my favourite part is when pat's so happy at what he's contributuing he's jumping up and down at 7.20, but listen to that, he has every right to be happy about that :)
...around 3:03 I had to stop what I did (.I just wanted to listen to "some Metheny" while working...haha) and stare at my monitor...Brad Mehldau, man!
one of the best line ups of the past 20 years in my opinion. i think that these guys best exemplify the true meaning of jazz music at its finest. they break their own comfort zones at every moment they can in order to learn more about themselves and the style they play. i wish there were more out there.
@jazzguitar1221 Oh, I'm sorry, God, I didn't realize I missed Sunday school. I hope you're a better musician than you are a comedian. Now, I shall stop here and deny you the satisfaction of a flame war.
Holy shit, I just started really getting into Brad Mehldau a few days ago, and listening to him is changing my perspective on how jazz piano should be played
oh wow they have a few albums, thats cool. Im just getting into metheny but i have been into jazz for a while but hes quickly turning into a major influence for me
It is the Brad Mehldau Trio with special guest Pat Metheny on guitar. They did a world tour together about a year and a half ago. I saw it and I can't stop wanting to see them again.
I absolutely LOVE the songs on this album. Unique collab between Metheny/Mehldau. The only thing that I noticed about this first track (the recorded version), is how the tempo speeds up drastically. Not that it's a big deal, but I listen to this in my earphones when I exercise (walking); and by the end of the tune, I am practically running! :0P
Mehldau has never been known to be a ripper like Metheny. They are both sick musicians in their own right. Mehldau has great melodies and never gets in the way and Metheny plays some sick nasty lines. They are a great combination together for this reason alone. Great group.
I agree with the living dream... mehldau has a very unique soloing style that uses a lot of dissonance and patterns that you don't hear out of other jazz pianists, especially older ones, most of the time. In an interview with Metheny, he said the first time someone gave him an album with Brad on it he actually had to pull over his car when he started soloing because he was so astounded. They're both excellent musicians.
Yes, I never said Mehldau wasn't a great musician. He is one and I definitely like him!! He has great melodies and he's a master but metheny expresses something more than just notes when he plays. It's magic... Hence my comment. Oh and by the way, I'm not relying on this clip to write my opinion. I have their album and I have seen them live here at Lisbon ;)
all over him and give him awards. We'd all joke about it ("Uh Larry...can we get something for you? Would you like to come for dinner tonight?",) and laugh, including Larry.
Here's the best part about him:
He was the nicest, sweetest guy on the planet. I don't mean,"I'm great and I know it and I'll be nice cuz it's the right thing." The guy was nice. Nicest guy...semi-quiet.
Ok...thank you for letting me gush. I'll shut up now. (I'm just so proud.)
I can't believe this. It just now occured to me to punch in a guy I went to highschool with, and there he was: Larry Grenadier...with Pat Methany. I am floored. (I knew he was playing w/Pat...saw in paper once. But seeing on YouTube?! Another trip.)
Had the honor/pleasure of playing with Larry in highschool jazz band for one year. (Him senior, me freshman.) Every practice was a treat. (He would play electric.) Yes we knew he was great. All the jazz edudacators would gush...
Pat Metheny never studied with Jim Hall. He did study briefly with Joe Diorio in Miami. Many of the tunes from his first album grew out of interval exercises by Diorio. I know because I studied with Joe myslef while at USC.
damn good tune...i never thought metheny and mehldau would work well when i first heard that they were going to record together...thought their ideas would conflict but it syncs real well
Here in Brazil when one wants to see strippers on stage he goes to any carnival dance halls. When you want to listen good MUSIC, you go to see guys like these playing live. Does anybody have a better idea?
Metheny is unbelievable, I read some of the responses on this page and I was rather shocked at some of the comments. Metheny is up there with the best of all time jazz players, his ability to think over changes is unreal, and has a sound that is unlike any other player.
dude, accomplished jazz players don't think over changes. they have already spent time internalizing all the musical knowledge through constant, constant, constant practice.
Yes guscaldas, it's really anoying to ear that left hand....it's really a shitty hand. I like much his right hand. As for Pat Metheny solos, you are also right, boring....I never understood why he is one of the best jazz guitarist and musician....it's really strange, so many people in history wrong....well...it happens.
I really like metheny's solo in this video. Yes, he does employ some of "old tricks" but he's got some really interesting stuff going on over these changes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Metheny-brilliant composer-as always. His improvisations are boring and repetitive. Alan Holdsworth and Jim Hall can do a much better job during the solos. Melhdau also brilliant, although I am very tired of his elusiveness and prodigious left hand
don't be silly! what you wrote is completely ridiculous. Jim Hall is a fantastic player. But of course you don't know him. I mean, you think you know, but big heads like you exist so then wrong ideas and stupid comments can exist too.
I'm going to have to disagree only on principle. Pat Metheny, though well-taught by Jim Hall, would no doubt be an incredible player no matter who he studied with. Who you study with is nothing if you're not willing to put in the work and dedication that it takes to become as much of a virtuoso as Pat is. That's what I'm thinking anyway.
I read a review of Metheny that said he has lost his creativity, he has no more tricks up his sleeve, so to speak. After listening to this very introspective CD, I beg to differ! And I think the collaboration with Mehldau is refreshing and really cool. I feel the 'blend' of their unique styles is almost as good as the Metheny/Jaco Pastorius collab. from the late 70's!
man who would say hes lost creativity? thats rediculous. the metheny mehldau combo is absolutely amazing. same with his work with michael brecker on pilgrimage.
I wish I could remember...basically the author highly praised this CD, and said the collab was refreshing and unique. Then he discussed how Metheny is getting older, more stale, losing his spark. The author was pleasantly surprised by this CD. Maybe I read it in Rhapsody??
Now I dont even understand that. Any rock musician can take three chords use them over and over and people love them (look at acdc) but when pat plays two solos that sound the same he is "loosing his creativity"? what is with that. Metheny is a brilliant musician, I am just happy to have lived at the same time as him and was fortunate enough to meet him.I will never get tired of listening to him
Hopefully that reviewer has changed his mind after hearing the new Pat Metheny Trio record as well. What a fantastic release from three amazing players. I love the energy that Antonio Sanchez has brought to Pat's playing, they have a great rapport together.
i am a huge fan of metheny, and i always will be. personally i like more his stuff with Lyle Mays, but this two have made their click to. i realy like this stuff!!!! tanks for posting
I'm trying to figure out the progression of this song, it sounds like the first two chords are D minor, followed by a G/C, but I'm not positive, anyone have a better idea than me? Thanks
My guess is Dadd9 no 3rd (but minor is implied in some parts of the melody and some of mehldau's voicings) then an Ami/C as the A note stays in the progression like a pedal tone.
It would be incredibly nice of u if you can post more of it, because its very hard to find that tour online... plus im sure youll make a lot of people happy, starting with myself. So if you want to spread the joy around, posting would be the right thing to do. Thanks a lot man for that vid and can't wait for whats coming next...

I'm trying to figure out the progression of this song, it sounds like the first two chords are D minor, followed by a G/C, but I'm not positive, anyone have a better idea than me? Thanks
panicwide2 4 years ago
My guess is Dadd9 no 3rd (but minor is implied in some parts of the melody and some of mehldau's voicings) then an Ami/C as the A note stays in the progression like a pedal tone.

mehldau doesnt know what chords are.

hum..; is that true?
maybe "knows but doesn't think about it"

It would be incredibly nice of u if you can post more of it, because its very hard to find that tour online... plus im sure youll make a lot of people happy, starting with myself.
