As a leader the Shah had made some bad decisions. He gave orders to release all political prisoners. He was also under the fist of his sponsors, the US and UK. The Shah was a typical monarch really, sat back in his palace being friends with the west because it benifited him and his croneys, while most of the country lived in poverty and squalor, oppressed by the brutal police regieme.

You are telling me to take the word of Anwar Sadat above that of balenced historians. Despite asking again and again no one has given me a shred of logical reason or proof as to Western involvement in the Iranian revolution, all I have heard is people saying "Its an evil conspiricy"-sorry I dont buy that, none of the academic books I have seen on the subject have suggested western involvement.

looking at the evidence you give it seems clear that the British & Americans put pressure on the Shah, I knew about the attacks by Carter on the Human rights record etc. But doesnt it seem more likley that these were genuine attempts to increace human rights? Monarchy never stopped the democracy in Iran. The British backed Mullahs, the Tudeh Russian agents were not part of democracy. Fereydoon Hoveyda a critic of the Shah as well as Iran's UN Ambassador, said: The Shah one year before the revolution has commisioned him to orginize the UN observer team to come as Iran was to ready for such ellection. Which word of my own did I ignore? Mosadegh was a bully & undemocratic, Tell me why his best palls in Majlis Maki Baghayi Sadighi Faramarzi & Kashani turned against him? Any time he could not get his way in Majlis, Mosadegh threatened to disolve Majlis. The Shah as his constitutional right at time of national crisis had the right to disolve parliament. Mosadegh broke the law by disobaying the Kings decree & staging a coup by bringing the troops out on the eve of August 15, 1953.

After the referendum in Bahrain, Iran still was not accepting it. Both Majles & Senate were pressured to recognize the Bahraini's referendum. It was the Iranianian Parliment under the UN presure accepted the result. The Shah was the last person to agree with this. But what about kicking the British ass from the 3 Islands? Farazfloyd, Kheili Kosskeshi. Bahrain was part of Iran only in name. Well before the Brits occupied it, it was occupied by Potuhual. The Shah fought hard to regain the 3 islands. The Brits did not like it. In 1970, by the Brits Presure UN insisted on vote amongst Bahraini's for independent. Shah wasnot giving in but assured by government that Bahraini's will stay as party of Iran agreed with referendum. The Brits spent money while intimidating the heads of the Bahrain island.

Two unsuccessful assassination attempts on his life. On February 4, 1949, a Tudeh party member shot at him 5 times at 10 foot range was killed on the spot by his guards & on April 10, 1965 by a soldier who was shot & killed trying to make his way through the Marble palace.

As a leader the Shah had made some bad decisions. He gave orders to release all political prisoners. He ordered his military & Savak to take little or no action when action was needed to keep him in power. If your going to be a king (a dictator) act like one. Get tough! He was also under the fist of his sponsors, the US and UK. Although he tried to have more independence, he entrusted in the West too much, who ultimately removed him due to his wanting what Mossadegh wanted - more energy independence (amongst other things). Read the Shah's memoirs, "Answer to History".

The Shah was a typical monarch really, sat back in his palace being friends with the west because it benifited him and his croneys, while most of the country lived in poverty and squalor, oppressed by the brutal police regieme.
The Ayatollahs (Kohmieni etc.) are basically Religious Kings, ultra-conservative and violently enforce morals, though the people DO live in comfortable, dignified conditions after the revolution.
Its hard to know which are worse, probably the Shah.

My Iranian uncle, a poor child at th time of revolution, was given oppurtunities that wern't available frm the Shah's and is now medically qualified + works in Britian. Proved because he is the youngest of his siblings only one with a post-revolution education, all 8 others are labours and mothers, with greatest respect to them.

Well with all due respect one persons experience of the regime is hardly conclusive proof that it was good. From the accounts I have read SAVAK was a brutal state force that crushed political opposition. Democracy was a sham and political parties were virtually outlawed, why else did the people revolt & lynch SAVAK officers, you cant ignore that he was deposed by popular revolt. As for being a thorn in our eyes, we put him there, he gave us & the US huge oil consessions-he certainly wasnt.

There has been massive number of books written by the Iranians involved in the situation including the eye withness account of the people involved.These books were never publisized in your press.Sadat was very much involved & had to deal with Carter at first hand on the Shah.Even President D'staing of France has disclosed detailes on his book. looking at the evidence you give it seems clear that the British & Americans put pressure on the Shah, I knew about the attacks by Carter on the Human rights record etc. But doesnt it seem more likley that these were genuine attempts to increace human rights? Simple attempts to blackmail the existing regime into selling more oil. It seems to me altogether more likley that attepts to make the Shah reform into a more liberal democratic regime (which is something the US likes doing, from Iraq in 2003 to Mexico in 1912, its what they do) went wrong and resulted in Khomeini coming to power. BP pressuring the Shah for more oil rights is a perfectly commercial apolitical thing to do.

I told him that it is high time to break trhis taboo on the Khomeini revolution & unvail the secrets of this conspiracy. He said to me that because both the Republicans & the Democrats were involved in this mess, no one in eithe side is willing to talk about it. He said the same will apply for Brits who planed it in the first place. So would you not be surprised as why not 1 article is yet published on this?

I am always suspicious of accounts that arnt published because whilst there are of course leftists etc who would be apologists for Khomeini there would always be neutral mainstream people willing to publish the truth. In the UK the Islamic regime is hated by many, what better way for anti establishment types to attack the establishment than to publish the allegations you make. Yet few have done so.

dbww, If you are familiar with diclasifying files after 30 years, you than will underestand why certain truth do not come out for years. In many cases certain information remain as classified for up to 50 years. On the top of that the British double standard when dealing with the Shah & the Mullahs.
