I just heard about a system called "Tru-Brix" where you can replace your siding using real brick. I'm not sure what their web address is but you get a 50-year warranty with it.
After 30 years in the construction industry I will always recommend fiber cement siding in lieu of vinyl siding. There is really no comparison here. Fiber cement is rot resistant, fire resistant and will add value to your home. It holds paint very well so painting is really not much of an issue. You will repaint due to fassion/color changes before the need for painting. Vinyl an inferior product and should not be used unless absolutely necessary, IMHO.
