I would probably only buy this snare to use it as a side snare...I love playing thrash, but I don't like the sound of this snare unless I'm trying to practice a jazz beat
Ludwig is trying to copy a sound that Alex had with a solid rosewood Tama drum back awhile ago...I think they are close but Al started out with a supraphonic..just like Bonham. Thatswhere his sound came from. Well, that and some creative engineering.
I think it would be cooler if it didn't come in that wood finish and it came in that cool red, white, and black tape thing like on eddie van halen's guitar
i heard that alex only used rosewood snare drums in studio, specifically custom made for him by ludwig from back in 1980 up until the present..?..that rosewood tone on this snare is unmistakable when you hear any recording from van halen from 1980 to the last VH recording..superb !
It`s cool but for some reasons I can`t always get the sound I want from it, right now I have an Emperor on and it is ok. Any tips? (The emperor x is a bit too muddy for me).
I took the 42 strand from the Alex van H and put on my BB- and put the standard strands from the BB on the Alex van H- really liked the change! At least for now.
They should at least make 1000 of them cause fer sure i really want one. But i'll to wait til early next year. : ( We outta petition for it lettin Ludwig know.
Good luck on attempting to purchase one of these, they are all sold out! I can't find any store that still has one. Feel free to look at my comments above yours on this page. I am furious myself that I can't obtain one.
Great sounding snare...But, what people don't realize is that "Rim Shot" plays so much in the sound of Alex Van Halen's and John Bohnan's snare sound....That's what u/r are doing here...And that's the key to both of their snare sounds....Both rock very hard!
Amazing snare Drums. Go to memphisdrumshop they are a wonderfull shop. Just got this one today... Awesome Thanx memphis drumshop You rocks dude. that's the Kwijibo snare drum now OhYeaaaaaaaah!!!
God i want this snare so bad. And here right now i'm in the middle process of getting another snare that's around 1,000 too. Alex was the reason i got into drums in the first place and i never thought he'd ever come out with this. DAMMIT! Plus i hear that there's only 100 of these made too!
Holy crap, that sounded better than I thought that it would!!! lso hats off to the drummer who did the demonstration!!! I enjoyed listening to you as well as the snare!
A beautiful snare! It sounds pretty damn close to AVH's brown sound. A bit of Bonham too. I always thought that the warmth of a wooden snare is how you'll get Al's sound, but he uses chrome snares too and still manages to get that sound. You came pretty close even without any duct tape. Great sounding snare. I don't see it listed on your web site. What's the price?
Gorgeous big fat sound

The fact that Ringo Starr, John Bonham, and Alex Van Halen all used Ludwig says something about the company. Great drums.

@drummerjoe78 may be expensive but get a ludwig supraphonic 14 by 6.5 snare drum and tune it like john bonham

Why in the hell did they only make a 100? Thats one of the best sounding signature snares I've heard!

How did you get the drum tuned to sound like that? How tensioned up is the Ludwig P-86 Millennium Strainer on it?

There are MILLIONS of drum sounds, but you can identify which one belongs to Alex Van Halen. He's had that sound ever since "Diver Down."

LOVE that snare and it's chocky pop with it's awesome echo! Insane. If I were a drummer I'd have to get me one.

imagine how awesome it would sound if you tightened up the snares and the head
ooooooh that would sound orgasm

Do you know how those drums are covered? It looks like stain and a satin finish.

They made 100 of them. The problem is that I can find ebony snare shells, but in only 1 piece not 15 layers.

@SjoesWyberovka 100 were made.

is there an advantage of having 42 strand snares?
guitarshredda2 2 years ago 4
Not really an advantage, but you do get more of the snare sound.
memphisdrumshop 2 years ago 2
@memphisdrumshop dont you also get more snare buzz with bigger snare strands.
PearLDrummeR1871 1 year ago
@guitarshredda2 less snare strand the less buzz out of toms and more tone in your snare . a 16 or a 14 is the best
colinhammond2k7 1 year ago
@guitarshredda2 if u like a drier & fat sound go with the 42 strand snares
