  • Dimbleby. What a babe.

  • I love that they use Rick Wakemans Arthur theme for this, so fitting.

  • <3 Paxman's sweet and slightly sardonic tone =)

  • will we have the same theme tune this year?

  • I'm gutted they are changing the theme tune at the start. It has been a key part of BBC coverage since 1979. The new tune is bland and boring - we need to bring this one back!!!

  • The BBC hates the conservative party HATES HATES HATES

  • @maltloaf6000 Of course they do, the BBC is full of left wing extremist revolutioneries just like the Labour party.

  • @aeronuk1

It would probably help your cause if you could spell simple words such as REVOLUTIONARIES correctly. I realise that this is a novel concept for you, but if you can't at least do that, you shouldn't expect many people to take your petty little bigotries and your paranoid delusions seriously.

  • @dartaddict Thanks but I won't be lectured by someone who watches the simpsons and family guy lol

  • we need Part 1 of election 05

  • we need a full episodes of election 05

  • @knightvox compared to canada your election music is amazing

  • @knightvox

It's been the same tune for 31 years!

  • @pigeonshouse do you think theyll change i hope NOT

  • No excitement here ; Howard was quickly trounced !

  • @knightvox you're in luck, apparently they are changing it

  • What do you mean, it's been the same tune since 1979.

  • Noooo it's a classic!!! They should funk it up ha ha

  • How on God's earth jpr did the evil Prince of Darkness think he was going to be PM ? Ha ha

  • Does anyone know if there is a video of the BBC exit poll results for 2005?

  • im hoping tories 50+ majority. lib dems opposition with labour defections & labour ruined to less than 50 seats. i can dream!

  • How wrong did that look - the BBC logo against the image of Big Ben... LOL!

  • King Arthur , hahahaha!

  • I don't why they're making out the 05 election is great it was pretty boring the same for the 01 election as well, the 2010 election will be good though

  • Every election is exciting just some are more exciting than others. There's no way that 2010 can be boring.

  • 2010 will be good lets see if jacqui smith and alan duncan lose there seats

  • 2010's going to be brilliant. I can't wait.

  • @Xithinar Yeah it's going to be the same as 1997 - except Labour wiped out not the Tories!

  • True @ mellowNdark

I suspect it wont be as bad for Labour as it was for the Conservatives in 1997.

It is just a pity everyone who THINKS "Dave" Cameron is going to wave his magic wand and everything is going tio be sweet is sadly going to be upset.

    I PREDICT CONS..350 Seats LAB 215 Seats

This prediction wont be a million miles away... Just watch

Labour will be back... History ALWAYS repeats itself .. Dont know how many terms in office the Conservatives will get?? Hard to say!!

  • Andrew Marr attempting to build tension is embarassing.

  • We need Blair back

  • god no...we don't deserve that!

  • Having watched all the bbc election night introductions back to 1979, I'm really impressed that they've kept the continuity of the same theme tune!

  • What can you say? It's an awesome tune.

  • When oh when will we be shot of this toxic, evil Labour government!!

  • When you replace it with an even more toxic and right-wing Tory government.

  • What is this name of this music and who composed it?? I would l ike to buy the entire theme on my i pod as i work out. pls help????

  • It's "Arthur" by Rick Wakeman.

  • What is the song called in the open of the BBC broadcast with the view of London Called?

  • Its from Arthur by Rick Wakeman

  • What a pity we in England were lumbered with yet another Labour government in 2005 even though the Conservatives won the popular vote in England, and under the leadership of Michael Howard of all people!

  • The clips ends great, "secure in the knowledge that by the time the sun rises tomorrow morning...they may not have a job."

  • Does anyone have the full episode?

  • I thought in 2005 Labour would get cut down to 10-20 seat Majority. However in 2009/2010 the Tories will have a BIG mandate and Majority of 75

  • Why don't you liek Labour? They are the same as your Republican Party. Both a bunch of war mongering idiots.

  • The Conservatives are closer in line to the US Republican Party than Labour.

  • Maybe overall, but Blair would have been a Republican, mainly because he bent over to Bush too often.

  • Blair was leader of the LABOUR PARTY! Labour are more in line with the democrats, for example on the big government issue. The TORIES are more in line with the GOP, unfortunately it doesn't always feel like that with that idiot Cameron in charge.

  • Bush wasn't exactly a small government President. Blair was a right wing Capitalist compared to a lot of previous Labour leaders.

  • See I don't think you can compare British and American Party's. America has never had a huge political Labour movement so both the main American parties are right of centre. I'm a Conservative (UK) but v socially liberal so like a Rockafella Republican but I can' t get over the Republicans fascination with religion and guns soo I'm a Tory Democrat and the majority of the Conservative party now would prob be the same

  • After the 1964 elections when the GOP was smoked by LBJ, the Republicans started a shift from the Rockafeller GOP and towards Goldwater GOP with the heavy focus on the South (the Democrats in 1964 were actually majority conservative Democrats from the South), by 1976 the march was on to turn the South into a GOP fortress...which it has been since 1994.

  • Funny how both the southern USA and the southern UK are the most conservative areas of the country!

  • Well, we did more or less spin off of the UK by declaring independence, no? So there's bound to be some similarities... even if they are 200 years in the making! :D lol (wasn't being too serious here)

  • that is true.....its better because those sections of the nations are the only place that the economy is growing!

  • There is some truth in that! Together we can keep socialism out

  • The econmy grows best in the UK maninly becuase that is where they capital and the most big buisness is, i am just pointing something out here i am not trying to be smart or anything.

  • And back here across the pond your GOP will be stuck in the wilderness for years! 2010 and 2012 are only going to suck worse for the Repub Party.

  • that is true...but that is ok we will rebuild the party and it will take time to return to power

  • Comment removed

  • i sincerely wish you luck

  • yea tell me about it, my party right now looks like the Tories in 1998...its our time in the sin bin, but one day we will roar back to power

  • A sad day in British politics. The general public showed their stupidity by voting for more socialism.

  • Labour are not Socialists.

  • They used to be.

  • Does anyone have the 2005 exit poll?

  • There is a video on Youtube from the start of ITV's '05 election programme which has the exit poll. ITV and the BBC held a joint exit poll that year and it predicted a Labour majority of 66 - exactly what happened.

  • i love the election nite theme thanx for uploading these '79 was my fav.

  • Has anyone got the extended version of this video complete with exit poll?

  • If anyone knows of a full version of the 2005 election I would be interested in this too.

  • Yh same, this is one of my favourite elections, it would great if we could have the whole programme on here, the excitment of every seat coming in is just classic ;).

  • Next time we hear this hopefully it will be a Tory victory and an end to this terrible Labour Government!

  • Too true. Only about 18 months to go until that wonderful day when Labour get kicked out!

  • dream on

  • I dunno, I worry either the people will be stupid enough to vote Labour or the BNP might break through. It ain't going to be an easy ride.

  • Brown's stupidity might cause a Lib Dem government.

  • Not while they keep bloody infighting like they're the Tories circa 1995.

  • Yes, I guess Labour had decided to throw Rick's tune in the bin, because every time it was used the Tories would win... much of Rick's delight, he's a Tory.

Now they brought it back look at what happened in Glasgow's East End...

Rick, please stop it! I love you, but please let's put an end to it!

  • Erm....1997?

  • Aye, that's the actual exception to the rule, so I guess it was Rick himself who decided to deny any access to his music after Blair's storming victory! C'mon let's have a larf about it!

  • Not too sure about this arrangement of "Arthur" though...

I watched the whole show along with an American political science student, needless to say she was VERY impressed with the BBC coverage (and the process in general, come to that)

  • They should have played "Arthur" during the opening of their United States election coverage.

  • Absolutely - I'd have been all for it.

  • But "Arthur" is specific to UK mythology and about ruling England. It wouldn't really make sense for the US.

  • Bloidy good opening music.

  • Nowhere near as good as the 1992 arrangement, my favourite version of the BBC Election theme, first used in 1979!!!

  • anybody know where i can download the bbc election theme by Rick Wakeman?

    want it as my ringtone

sheer class - makes the hairs on my neck stand up!!

  • the closest you can get is the Rick Wakemans Arthur. I havent been able to get ahold of Rick Wakemans Election 97 :(

  • someone has put election 97 theme up

  • @endlessraining It's on Napster!

  • @millers25 Napster : Election 97 Arthur - Rick Wakeman

  • must be the theme for the next election. Love it

  • I hope it is!

    It wasnt in 2001 :(

  • To quote Steve Bell just after 1997 - WHY IS IT ALL RED?!
