Now THAT is a race! This is absolutely incredible, and a perfectly strategic performance from both Greg Anderson and Brendan Matthias. What an inspiration! Now if I could only break my PB of 11:02...
Greg was 1 grade ahead of me and I owe the inspiration to remain active to him to this day actually. I had such a HUUUUGE crush on him in high school but never acted upon it - not me to do so. His strides weren't just "running", he made it an absolute "art" form and the crowd always just grew silent upon watching him as he rounded the last laps. Sure would be nice to hear from him again, he was never vain and THAT was something in High School. I knew he'd succeed at anything he'd do, JStephF
That was my last high school race. Thanks for uploading this. Never did findout my exact time or finish in this but think somewhere around 10th in 8:53 according to a friend.
Thanks for the link. Yes, I remember this race. I was officiating the throws and was on the far side of the track. I can hear Bob Hancock giving the PA announcements at the meet. I was on the far side and remember the interest the crowd had in this great race. Reminds me of a great 1500m that was held at OFSAA at Etobicoke Centennial between two top high schoolers that kept changing the lead until one of them edged out a win at the line.
The first 1500m was solid! the last 1500m was sick!!!! I believe Greg ran his last 800m in 1:55... I placed second that day in the jr boys 800 in 1:55.
I would rank this as the greatest High school effort at any Championship!
An unbelievable race. I was amazed when I heard about it the day it happened and was sorry that I didn't attend the meet to witness this amazing feat. Thanks for posting it.
