Have you thought about discharging the electrolyte, which is the part that keeps giving you a bit of a chock :) You can short circuit it with a resistor in between.

I've been toasted a couple of times and it hurts like hell :(

Its the electrolyte that saves power for the flash, thats the one you need to discharge, when you have done that, you wont have any problems.
