Fantastic review, thanks! I'm seriously considering this pack to replace my aging Hillary backpack but I have a few questions that the staff at the store (MEC) couldn't answer. Are the waist strap removable? How close does this come to meeting the standard airline carry-on dimensions - could you get away with it as a carry-on?
the front mesh pocket on this backpack is so nice. I put my maps, 3 litres of water and a rain fly in here when I hike, and there is still room for more stuff. I love this pack! the only bad thing is I broke 2 of the buckles, maybe my fault though, but who cares, new buckles are cheap
What kind of Z55 is this? I just got one but notice a lot of differences already... most immediately noticeable are the dark color and different color scheme.
I have noticed that you do not like the mesh waist belt pockets on both the Gregory and Osprey packs, but it seems to me that if they had anything else, it would defeat the purpose of having the vent holes in the actual waist belt. They HAVE to be mesh in order to function in terms of that type of ventilation.
i definitely see your point though, as it would be a sweet spot for camera, etc.(i personally take a shock/waterproof camera - olympus 720sw - when heading into the backcountry)
my only problem is the lack of a sleeping bag compartment (and access) at the bottom. not a major issue, just something that is a good touch at times.
Thanks for the in-depth review. I purchased this bag online a few days ago after trying one in a local store. I'm excited to try it out on my next 4 day trip.
wow that fabric looks really, really thin to me..
I own a Condor 3-day Assault Pack (frameless) which is made of pretty good quality 1000d nylon. Is this fabric comparable?

would be very help full if you could stuff it and walk around, to see how it looks.
do you think this bag could be used for 3-4 day mountain bike or ski trip? i can't decide if i should get z45 or z55.

I have one. Mine is grey sides and accents and yellow colored center. It's labelled "M". I use it for two day hikes. I LOVE IT!

Can this pass as carry on luggage? How tall is it? 22"-23" is the typical carry on max height.

Yes !
A place for MP3 players, cameras and GPSs are a must in a modern bag.
And your are right, it would be better if pouches were water resilient if not water proof.
And a cord guide for headphone cable would be great.
