One of my mum's favourites - I was named for this song! But I remember there was a version with lyrics... does anyone know who sang it? Can't seem to find it here on YouTube... I can only remember " Diamonds and pearls, ooh what a girl is.. No-la!"
Great tune, I put this music on a comedy film I made in the 60's. Always wanted to know what it was called. Thanks for the video, brings back a lot of happy memories.
@lauriebooth It's fascinating that you used this for a comedy film in the 60s! Were you aware at the time that Tommy Smothers had recorded this same song with Dicky as part of "The Incredible Jazz Banjoist" on the album *Curb Thy Tongue, Knave!* in 1964? I'm actually doing a project on that recording and I would love to interview about your decision to use the song in your film. Would you have any for an interview? I could send you my contact information to get started . . .
Thanks, I just found another Hi-Tone going through some of my records. It's not a colored shellac though, it just basic black. Some good songs on it I'll post soon.
Why am I unable to download this one?

@lauriebooth What was the comedy film about, and how did you decide to use this music?
mccar408 11 months ago
@mccar408 Hi the film was a comedy about a butterfly hunter, a friend had an old 78 record and gave me a tape of the music.

Oh yes, I love the work he did with Hal Roach.

I think the Vincent Lopez Orch did the original in the early 20s.

I thought Felix Arndt originally did it. I also have that version from 1915 on a Victor "Batwing". I'll try to get it posted in a few days.
