endowed more of a compositional energy that I had thought possible at first glance, being the first track I initially heard. Best song on Katy Lied, Dr. Wu taking a close second. :D

  • You're right about Katy Lied being their best album. My second favorite was Countdown to Ecstasy. What I find mind boggling is that when the group releases their "Greatest Hits", it seems like they leave out all their best songs. With their Aja album, Steely Dan became somewhat too easy-listening, too smooth-jazz, for my taste.

  • No one will EVER be like Steely Dan. Ever.

  • Agreed.

  • @bpohlson great song....U should see them live at least once. Great muscians.

  • This song just ain't the same without Michael Mcdonalds backing vocals! Hearing him in the background on the studio version gives me the chills!

  • Check out guitar George- he knows all the chords! (I know his name is Walter, that's from a Dire Straits song)

  • I never knew that was about Steely Dan?

  • it's not...it's just applicable. Sultans of Swing, is about a jazz band being dissed by a bunch of kids that can't relate to the music...but you know that, right?

  • What a treat to see these guys work. And they hire really good players, don't they? Everyone's got great chops. Speaking of chops, dis Fagin get dental prosthetics done at some point? Those canines of his look fierce. Thanks for posting this. The "Kid Charlemagne" video's a knockout too.
