mind blowing but Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa was began to fear USTAD SHAIK DAWOOD KHAN SAHEB the true god of tabla , he is one and only but he never showed off.this two ustads r the only god of tabla ^_^ IF ANY ONE DARE TO COMMENT then let me tell you i can prove it.
USTAD SHAIK DAWOOD KHAB SAHEB IS THE TRUE GOD OF TABLA ^_^
God manifests himself in so many different forms - it takes a person of humility who can see god in his different forms. When I see and hear Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakwa I see and hear God.
How about instead of arguing who's better, lets learn to appreciate all musicians in general for whatever of their talent we are privileged to witness.
I'm a big fan of classical music, but one thing I've noticed on so many videos on youtube is that people are arguing over nationality rather then the music itself. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Music knows no boundaries, the essence of it brings stillness in one's mind and heart. Guess you've never really heard music then. Great post by the way. I can only imagine what this felt live.
@gpatelk Music does know boundaries. The best Tabla players are from only a few countries, the best Turkish musicians are from Turkey, the best Venezuelan musicians are from Venezuela, etc. Music is all cultural...that is a boundary; misunderstand the culture, misunderstand the music. It's these rivalries that contain these cultural secrets. Humans need rivalry to thrive.
Clearly even with this very old and bad quality recording you can see and hear this is a master of the Tabla playing. He has an ease nobody today has(from the few great Tabla players I saw perform) ! And outstanding performance and great post.
A favorite,if only a genius like him was alive to play today and be recorded properly.
This is my request to all the people who commented on this great maesterio's tabla solo there are no Limits in fine art there is no india and pakistan in fine art no america or afghanistan fine art but specially music is for all the people over the world so please stop fighting on this topic that he belongs to pakistan or he belongs to india...................... Music is 4 everyone my friends......
He's ripping the Tabla apart at a ripe old age of 70! Insane!
I prefer the older generation, there was a methodical and precise way they went about playing the Drut and Athidrut Layas, not like artists today who want to move straight to the "showing off" instead of going through the traditional path of Kayadas Tukras Peshkaars Relas etc
LOL@ pakis claiming this man. to make things a lil more interesting for u guys, his name Ahmadjaan is hinting on Afghanistan =p now i wont say he is from afghanistan but im sure his ancestors came from afghanistan or something. Anyways the point is hes a representation of all those places because we all have the same classical music and appreciation for it.
ONCE IN lUCKNOW BHATKHANDE MUSIC COLLEGE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR USTAD THIRKAWA SAHEB PLAYING WITH MAY BE BIRJU MAHARAJ OR GOPIKISHAN WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG KHAN SAB NE KAHA ARE HUM BUDE HO GAYE HAI LEKIN PHIR KHAN SAB NE LAHAR PAKRA AUR SHURO HO GAYE WAH KYA BAAT HAI MASHA ALLAH WO BEETE DI
But I still don't know what it is. What exactly is that thing that defines Thirakwa Ji's playing and separates it from the other great masters?
Anyone with a good amount of Tabla playing experience, I will greatly appreciate any response from you. You are welcome to respond and give your opinions even if you are not a Tabla player!
@selectivesloth I think its his thirakwaness. He has a personal way of presenting this stuff. He is owning the instruments voice so much, along with the diversity of its gharanas, and making his own artistic statement. I don't think its anything technical, one of the greatest observations i heard was that thirakwa's feel was very WIDE. I find that description nice to compare against someone like kanai dutta or even swapan-ji who have a very tight sound...just my 2cents
I would prefer to use the word "depth" instead of "width" here. There is a certain depth in the sound which he produced. Many other great Tabla players tend to play with a lot of crispness in place of depth. Once I read somewhere that his Tabla playing was characterized by an exquisite mix of seriousness as well as playfulness. And I couldn't agree with this observation more, each time I watched this video.
And let's not forget even for a second that this is VERY poor recording quality as compared to current day standards employed by masters such as Ustad Zakir Hussain.
Unfortunately there is no high quality recording of legends like Thirakwa Saheb, Pandit Anokhelal and countless others. And EVEN then, their playing reflects a totally different class.
There is subtle differences in playing the tabla. You can observe the difference by the rendering of the same bol's. While farukhabad gharana is preferred by the purists there is a lot of controversy about which style is the best. A few differences in the different gharana's are
1) In Farukhabad Gharana the kinar (The sound that is generated at the near rim) is invariably a 4 finger phenomenon. Here all 4 fingers are used to generate the "Na" sound. others use 3 fingers ("Ta")
2) Farukhabad gharana has a different challan. Its considered more melodious. The timing of the strike is different thought it finally catches the same "Sama".
3) The Dagga or the bass is also used in a unique way in Farukhabad. Its either only the index finger of the other 3 fingers depending on the bol
There is something, I don't what it is, I am still trying to figure it out; that is very distinct about the way Thirakwa Ji plays. I know too little Tabla to technically understand what masters play, but when I go by my ear and feeling, I can feel something very different about Thirakwa Ji's playing. His Tabla speaks differently than other masters, is one way to put it.
Having said that, I can only dream of what he sounded like "in real time". I can only imagine that a live Thirakwa concert or a baithak would have transported me to some other land.
I would like to know from some Tabla professional, as to what separates Thirakwa Ji from other great masters such as Zakir Hussain, Anindo Chatterjee, etc.
Apart from ease of playing and Vajan, I haven't been able to see any other difference.
2)There is something very magical about the way Thirakwa Ji played. Firstly, we can all see that when he plays there is absolutely no sign whatsoever of him exerting any effort! He plays as if he were some kind of a "Bol-generating" machine! Then, the "Vajaan" in his hand is out of the world. These are all low-quality recordings and still they sound better than Zakir Hussain's ultra-high quality recordings of today. I wonder what he would sound like if the current technology was available to him
1) Thirakwa Ji's Tabla is tuned quite low. Maybe it's a Kali Char or something close to that. In contrast most modern-day players use sharper sounding Tablas. Why is this so? I personally love the sound of low-frequency Tablas; they sound more earthen, deeper and the experience of playing or listening to that sound is meditative. Sharper-sounding Tablas seem to be more fit for jazzy displays and fun-filled performances. I would like to get an opinion on this from an experienced Tabla player.
I have a bit of experience playing Tabla; two years approximately and I am gifted with fingers that take to Tabla very naturally. Many people have a stiff hand.
I have only recently stumbled upon Ustad Thirakwa and I am completely astounded. I wanted to figure out what separates him from other Tabla players and so I decided to listen to Zakir Hussain's Teen Tal solo immediately after this video.
This is great. But there were others who did not have the fortune of long life like him. The one and only Tabla Maestro imho is the Late Ustad Bashir Hussein "Goga" whose one rare live recording says it all. I got one off of esnips. If any one has any of his son's videos Ustad Sajjad "Papu" please upload.
Btw another unique maestro is late Ustad Amir Hussein Khan who had a gifted hand like Ustad Goga.
What about Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Allah Rakha, Pandit Kishan Mahraj, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Pandit Swapan Chauduri, Ustad Surinder Mann, Ustad Rashid Mustafa Thirakwa, Pandit Samar Saha, and I can go on and on..
hindustanimusiclover: listen to these masters Thirakwa and Shaik Dawood from youtube. They have amazing tonal quality, good compositions correctly executed, soul and no gimmicks. Compare some modern tabla players material to these masters . They present pure material non stop for a whole performance, They don't have long pauses between compositions or do long sequences of layakaris or variations before going to double time in their qaida and rela. Peshkar's are also much more compact.
Absolutely I agree with what you saying but I was just responding to SSG kasmir soldier, that though THirakwa saab is perhaps the greatest tabla player ever to grace this earth he is certainly not the only good player in India. There are so many gifted tabla players in India.
what about thtem, they ent too much in comparison to the propa old guys!! these pple actually lived it man...u can here how diferent this is in comparison to the masters of to today. A different league all to gether!!
OK. I would take Surinder Mann (whoever he is) out of that list and I would throw out Samar Saha. Replace them with Kumar Bose, Sarwar Sabri, Sukhwinder Singh Pinky and Akram Khan.
you guys don't seem to understand my comment was in response to SSg kashmir soldier who said Thirakwa saab was the only good player from India, which is simply not true. I believe Thirakwa saab is the greatest master of tabla I was just telling SSG Kashmir soldier that there are other good players in India. Got it?
Your list does not feature Pandit Anokhelaal Mishra, Pandit Samta Prasad, Pandit Kanthe Maharaj, Sabir Khan's father Ustad Keramatullah Khan saab, Pandit Gobinda Bose, Pandit Mahapurush Mishra. The list of great tabla players of India cannot be without these names. Akram khan and Sukhwinder Singh Pinky should not even be mentioned with these names. They are good players but not in the category of great tabla players of India. Oh and I forgot Pandit Suresh Talwalkar.
I see this video literally every single day. Cant help but admire each time the ease of playing of the instrument which Khansaheb demonstrates. The starting Farashbandi is simply amazing and something which Khansaheb really reveled in...I get a spiritual high when I see videos of Khansaheb...its pure meditation...
The taal refers to the time cycle, such as teen taal is 16 beat cycle (with 3 hand claps).
Of playing the tabla - the smaller is the tabla and larger is duggi. Tabla is an Indian derivation from an ancient arabic drum which is why the name is arabic (tabla). The Mridangam was an Indian drum and the present day tabla was derived from both of these types.
There are different syllables that can be played, and when put together with a time cycle you can play as Kayda (Qaidah - arabic for base).
The Tabla was derived from the Pakhawaj (the North Indian counterpart or the Mridangam). The Name Tabla is Arabic. Kayda also means 'rule' or 'law' in Hindi, relating to the type of composition (Kayda followd some basic but rigid rules). There are many styles such as Peshkar, and older styles such as Paran, Gat and Chalan.
it is interesting to note that tirakwa's posture is rock solid steady while his fingers are a blur. the recording is great for those days but still unclear, however tirakwa's every syllable is heard with clarity. god is in the detail..
The things that you are good at are sucking USA's cock to get money and even then you don't appreciate it and you turn your back against them and produce the so called Taliban to kill innocent people in Afghanistan and India for the sake of getting more money. The second thing that you are good at is stealing other peoples Ideas, inovation and culture. But the worst thing is that you act like it was all yours. You would sell your religion, soul, conciousness for money.
You are too young and too ignorant. I wouldn't want to argue with someone whose head is as hard as a concrete block. I will give you a hint though. Go do some research on your background, I am sure you are either Indian or Afghani because Pakistan didn't exist 100 years ago. You have no culture of your own. Whatever you have belongs to either India or Afghanistan. I prefer a dog of india over you because they have more respect, love, understanding and appreciation than you.
superb. I have been a tabla lover for over 20 years now. Never thought I will see this great Ustad's playing. Thank you so much. Past594 you are a superman. to others - don't grab great human beings like this ustad into your petty territorial issues. he belongs to mankind. he created history for all human beings. we all can be proud! His contribution was universal.
UNDOUBTEDLY THIS GREAT ARTIST BELONGS TO TABLA. NOT INDIA OR PAK OR ANYTHING.
UNDOUBTEDLY SOME OF THE BEST "HINDUSTANI" MUSIC HAS COME FROM THE SO CALLED "MUSLIM ARTISTS" AND EVEN LATER FROM PAKISTAN. SO PLEASE FORGET THE BOUNDARIES HERE.
Is mehfil mein to sabhi parawaane jalenge..
ek hee shamaa hai woh,jis ko manzil pehchaanenge..
I feel ashamed to read comments on this video. If you asked Ustadji himself, I am sure he will salp you in the face. PLEASE THINK OF GOOD MUSIC THAT INDIA-PAKISTAN-BANGLADESH-AFGHAN REGION HAS GIVEN TO THE WORLD TOGETHER. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE IT CAME FROM WITHIN THOSE. THE MUSIC REMAINS MUSIC. PERIOD. IT DOES NOT KNOW STUPID BOUNDARIES. THAT IS WHY EVEN TODAY PAK ARTISTS SING "SHANKARAA" OR "BHOOPALI" WITH THE SAME NAMES. FOR THAT MATTER, MANY ARTISTS MARRIED ACROSS RELIGIONS. SO PLEASE!
ssgpunjablahore - u thick twat, ther was no such thing as pakistan in his times.. wen he was at his peak it was all india.. tht jus goes 2 prove hw limited ur knowledge iz. and he was muslim, and ustad mian qadir baksh was born in india punjab, so b4 u comment get a bit of knoledge about these ppl. peace
what is with you pakis that can't take the truth well? all your best musician were from India one way or another. Mehdi hassan born in India and so was the rest of the Players.
@afgpiece the pakis are becoming more & more delusional. They don't realize that at the time when these greatest musicians were around, there WAS NO pakistan....I heard L. Moin Akhtar say at one time that if u get anything by haraam, it will never benefit u. The pakis just don't get it. They got even the country by haram means. that's why it will not prosper.
@afgpiece The truth is that Pakistan has nothing of its own. It's best musicians were from India. With the Taliban and fundamentalism taking over Pakistan, the remaining musicians will either flee Pakistan or they will be hang. Pakistan will soon become a ghost country and it deserves to be so. Pakistan and Pakistanis are the world's scums. They don't value culture and beauty. They are after destruction, hypocrisy and war-mongering. They will soon be destroyed.
SSPUNJABLAHORE-SAALE,BELUND KE HARAMI DO NOT EVER WRITE OR SAY NEGATIVE ABOUT the greatest tabla legend(time tested) USTAD THIRKWA SAHIB- its obvious your half-wit fucked brain is not able to diffrentiate between CLAY and SHIT .
lol he lives 13 years in ur so called pakistan and spend 45 years in India.. and u dare 2 call him pakistani. Abbe chall ma ke lorreee apna gaand mat pesh karna yahan.. Sala haraam ki paidaish, heera mandi ka mashoor rand ke aulaad hai tuu.. Najaiz aulaad sala!! Sala Hindustan tera baab hain or tu apne abuuu ko gali derehe ho.. ma ki chuut par laanat ho teri! Phele tabla sikho tab baat karna yahan randwa sala
There was no Pakistan in the time of Ustad Miyan Qader Bakhs u fake paki..
Ustas Miyan qader Baksh was born in 1902 and died in 1960. Chuutia aadmi kahin ka.. U dont know tabla and ur creating fitna here.. Put a video of ur playing then we will judge.. Bastard fake paki!
Dear Brother from Pakistan , I think Ustad Qadir Baksh would have scolded you like any thing if he had heard you say these kind of words for Ustad Ahmadjan. Music doesnt know countries , religions, races.
how can you call a great ustad like Ahmad ja shit? It shows your respect to music. in music, don't look at whether he is from paki or not. look what he did! be a shame to call him a shit, astaghfurellah
"Ustad" is not his name, it is a kind of title given to great musicians and it actually indicates that he is a Muslim. "Pandit" would indicate Hindu. Like "Usted Allah Rakha" and "Pandit Ravi Shankar."
honestly i have only heard one recording of mian Qadir Baksh...but I have heard tabla players play his composition..the skill level required to even comprehend them is veryyyy high..he was one of the best composers...and one of the best tabla players of all time....the diffrence in style is the main thing, its hard to compare...but in there own gharanas they both are the best....
I am from Pakistan as well. And Myan Baksh Ji was an incredible teacher no doubt. Thirakwa Sahib was incredible in his playing though. I have never heard another tabla player with his nikass. I watched this tape with Tari Khan Sahib and he was floored by Thirakwa's ease of playing. Thirakwa Khansahib is the best of all time....
waaah..ustad ji is a pillar in north indian classical histroy..wordz cannot describe the amazing magic all ustads..or pandit ji's do with..a tabla..and rythm...any person who dedicated there mind ..body and soul to an art sucha as tabla..is praiseworthy and is blessed by the almighty..pls just appreciate the music ..avoid arguing in these music lover's comment section..
gay? are you ok dude? Ahmad jaan is just the best tabla player ever known (After Amir Khesrow Balkhi Saheb). He was the first player who introduced Tabla solo. He is the father of tabla.
The speed, the clarity of the notes. its just amazing.
it is such a complex beat and he is playing it without any difficulty. Pure skill, hard work, hours of practice, dedication. And then once in few decades we get Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa.
It was very surprizing for me to see this vedio. As I have a relation with Lucknow he belongs to and the Sangli were he gained his name and fame. thanks alot for preserving this vedio and bringing it to the global level.Astha Godbole
mind blowing but Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa was began to fear USTAD SHAIK DAWOOD KHAN SAHEB the true god of tabla , he is one and only but he never showed off.this two ustads r the only god of tabla ^_^ IF ANY ONE DARE TO COMMENT then let me tell you i can prove it.

allfieldsreq 2 years ago

The starting Farashbandi is simply amazing and something which Khansaheb really reveled in...I get a spiritual high when I see videos of Khansaheb...its pure meditation...

finesse, accuracy, ease of delivery, true master, feel too small to judge.
Padhans are just awesome, the god of padhans. If not anything else, that is as much as I truly can understand.

hello i love the tabla but i dont understand the different forms of playing it. could anyone please explain a little i know its hard
panchi05 2 years ago
There are many taals like ektaal, jhaptaal, rupak, teental, khehrwa, garud taal, dadra, sulfaktaal, chautaal, and many more.
ram97tabla 2 years ago
The taal refers to the time cycle, such as teen taal is 16 beat cycle (with 3 hand claps).
Of playing the tabla - the smaller is the tabla and larger is duggi. Tabla is an Indian derivation from an ancient arabic drum which is why the name is arabic (tabla). The Mridangam was an Indian drum and the present day tabla was derived from both of these types.
There are different syllables that can be played, and when put together with a time cycle you can play as Kayda (Qaidah - arabic for base).
zad1262 2 years ago

Shame on you.
afgpiece 3 years ago

SO PLEASE!

what is with you pakis that can't take the truth well? all your best musician were from India one way or another. Mehdi hassan born in India and so was the rest of the Players.
Go f youself you worthless piece of sh*t.
afgpiece 3 years ago 11
@afgpiece the pakis are becoming more & more delusional. They don't realize that at the time when these greatest musicians were around, there WAS NO pakistan....I heard L. Moin Akhtar say at one time that if u get anything by haraam, it will never benefit u. The pakis just don't get it. They got even the country by haram means. that's why it will not prosper.
aparaajita10 10 months ago
@afgpiece The truth is that Pakistan has nothing of its own. It's best musicians were from India. With the Taliban and fundamentalism taking over Pakistan, the remaining musicians will either flee Pakistan or they will be hang. Pakistan will soon become a ghost country and it deserves to be so. Pakistan and Pakistanis are the world's scums. They don't value culture and beauty. They are after destruction, hypocrisy and war-mongering. They will soon be destroyed.

zakir hussain has taken lessons from Ustad Thirakwa! Of course his main teacher was Allah Rakha Khan.
Idioteque66 3 years ago
"Ustad" is not his name, it is a kind of title given to great musicians and it actually indicates that he is a Muslim. "Pandit" would indicate Hindu. Like "Usted Allah Rakha" and "Pandit Ravi Shankar."
almostbetterthansile 3 years ago
honestly i have only heard one recording of mian Qadir Baksh...but I have heard tabla players play his composition..the skill level required to even comprehend them is veryyyy high..he was one of the best composers...and one of the best tabla players of all time....the diffrence in style is the main thing, its hard to compare...but in there own gharanas they both are the best....
theanhadnaad 3 years ago
TPUstad,
I am from Pakistan as well.
