CERN will never operate as intended. The project is over, in terms of results, but is still alive in the minds of many participants. CERN was permanently disabled when a secret sabotage was discovered. CERN would have caused a global disaster if the sabotage had succeeded. It is safe to work on but it is over. None of the staff realize the project is over. This has nothing to do with the recent sabotage item, in the news. What is hidden will be revealed and we will all get it eventually.
Atlas is probably the most beautiful contraption I have ever seen. Although I have nothing to do with the world of theorectical physics (apart from being constructed from particles of course) I would like to state that I'm happy for my tax money to be spent on such a wonderful project.
To be fair to the CERN folk. it was only the magnets (used to bend the beam in a circle) that were at full power. There weren't any particle beams circulating in the machine when the accident took place. They had tested almost all of the 1232 magnets when one broke... It's amazing how much mess liquid helium can make when it start boiling and can't get out of the pressure-release valve fast enough... It should start up again in November. Good luck to everyone involved!

Are you going to get to drive a Mercedes in the Swiss/French alps the way Dr.Michio Kaku does?

When they fist announced that the first run would be at full throttle I thought
"Full power at first run? They must be confident like hell in this machine. "
Next thing they wrecked it.
And now they are wrecking my nerves by taking it ever so sloowwly...
But I still wish I was there at CERN..
