Such a shame, I love these old 'Art Deco' style buildings.....Cinemas now are just like sitting in a grey shoebox being blasted with sound?? There won't be any decent buildings around soon just modern boxes.
...and why do the Brain Dead feel the need to go into these places and destroy everything?? ....not a very constructive generation ! Sorry Rant over :)
We had three cinemas in Banbury at one time, one of them chicargo rock is now routed in. tthere is only one left, went to see benjamin button a few weeks ago, i dont like it in there really, its always going out of focus at the beginning. So soddenget up and go in the cinema in the cinema i tell you, its disgrace in my view
fond fond memories on this all. my brother used to work at what was tescos then, i remember going to hillards round the corner near the post office too.!
they should list this building, or at best restor it to it's former glory.. they've killed the baths at sun lane.! what more do they want.!
Why does the fate of this building have to be a fait accompli. Surely there are alternative uses for a cinema. Wakefield people and the council should try to get it listed. Companies like Odeon are just asset stripping and I would never go near a multiplex. It's a real cinema or nothing for me.
it was only tescos that was wilko's is.was in the cinema 2weeks ago it's such a shame to see it in the state it is now.shame it's going soon why they are tearing down these great buildings is beyond me fools!!!
Its getting replaced by apartments, id rekon they wont be fully occupied for quite a while.
Peoples appetite for buying apartments is drying up as theres too many developments uncertainty in the housing market. The owners missed the boat on this one id rekon.
si33uk - i might be wrong but as i remember it from 1979 on, it was Tesco's at the bottom of Kirkgate. There used to be a Hillards where Mad Harrys was, but that too ended up being Tescos after the firm bought out Hillards. Tescos played dirty, had two stores in Wakefield then pulled out completely having crushed any opposition. Ironically, Morrisons then opened in the Ridings in 1984.
Even now the roundabout at the bottom of Kirkgate is known as Tescos.
nice, why the hell is a hillards poster in there, hillards was a very small supermarket chain that used to be where wilkinsons now stands and thay had 1 where mad harrys used to be,
