My working odyssey displays that "weird pattern" when it has no game in it. So I suggest the problem lies in the cartridge port. Since you already said you cleaned it thuroughly how about you try to recondition the pins. What happens is that repeated game swapping pushes those pins back making a less reliable connection. Take a pen or small toothpick and slightly and very carefully pull those pins back out so they contact the cartridge better.
I sympathise for you, but why are you blaming the console and Ebay? the seller or you are at fault. Did the item description say it was in full working order? if so the seller is to blame, if it didn't well...buyer beware!
I don't know much about the disassembly of this but if you can, try to get access to the cartridge port and clean it as thoroughly as you can. Someone below said this system is finnicky and I wouldn't know, but if it's as bad as you say it was it's likely there's still stuff down in there you can't see.
Also you might want to contact eBay if the seller misrepresented the product.
my german version is called G7000 , and is build from a costumer called Phillips ..... maybe someone want to know that....if not, it's not my problem :D
even though you say you've cleaned the contacts, the odyssey2 was a beast when it came to contact cleanliness. Back in the early eighties, wiith a brand new system and a brand new kc munchkin cart, we still were only batting 50% boot when the cart sat for over a week. The contacts need to be IMMACULATE in order for it to boot.
I got my odyssey 2 complete with box and 16 games for 25 bucks. It was missing the power adapter but luckily my Genesis power adapter fits it.

Would you mind adding a "sort of" tag or something in the title of this video, to hint at what the video is actually about?
