  • The colossus of clout, the colossus of clout!

  • To this day the only ballplayer to be truly bigger than the game!

  • Wow, Ruth's voice sounds terrible, so gravelly D:

  • I am now 72 years old and I was 8 years old in 1947 when my father took me to the Stadium to see Babe say goodbye. We sat in the upper deck in left field. One of the most treasured moments of my life. But now, I am a huge Red Sox fan as most of my life was in Boston, although all my school days were in New York City. (Queens)

  • I too, was amazed when I learned that Hank had almost 3800 hundred more at bats than Babe Ruth. I have to agree, there is Babe Ruth, & then there is everyone else.

  • The sultan of swat.

  • "Your national past-time: baseball, the only *real* sport, I think, in the world." If American baseball had a slogan, that would be it. That pretty much says it all.

  • His voice is ilke that from al the cigars and alcohol

  • i dont even watch baesball or know anything about the game but i know that no1 will be ever as good as that guys a legend he made baseball n when you think of baseball you think of 1 man BABE RUTH!

  • Babe Ruth could of hit 800 home runs if he didn't pitch the first years of his career. One the best left-handed pitchers in the A.L. I believe that Hank Aaron should still have the home run record.

  • @jayhawklife88 Ruth lost 75 homers to an archaic foul ball rule that they finally did away with after the 1930 season. The rule said that an umpire could rule a ball foul if he thought that it twisted foul AFTER leaving the ballpark!!

  • @jayhawklife88 800 ? try 900+ .. the guy was pitching for about 6 yrs before switching solely to hitting .. could've easily had close to 900 and possibly approaching 1000 had he concentrated on hitting for those other 6 yrs .. if he had concentrated on hitting from the start his home run record would be 'untouchable' today, 80 yrs later .. as it is he still made it to 714 which is ridiculously high .. the 'babe' is one of a kind

  • Babe, was actually the first and only...no one can change that. He is the bomb.... poor choices at times, of course, but he was the one and only. Yes, there will be others to follow

  • is that his actuall voice?

  • @firebolt120 Yes.He had throat cancer and was undergoing cobalt treatment at this time. His hair turned white due to treatment and his voiced was greatly affected, making it gravelly. His normal speaking voice was similar to Clark Gable`s.

  • @habde I agree with you man....But baseball more then any other sport you look at individual numbers...And the Babe has some of the greatest numbers of all time....it just sucks theat he never got to play against all of the best of his era....if he did and had the same numbers then he would without a doubt be the greatest.

  • He never played against black people....NEVER!!!!How can he even be considered the greatest then?????????

  • @jerry85g You make it sound like he personally chose not to play against black people. The baseball color line was in effect back then. However, we have his stats to back up his claim as one of the greatest players and a rich history that shows what kind of man he was and how much he did for baseball.

By your logic, you also can't call him (or anyone else) the greatest because he never played against the players that came before or after him or the ones on his own team. That's just stupid.

  • @jerry85g (continued from previous comment) And anyway, baseball is a team sport. Individuals don't win, teams do. Games aren't one on one competitions between players so you can't really say one player is better than another because they beat them in a game. Like I said before, though, we have tons of stats and records that we can compare and there's no way that Babe Ruth isn't one of the greatest.

You can say he ate, drank, and smoked a lot but don't insult the Bambino in regards to The Game.

  • @jerry85g

Yes Babe was one of the first men to barnstorm with the Negro Leagues and took abuse from Landis for doing so. They were his friends and he broke bread with them. A lot of his suspension in 1922 was because he would not stop. He did get a hit off Satchel Paige. There is even a picture of Babe holding a black bay in the early 20's when no white man would do it. he was at a black orphanage. He love all mankind no matter what credd color or belief.

  • 1. Ruth played a shorter season than Maris 2. Ruth had far fewer at-bats than Aaron

  • The best to ever play the game with his home run numbers and his pitching numbers no one comes close. Nolan Ryan didnt hit 100 hrs in his career.

  • he is the best who ever played the game he is the game not hank aaron or that barry pussy bonds

  • My grandfather met Babe the night of the second Louis Schmeling fight at Yankee Stadium. Babe sat ringside, and Grandpa, a New York City Police officer at the time, escorted Babe to his seat. Grandpa always loved telling that story to us.

  • @vccstudents That's a pretty neat story. It seems like celebrities and athletes are out of tough with the average joe these days.

  • I LOVE the point the Babe makes how you can't just become a baseball player later in life. You've got to grow up with it, to appreciate it's nuances and to competely understand the game . I remember in high school our star senior QB who was athletic and could run with the ball, tried out for baseball. He wanted to play with his football friends who also played bball. He was cut the first day, even tho he probably wouldve been the best athlete on the team. He embarrassed himself out there.

  • @helmet959 same with alot of sports, you could get the fastest, strongest person, yet if they havent grown up with it or appreciate the game, they just end up embaressing themselves. I'm from Australia, and was in New York this year. I don't really know much about Baseball, but while i was in New York, i got to meet Hank Aaron and now watch the game all the time.

  • The home run numbers are not the point. Ruth started out as a pitcher. Think of all the at bats he lost for years, being a pitcher. He was also a 20 game winner, the best lefty in the American League, and once pitched almost 30 consecutive shut out innings in the World Series.

So here was the great slugger...also a great pitcher. He was bigger than life. No one can compare.

  • @ WWEFaNOFKANE1997 he had throat cancer

  • Bonds, what about McQuire, gee anyone can hit over 60 a year with all t he steriods.

It's disgusting. Maris had a hell of a time, no one wanted to see the record broken and the press hated him.I always thought he was one honest person who wished

he never did it, it ruined his life. But the family was all there to cheer on McQuire.

  • babe ruth was a regular on boston red sox pitching staff in 1915. as a pitcher for the boston red sox, babe won 87 games plus the three games he pitched in world series play. In his first year with the new york yankees, babe played the outfield and hit 54 home runs. 1914 games pitched 4 innings pitched 22 won 2 lost 1 percentage .667 hits given up 21 runs allowed 12 bases on balls 7 strike out 2 earned run average 3.91 St. Mary's *1912*

  • Like Babe Himself said........"there's One Game, BASEBALL that Stands out above all others...".....GOD BLESS BABE RUTH, and GOD BLESS AMERICA'S PASTTIME........Past, Present, and FUTURE, That Is!!

  • 12 people wish they could hit like him

  • baltimore still loves its babe.

  • Did his illness make his voice sound like that?

  • @WWEFaNOFKANE1997 yes he smoked alot of cigars and drank alot the night life finally caught up with him

  • @WWEFaNOFKANE1997 no, he just likes to talk like that... -_-"

    of course it did!

  • @jingeshan24 smartass much?

  • @WWEFaNOFKANE1997 huh? improve your english and then comment pal...

  • @jingeshan24 improve prove my english? son, maybe you're the one who needs to do that, but i don't want to fight on youtube.

  • El más grande de los grandes.

  • fuck you zzahier i bet im 10 times older than

  • @10ecboy no one

  • Hank Aaron will always be the all time HR leader

Roger Maris will always be the single season HR leader

but Babe Ruth will always be baseball

  • newyorkyanks22 Keep in mind Aaron Batted 3,793 more times than Ruth. If Ruth would have batted as much as Aaron, Ruth would have hit approx 1,125 HR's. Theres no getting around it. Now, was Aaron really the best?

Ruth still the best all around player in baseball history. Think not, look at his Pitching record. 4 straight 20 win seasons. No Ball player in history ever accomplished that. Theres BABE RUTH, then there is everyone else

  • @newyorkyanks22 But didn't Hank Aaron play more games than Babe Ruth., I don't mean to knock him., he is great but I think it is unfair to say that he broke Babe Ruth's HR record. If Babe Ruth had played the same amount of games his HR record would be higher, don't you think?

  • @newyorkyanks22 unless of course the records are broken in the post-steroids era.

  • If you look at his career bating stats if he wouldn´t have pitched he would still be the all time home run leader

  • fantastic speech

  • Henry Aaron is the true homerun king. But Babe Ruth stood so far above everyone in his time he was like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Lance Armstrong. Babe Ruth was the greatest power hitter to ever play the game of baseball. PERIOD!!!

  • He died the same day of the year as Elvis Presley. Two kings going out on the same day. God Bless you Babe. Your name is synonomous with the word baseball and your records will live for an eternity. RIP

  • He is baseball - hit for power -average- was a terrific pitcher and they built a stadium so all his fans could see him - All this and he didn't even take care of himself like the players of today do.- Players like Dimaggio and Williams were in awe of him as everybody else was after the Bambino retired!- Just to take a picture with him was a highlight of their lives!

  • this is so sad i wish he didn't die

  • @sabreena12341 Considering he would over 100 now, that's kind of a tough request to make...

  • Babe and Hank deserve to be one and two, Bonds does not even deserve to be listed

  • my voice may be loud

    above the crowd

    and my words

    just a bit uncouth

    but I'll stand and shout

    until the last man's out

there never was a guy like Ruth

  • Greatest all around ballplayer of all time

  • hank aaron needed 12156 at bats to get 714 and babe ruth needed 8399 at bats. Babe has a 342 AVG and hank has a 305 AVG. Babe is the greatest athlete of all time and the homerun king!

  • @huggybobo88 and he has almost a hundred wins as a pitcher! greatest of all time!

  • it sounds like he was in pain talking..

  • Sucks that he chewed and smoked so much. :(

  • Maybe he was or wasn't the greatest player ever. But in this speech you can hear his complete love for the game. He loved it more than anyone before or since. And not many players today can understand that.

  • hank aaron also took amphetamines. Barry bonds took steroids, like the probable new HR king Arod.

The babe did is just with beer and hot dogs

  • I think his smoking caught up to him.

  • Babe Ruth is the real home run king.

He played in Yankee Stadium which was a large park.

If Ruth played as long as Aaron and in Aaron's park, he would have hit over 1000 home runs.

Bonds was juiced up and a fake.

    Babe Ruth all the way.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • no 1 knows how the real best home run hitter was cause he was in the negro leagles josh gibson hit more than 800 home runs

  • @yygghhh You know, I have a lot of respect for this argument, but it's not quite the same thing. I definitely think those players in the Negro League should have their names out there but the record is for MLB. It's...kind of like saying someone in British Premiere League Football has X number of goals and is the all-time goal leader, but marking it with an asterisk because another player in Major League Soccer in the States has even more. It's not the same league...

  • fuck hank aaron and fuck barry bonds babe ruth was a legend and figure that still represents baseball today. Hank aaron isnt half the man that this guy was

  • @penepapidulce you forgot lou gerrhig and yogi well shit all the yankees from 20's 40's

  • The greatest baseball player of all time.

  • Sounds like Leonard Cohen

  • Nobody's better than the Babe

  • People like Babe dont come around too often. His game of Baseball was the game of Baseball. You cant beat that, and nobody will.

  • Every once in awhile, a person comes along who's larger than the sport itself. Babe Ruth was bigger than baseball. Babe Ruth built the game. When one thinks of baseball, they think of Babe Ruth.

  • sounds like he smoked too many cigars

  • his voice is creepy

  • "It is now known that Ruth suffered from nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPCA), a relatively rare tumor located in the back of the nose near the eustachian tube. Contemporary management for NPCA includes concurrent chemotherapy and radiation therapy." Uuuum yeah. This sort of thing might make your voice sound...oh I don't know. CREEPY!?!

  • @21cjlewis he had throat cancer dumbass

  • Thanks for sharing this. Even to those who never saw him play ball, the Babe will always be a baseball "treasure."

  • tobacco and alcohol killed The Sultan of Swat.

  • @jevitigre it was more like alcohol and doughnuts!

  • absolutely greatest player ever. and he won 20 games as a pitcher one year aint too bad. RIP Babe

  • Aaron had 3965 more at-bats than Ruth. Aaron also had 4363 more at-bats and played almost 6 full years more than Gehrig, with only 302 more RBI than the Iron Horse. Really puts things into perspective.

  • @angeltosome thats cause aaron is a piece of shit

  • @penepapidulce no he isn't. hank aaron is a gentleman and has class. i can't stand barry bonds. babe ruth is the baseball standard. but aaron was probably the best player ever. he is still ahead in total bases run. he has something like 12 miles.

  • WOW!! very moving speech by one of greatest to ever play the game.

  • I cant control my emeotions when i hear The Babe talk...Wish i were there.I would give my life to have been born in that era.

  • @curious824 I'm right there with ya. Honestly.

  • @curious824 there are stories in which a fan who Ruth kept seeing asking for his autograph and when asked what are you doing with these baseballs, the man replied to Ruth: it pays for food on my table to ffed my family.Ruth replied by telling him to buy a bunch of balls when he sells one and to bring them to him to sign them all.Now thats a Real HUMANITARIAN.

  • Babe Ruth .............. a baseball legend. UNTARNISHED BY ANY SCANDALS OF STEROID NOR CHEATING!!! ALL HATS OFF TO THE BABE!!!!

  • He got a tumor in the back of his throat from chewing tobacco

  • best baseball player to live

  • The reason he sounded so bad was because they removed a tumor and jumbled the nerves. Babe's cancer was not throat cancer cause by his life style, He had a genetic cancer Nasel phalangeal carcinoma. He would have gotten it anyway.

  • @msmatinee If anyone knew who you were, they would do 3 backflips and a somersault...You exemplify what Ruth was all about...A Real Humanitarian.

  • he sounds like that cause he smoked

  • i agree... Bonds cheated... what a shame to any sports player...

  • i agree y put it in the records if he wuz using steroids he passed the drug test and he beat hank arron not babe

  • to me. the real home run king is hank aaron. Barry bonds is on steroids. noone who took steroids should have there name in the record books. who agrees?

  • @kingchaos123 Yeah but Babe Ruth could do just about anything in Baseball.

  • @kingchaos123 Hank Aaron won the Home Run title honorably, Barry Bonds is a cheater and doesn't count.

  • @kingchaos123 But Hank Aaron was a designated hitter so he could have a longer career, plus Babe Ruth played five years as a pitcher so for five years he could have had much more home runs.

  • @kingchaos123 What does your comment have to do with this clip?

  • @kingchaos123 steroids are not a way to cheat, they are a supplament, just like any other testosterone stimulant, creatine, protein powder or any other crap all athletes take nowdays.

do me a favor, dont judge results on nutrition because it wont matter how many steroids you would take without adding tons of hard work to it.

  • @jingeshan24 You keep telling yourself that. Protein and creatine are both NATURAL substances that the human body creates already, and a protein shake is just essentially an efficient delivery of amino acids that can be absorbed easier than say a slab of turkey. However, the gorillas and apes in today's baseball are a disgrace because they abuse steroids and the evidence is undeniable, new gaps between your teeth much? 100 homers, 1000 homers who cares the sport is a joke now w roid abuse.

  • @Con7ent and steroids are "just essentially an efficient delivery of" testosterone.

steroids tell our body to make more testosterone and GH, nothing else.

creatine unlike what you BELIEVE is a CONCENTRATED SUBSTANCE which has hundreds of times more creatine in one portion than what you'll get in 10kg of meat.

simply put - this huge amount of creatine is not something your liver should handle on a daily basis.

its not natural, and it's unhealthy - just about as much, if not more, than roids.

  • @kingchaos123 humans will be humans....if steroids was around back then...they would've taken them...it's not like people were once angels in a certain area...humans are scum...period

  • @kingchaos123 agreed. i also think that Roger Maris should still have the single season record as well.

  • @kingchaos123 ummm wake up arron had 2500 more at bats if ruth would have had 2500 more at bats the number would be very different

  • @kingchaos123 Everyone who is NOT IN DENIAL agrees with you!

  • The thing is the pitchers then weren't as good. Scuting sucked compared to now, other countries, tv, video footage etc. Plus ruth never played against blacks, nor did he ever see a slider!!

  • @BLong114 if he was ever compared to josh gibson, idk how good he wood've felt about himself

  • @BLong114 i no. imagine if josh gibson got to play against him. idk how good he wood've felt about himself

  • @BLong114 look up "dead ball era" that's when ruth played

  • :[

    i love babe ruth!!

  • this is what happens when you smoke .... wakka wakka wakka :*((

  • Paul Ellis is AWESOME 7.1 RULES PETER MOYES

  • And of course, like some have already said, if Ruth had 375ft power alleys and 400ft center fields to aim at, his home run totals would be nintendo-like... and his supposed fielding problem would be greatly eased. Of course, he was a good corner outfielder... all of his peers, who actually saw him play, said so. He doesnt need his pitching stats to separate himself from the pack, even though they do. His slugging average is still ridiculously far ahead of everyone.

  • Ruth could hit. He could run. He stole second and third on consecutive pitches against the NYG in the Series. True he didn't play against blacks. But neither did the rest of MLB... so everybody has the same handicap or advantage. Ruth would still come out on top. Blacks didn't have to pitch to Ruth regularly either. And this thing about 'modern players.. if Ruth came along in 1955, with the same nutrition, medical advantages, etc, and he was still GHRuth, he'd have been that much better.

  • did he always have this "creepy voice"? Was it his smoking?

  • Ruth suffered from naso-pharyngeal cancer. And he WAS an enthusiastic cigar smoker.

His pre-cancer voice, however, was clear and powerful. There are probably some examples of Babe's voice at its best -- big, booming, with a Baltimore (Ball-more?) accent -- on YouTube:) --

  • no he said goodbye to baeball because he had throat cancer from cigars and thats why his voice was like that

  • @tatomuck18 No. This was when he had throat cancer.

  • very

  • depressing!

  • What year was this speech?

  • AdognamedOp--

One day, you'll have something called "The Internet."

When that happens, you'll be able to look up all sorts of stuff, including when Ruth made this speech.

  • Yeah right satchmo, and I bet I'll be able to watch audio of Babe Ruth speeches too.

  • @AdognamedOp 1947

  • @AdognamedOp 1948, As George Herman 'Babe' Ruth passed away on August 16 of that year.

  • jeez, he was a dying man yet he got up there and gave a heartfelt speech. Definitely one of my all-time heroes

  • benign means non cancerous and Malignant means cancerous.. its as plain as that!

  • Rest in peace Babe you were and will always be a class act!!

  • The English invented Baseball.

  • wrong, it's an American invention.

  • baseball was not invented by americans.. idiot

  • The way he sounds in this speech makes me sad but its a beautiful thing that he goes up their and gives this speech

  • UM GRANDE JOGADOR

  • he didnt have cancer he had a malignant tumor in his throat dumbasses get the facts staright

  • @Pizzle012 which is cancer rofl

  • @watzimagiga no its not stupid.. my mom had a tumor in her neck took out so u tellin me she got cancer no dumb ass is just a tumor

  • @Pizzle012 rofl at u calling me a dumb ass when u have no idea what your talking about. There are 2 main catagories of tumours, malignant and benign. In human medicine cancer is generally used to mean a malignant tumour (which is what your saying babe ruth had). What do you think cancer is then???

Your mum likely had a benign tumour on her neck which was removed, and is not referred to as "cancer" and i never said it was. In veterinary medicine however, cancer refers to both malg/benign

  • @watzimagiga im not bout to argue with yo ass over utube so say whatever u want retard i cud really careless

  • @Pizzle012 theres no argument. A malignant tumor IS cancer. Google it.

Wikipedia - Cancer /ˈkænsə(r)/ ( listen) (medical term: malignant neoplasm)

Neoplasm is another word for tumor etc.

  • umm that's what a malignant tumor is..

  • the last world series he ever saw was the first one that jackie robinson was in

6 months after the yankess won in the 7th

game he died its pretty sad he was a american hero

    R.I.P babe ruth

  • he had cancer

  • is this him talking? man he must have been really sick!

  • Yep. Throat cancer.

  • He didn't actually have throat cancer; he had a rare cancer where all the stuff inside the head meets, mostly at the base of a sinus.

Hit throat was actually unaffected; it was the nerve damage to the throat that made him sound like this.

  • @tatomuck18 i agree. it kills me that the house is coming down.

  • burn771--

I still can't figure out the purpose for a "new" Yankee Stadium.

I can assure you, it will never be loved.

  • i agree. yankee sadium was special to me. and american icon. the new stadium may be state of the art but lacks the character of the old one.

  • burn771--

I will now tell you why the new stadium was built.

The New Yankee Stadium was built because it can have "Sky Boxes."

This means that a few very rich, corporate-types can now have drug & alcohol fueled orgies while writing off much of it as a business expense.

For this, a needless billion dollars plus was spent and a landmark was razed.

  • Babe Ruth is the Champ!

  • When Babe Ruth was giving this speech, this was when he had his throat cancer. He could barely talk because he didn't sound too good.

  • the babe was baseball

  • hank aron beat babe ruth in home runs.hank hit 755 home runs

  • Yea and it took him over 2500 more at bats to do it!

  • thelyricalmiricle--

Ruth spent 5 years less as a position player.

Also, not to take anything away from Aaron, tell us all about the TIMES Aaron won 20 games as a pitcher.

  • Ruth's pitching stats were just awesome. Had he ONLY been a pitcher, God knows what his lifetime stats would've been. Just an incredible talent and so popular. There is a book out called "The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs" and analyzes the many near misses and also exhibition home runs in 1927, the year he hit 60. I've almost given up on today's players with all of the drugs. Those records are bogus.

  • LesbianVampireLover--

If Babe had remained a pitcher, he still would have gone into the Hall Of Fame.

  • Absolutely. And he held the record for most consecutive World Series innings until Whitey Ford broke it around 1961. Of course, it remains to be seen whether his arm would've held up, but he had such an iron constitution that he probably could've kept on, maybe even win 300 games if he was pitching for the Yanks!

  • Ruth overshadowed Gehrig.

The scary thing is that Lou Gehrig's first at bat on June 2, 1925 with the Yankees. He died on June 2, 1941. Weird

  • you gotta let it grow with u couldn't have said it better ruth!!!!! r.i.p

  • There would be NO GAME TODAY without the Greatest of Them All !,,Was he the best ever ?? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT ! FIRST HE WAS THE BEST PITCHER,THEN ,HE WAS THE BEST HITTER !..He will NEVER be beaten !

  • Ruth didn't need to be good runner, most of his hits were home runs

  • wow idk about anyone else but i got so much from hearing that one speach...great baseball players are made not born, they start when they're 6 or7 not 15 or 16(the thing is how many kids want to be great at baseball when they're 6). tim duncan didn't even pick up a basketball til he was 16 or 18.

  • if your a dodgers fan check my channel its dodgerfied!!! LA ALL THE WAY
