If the break got too big of a time gap, then Horner flatted or crashed, Hesjedal would have vaulted past Horner and Leiphiemer into 3rd. It's also possible Popovych was trying to soften Rogers and Zabriskie so Levi could attack them and claim the top spot. The top 5 riders were all within 70 seconds in the final standings.
Great timing by Hesjedal! Quite an exciting race. As usual Hincapie was way too passive. When is he going to take more control and attack or at least try something. He seems to always wait and watch others take initiative. Don't get me wrong... I cheer for the dude and hope he will one day finally win a classic. But it is quite frustrating seeing him be so passive!
