I started with a POD XTL, then saw the video for a variax and bought one even without playing it because I couldn't believe it could do all this. I have since upgraded to the POD X3, Variax Acoustic, and Variax 600. All I can say is that I don't even like playing my other guitars any more.
All the tones except the AC/DC sounded great. Too much fizz on the AC/DC one. I use a PODxt with a 45w Marshall model that sounds really close. Great demo of different styles here and love the tuning option...bit less pricey than Gibson's Robot guitar!
the ACDC song he played sound really digital man....where's the tone? i dont really like ACDC but that just didnt sound good....(no disrespect) your playing was awesome, but the tone was crap.
its weird to explain gut the guitar strings stay at the same pitch but the preset can make the strings change like a transpose button... but it f you turn down the amp, your still in whatever tuning you were before you plugged the gat in.
I own a pod XT Live. Great board. A good cabinet is essential to get most any effects pedals to sound great, as well the "ACDC" sound is off due to the guitar he is playing it on and the different cabinets. That's like asking a Ovation to sound like a Gibson J45. This board puts out great sound. I have found lots of effects and created custom effects on it that sound full and crunchy so keep trying out settings and you can get a great sound. Don't knock what you have not tried.
Notice how line 6 dosent advertise to sell the vettas anymore? Just a little leary of wanting to spend too much cash with line 6 if their gonna up and do away with products without any notice or explanation. I have a vetta 2 and have liked mine. Maybe Im missing something?
Ok it gets away with the transitions, but is it just me or does everything sound dull? Cmon ACDC? not exacly the real thing... I also think its very strange playing dropped Db tuning with the tension of standard tuning. It would confuse me.
But to change the tune of the guitar the variax don't interfer ??? the tune only change in the pod live ????? to make this demonstration of changue the tune is enought to got Pod X live ?
no, the tuning is changing in the variax. steve has setup his podxt so that when he changes patches, it 'tells' the variax to go to a different tuning. you couldn't do this with a podxt and a regular guitar.
It's got piezo pickups in the bridge, one for each string, they sense the pressure from the strings instead of the vibrations like normal pickups. This is very often used to create acoustic guitar tones, but in the Variax they also process different guitar sounds/tunings etc.
Hi, amazing sound!! where do you connect your pod to get that sound without phones??? I have tried my pod in different kind of amps but the sound is horrible in comparation with the phones :S what do you recomend me to buy? I have read that active monitors should work good...is that correct? Thanks! from Chile.
If you can connect via an effects loop or poweramp input you will get a more 'true' sound as your pod tone isnt being colored by the amps tone stack. Powered monitors are great for this. SpiderValve is awesome if you want some valve/bogner vibe.
Yes you can switch tunings without any Line 6 pedals. There are 60 positions to save guitars and tunings in the actual guitar using the MODEL SELECT KNOB and the 5 WAY SWITCH.
The pickup won't 'loose power' so to speak, it may need realigning in the future but these guitars are like any guitars - they require care and maintenance.
The only limitations I can think of are the guitars don't feedback easily (this is also a real positive!), you can't use any massive Floyd Rose tremolo systems because of the piezo pickup in the bridge.
You need to either use batteries, a power supply to power the guitar or an RJ45 cable directly into any Variax equip Line 6 device such as Vetta II or the XTL or X3L.
Man let's face it all this Line 6 stuff is starting to come pretty close. In like 10 more years, mondo amp rigs and giant pedal boards are probably just gonna be an obsolete liability. I know my rig which is relatively simple is starting to give me problems getting to some places. shoot I've even lost some far away gigs because it was easier to get some guy out there who sounded pretty much as good through a POD. might be time to look into one...
I think this is already happening. Pod tone is on so many hit records there is no separating. You can't hear something and say "POD". The lines are already blurred. The great thing about Line 6 is the valve amps coming out mixed with this extremely versatile DSP.
Bro! Please do not get me wrong! Your playing is excellent! You are obviously very gifted. I am simply saying that it takes a lot to properly simulate all of these tones. Line 6 is a great company on the cutting edge of this technology. However, it simply does not sound EXACTLY like the real thing. On the other hand if you are going for ease of use and don't want to lug tons of amps, pedals and guitars around, this is the way to go. Just my opinion. Did not mean to ruffle feathers. :)
Yes. But the tuning has to be saved into the guitar. You can have up to 60. Basically you can "call up" the guitar model/tuning you want within each preset on the XT Live.
The final signal is analog. Think of how the tone is shaped on a standard guitar with magnetic pickups . . . You move the Tone knob the tone changes . . . Variax guitars work on a similar principle. The "modeling" happens in that part of the signal chain so it's completely different to midi guitars of the past or synth guitars.
I just upgraded to the X3 Live from my trusty XT Live and HOLY FREAKING COW!!! Since I got the X3 I hardly touch my Roland VG-99 get up! Also when I go to lay bass the X3 got gorgeous bass amp models too... SERIOUSLY love it. What Steve did here is but a smidgen of what you can do in a live environment with just a variax and your x3 or even xt.
I love line 6 so much I am retiring my old Peavey Revolution stack that I replaced with a Spyder Valve 212.

I really dont like these amps... And i know the sound of them is great... But i really think, that the good sound from a guitar player doesnt come out of the amp, or the guitar, it comes out from hard work and practice, in my opinion these amps are for lazy people. But anyway the have a great sound
Hey GiankGuitar . . . Thanks for the input although all the guitars sound is coming from the XT Live (multi effects unit). I've never heard of guitar amps for 'lazy people' and at the end of the day it's all playing guitar whether it's by pressing the headstock up to a wall or playing through 4 quad boxes.
Yeah. But all these effects are coming from the guitarrist right? And, too, the thing for tuning, i think thats a bit lazy, cause we have some time to tune our guitar.
BTW, Stevic what is the song from Jeff Buckley he is playing there?
Your guitar still needs to be in perfect tune whilst doing all the tuning changes. So you tune your guitar as much as any regular guitar but are doing MORE by adding another element ontop of that . . . Coordinating alternate tunings via patches in the XTL or X3L whilst maintaining regular tuning on your Variax. The Buckley track is called GRACE.
Yeah you're right, it may come in handy, but it isnt bad to know how to tune your own guitar! Dont you think so? Well at the moment i havent even enough money to buy even a good damn amp. I'm 15 years old lol. Hope someday get one of those.
PS: Thanks for the name of the song, it did really sound sweet.
That's what I am saying, YOU DO need to tune these guitars just like normal. This isn't a trick guitar that tunes itself! Try a Variax 700 in a music store one day and you will know what I mean.
shit dude 15! sorry for being a prick. if i where you i would forget about tone and shit, there's only one way and it's no secret. every guitarist you ever worshiped sounded the way they did through max gain. no matter what you use you will have to push it to the red. a pod xt will do that, but you still need a powerfull amp to keep up with all it has to offer. i dont know many people who can work them but i make mine scream. a good axe is your main priority though.
again you miss the point, the tuning thing is for cover musicians. if youd played live youd know you need a different axe for each tuning. the intonation alone will suck big time with any regular 6 string if you go lower than d. b to b tuning requires a baritone guitar.
yes, true, variax are ok for a quik tuning change in a song, but is always better to use a ´real´ guitar, besides variax alternate tunings sound too artifitial
shit man, i just took my pod online for the first time! now where talking. nothing could be easier. i cant believe i have been setting the tones myself. it's important to understand you tone, but it's also a real bitch sometimes when dealing with all the extra stuff on there. now it all works perfect.
Yeah, it's funny the sound was recorded off the desk and I think there was a little funny business going on. Plus the YouTube compression doesn't do justice. And in saying that X3 Live into SpiderValve is a whole new ballpark!
and you did it incredibly accurate... absolutely excellent.. presets...and chips.... and programming..become MUSIC..and that's all that matters... you did it..:)
On your line 6 for the AC/DC part which selector did you have it on? Also is there a list somewhere of which artists sound like the equivalent selection on the line 6?
Sorry I don't know what you mean by selector? I think the best thing you can do is know what the artists you like use (gear wise) then program your Line 6 device with the equivalent models.
Great video!I wanna know if changing the tune is made with a POD xt effect. Whant's the name of the effect tha allow you to change the tune???(ex. from E tune to B tune)
The tuning is stored in the guitar (you can store up to 60 different guitars and tunings) then I am controlling which guitar/tuning I am changing via the XTL.
Im from Argentina, the X3L its not available here yet. I want to know if you think the prices of the XTL will drop too much when its bigger brother gets here. Thanks!
I can't predict what will happen in Argentina, but I don't think it will be a massive change. X3L is a more expensive unit, the difference between XTL and X3L will be up to the dealers in your country I imagine! Put it this way, XTL is still going to be made, so any value drop won't be a massive one.
Thanks for the answer, i have another question about prices (i WILL get a line6 but this is holding me back) How much more expensive the X3L is? Consider this, here the XTL is being sold at 790 dollars (dealers here are ripping us off)... so, the X3L will be about what? 900 dollars?
That sounds pretty acurate. I do all the clinics and product training in Australia but don't deal with any of the sales related stuff. $790 for an XTL isn't a bad price . . . My guess is X3L will be more like $1000 rrp $1300.
I use a pod XT for playing live, and i've run into several others that use them live for Giging. One individual ran his XT straight into the house system without an amp, this was at a rather large venue in Ohio (The Newport).
The secret with the XT, and i'm sure most multi-effects is spending enough time to fine tune it at the volume you play at live. It sounds different at higher volumes than it does low volumes...Thats why i just mic mine , sounds great!
cool stuff, but the picture overlays hide the most impressive bit; that its all in one take!
had to watch it a few times to realize that, maybe if you record another promo push the overlays to the side, or make them semi-transparent. nice work!
I've read countless comments about the Variax guitar being limited to genres outside the metal realm, this demonstration truly proves such remarks worthless. Nice mix of songs, deffinately convinced that I need to get a hold of a Variax 700.
Hey! I've never had a problem pulling great sounds live or in the studio with XTL. It's often a case of simply not knowing how to use the unit or having unrealistic expectations . . . For example someone playing a slightly dodgy electric guitar expects to plug in and sound like Clapton!
But in response to your question, The Vetta isn't mic'd . . . I'm using the direct outs on the back and the amp is set to BYPASS so what you are hearing is JUST PodXTL straight into the desk. The Vetta was just for onstage sound and being run as a poweramp. Cheers!
awesome i have 2 vaxs had them for a few years and they r great btw all the songs you picked r my favs of all time aside from ac/dc your song choises were so dead on it freaked me out great taste man
What else is changing in each patch (as mentioned) is GUITAR TYPE, PICKUPS, TUNING, FX, CABINETS, AMPS - all with Variax & PodXTLive. (Variax edited with WOrkBench)
If you guys know how to post up files on my YouTube page, let me know and I would be happy to put the Variax patches and XTLive patches I made for this demo.

Is that only with the live or is their a way to configure the normal POD x3 to do the same?

- can i switch to different tunings/sounds wif the guitar half way durring a performance without using any line6 pedals?
-will the piezo loose its picking up power in the future, coz i heard the some strings(e.g e) would not be picked up as strongly as others
-is there any limitations of a variax compared to a standard guitar?

shit man, i just took my pod online for the first time! now where talking. nothing could be easier. i cant believe i have been setting the tones myself. it's important to understand you tone, but it's also a real bitch sometimes when dealing with all the extra stuff on there. now it all works perfect.

bullshit! hard work is nescasery if you have shit equipment. anyone can play, its not hard.

it's bettere the pod xt live or pod x3 live?????????
EpicStorm1992 4 years ago
X3 Live! I am making the official tutorial DVD next month.
Stevic 4 years ago
what are the differences between xt live and x3 liv??
EpicStorm1992 4 years ago
nice sound good clip but the ac/dc setting must played with Gibson SG;)
deathcom32 4 years ago
Those sounds are all pretty neat, except for the AC/DC one.
Aside from that; kickass. Would like to get me a Variax someday. When I have more of that pesky money-stuff...
BarryDennen12 4 years ago
Yeah, it's funny the sound was recorded off the desk and I think there was a little funny business going on. Plus the YouTube compression doesn't do justice. And in saying that X3 Live into SpiderValve is a whole new ballpark!

too much low end...
cheath432 4 years ago
slipknot actually tunes to DROP b, not B standard, not that it matters for that riff... but anyways :P

On your line 6 for the AC/DC part which selector did you have it on? Also is there a list somewhere of which artists sound like the equivalent selection on the line 6?
niceday3 4 years ago
Sorry I don't know what you mean by selector? I think the best thing you can do is know what the artists you like use (gear wise) then program your Line 6 device with the equivalent models.
Stevic 4 years ago
Oh right, i mean like lester or spank etc
niceday3 4 years ago
Ahhh . . . I had it on the Lester (Les Paul). I know Angus used an SG . . . But I think it's pretty acurate.
Stevic 4 years ago
Wow the AC/DC part was damn nice.
How does he keep the rhythm going while soloing?

Great video!I wanna know if changing the tune is made with a POD xt effect. Whant's the name of the effect tha allow you to change the tune???(ex. from E tune to B tune)
marcobastoni 4 years ago
Hi there,
The tuning is stored in the guitar (you can store up to 60 different guitars and tunings) then I am controlling which guitar/tuning I am changing via the XTL.
Stevic 4 years ago
Ok but, can I change the guitar tuning via the XTL with a normal guitar (not a Variax)???
Can I tune my Ibanez in B only with the XTL??
(p.s.next saturday I'm gonna buy the X3 live)
marcobastoni 4 years ago
Nope, XTL or X3L won't allow you to change the tuning like I am doing in this video.

Im from Argentina, the X3L its not available here yet. I want to know if you think the prices of the XTL will drop too much when its bigger brother gets here. Thanks!
donbarredora 4 years ago
Hey!
I can't predict what will happen in Argentina, but I don't think it will be a massive change. X3L is a more expensive unit, the difference between XTL and X3L will be up to the dealers in your country I imagine! Put it this way, XTL is still going to be made, so any value drop won't be a massive one.
Stevic 4 years ago
Thanks for the answer, i have another question about prices (i WILL get a line6 but this is holding me back) How much more expensive the X3L is? Consider this, here the XTL is being sold at 790 dollars (dealers here are ripping us off)... so, the X3L will be about what? 900 dollars?
donbarredora 4 years ago
That sounds pretty acurate. I do all the clinics and product training in Australia but don't deal with any of the sales related stuff. $790 for an XTL isn't a bad price . . . My guess is X3L will be more like $1000 rrp $1300.
Stevic 4 years ago
asking you line6 podxt better or X3 ? any 1 help ?
3itachi3 4 years ago
I personally really like the X3L because of the added features and easier navigation. XTL is a great unit also. All depends on what you want to do!
Stevic 4 years ago
btw, whats the name of that meshuggah track? will have to buy the album its on...

It sounds different at higher volumes than it does low volumes...Thats why i just mic mine , sounds great!
mrstickball 4 years ago
cool stuff, but the picture overlays hide the most impressive bit; that its all in one take!
had to watch it a few times to realize that, maybe if you record another promo push the overlays to the side, or make them semi-transparent. nice work!

DEFTONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've read countless comments about the Variax guitar being limited to genres outside the metal realm, this demonstration truly proves such remarks worthless. Nice mix of songs, deffinately convinced that I need to get a hold of a Variax 700.
Soulpin 4 years ago
hey man, im looking to maybe get a podxtlive but ive been hearing in reviews of people having problems getting good sounds in live situations.
I notice you have a Vetta mic'd up there, was the xt through that or straight into the PA?
BumBiscuit0 4 years ago
Hey! I've never had a problem pulling great sounds live or in the studio with XTL. It's often a case of simply not knowing how to use the unit or having unrealistic expectations . . . For example someone playing a slightly dodgy electric guitar expects to plug in and sound like Clapton!
Stevic 4 years ago
But in response to your question, The Vetta isn't mic'd . . . I'm using the direct outs on the back and the amp is set to BYPASS so what you are hearing is JUST PodXTL straight into the desk. The Vetta was just for onstage sound and being run as a poweramp. Cheers!
Stevic 4 years ago
ahh nice one, thanks for the reply.
also wanna say good job on slipping some Buckley in your demo, he's awesome

No Meshuggah shirt?
DougFCKNSteele 4 years ago
Hey man!
I don't have a Meshuggah shirt! But if I did, I'd wear it. You should check out the new SpiderValve amps . . . You will want one.

This has been flagged as spam show
did you stop and tune for each song or does it do that auto??
junkyardw 4 years ago
The filming is continuous (no stopping) the tuning is changing with the patches. Line 6 Variax guitars do that!
Stevic 4 years ago
What else is changing in each patch (as mentioned) is GUITAR TYPE, PICKUPS, TUNING, FX, CABINETS, AMPS - all with Variax & PodXTLive. (Variax edited with WOrkBench)
Stevic 4 years ago
Very neat - will you post the configs for each set?
vinceasmith 4 years ago
Hey Vinceasmith . . . You mean the actual XT Live & Variax Patches? Can I do that on here? It's a good idea!
Stevic 4 years ago
that would be an excellent idea
OhSoInsane 4 years ago
If you guys know how to post up files on my YouTube page, let me know and I would be happy to put the Variax patches and XTLive patches I made for this demo.
Stevic 4 years ago
hmm i hvae never tried that but you could upload them on megaupload and post the links...
