Interesting how the Japanese are villians because of their move on the US at Pearl Harbor but the British are praised for their attack on the Italian Ships at Taranto ? I guess history is indeed written to serve the victors. What a sham ! Us and UK are both the worst.
@derloon Italy signed their pact with Nazi Germany on 22 May 1939. However, they did not declare war on Britain and France until 10 June 1940, the attack on Taranto was on 11 November 1940. Britain and Italy were at war when this attack happened, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor occurred when Japan and USA were not at war. There was a difference in the two attacks... but I guess your lack of research before your comment leaves you blind to that fact.

The Italian Fleet got the revenge on Alessandria of Egupt and Gibraltar, sinking enormous number of warship. But this is uncomfortable to be produced by History Channel.
search on archive of your royal navy for records about tons sinked in WWII in Meditrranean sea anche check who lost more ships. You! with HELP OF american, new zealand, australia, indian, canadians, greek and others help. Still talking?
@attopaca They weren't sunk by the Italian Navy. It was mostly against German aircraft, with the Pedestal convoy and the Battle of Crete amounting for many. And don't forget: for ships to be sunk in action they have to be in action. The royal Navy put its ships in harm's way. Did the Italian Navy put its ships in harm's way after Taranto?
@attopaca It's also not true. They disabled the Valiant. After Taranto the Italian Navy did the sensible thing and stayed in port. Remember, they had also taken a real pasting at the Battle of Cape Matapan. That taught them for putting themselves in Warspite's way!
Not true you say... Strange because in any case Valiant and Queen Elizabeth where long in Alessandria, doing nothing on harbour. About Matapan it is not been even a battle. I do respect every one as long every one goes right with history. And I don't think I'm wrong.
noblepuker the British created virtually every great naval innovation, HMS Dreadnought for example, The first carriers. And British ships had copper hulls before the USA was even a nation.
@2bn442RCT and they where also the first to operate in darkness and in all weather conditions.
However, i wouldn't underestimate the americans. They showed a lot of grit and determination in the first stages of the war, and their valour went a long way to compensate for their lack of ability in the first part of the war, and in the later parts of the war the USN was as good as anyone, and had an urivaled "blue water capacity" - the royal navy needed help from the USN to resupply in the pacific
@higfny We have to admit that the Americans and the Japaneses had better naval aircraft. The Swordfish only did so well becuase there was nothing to challenge it. And you wouldn't have wanted to attack Taranto in daylight in a Stringbag.
@TowerHamletsNeil Well said Sir! sonar (asdic), steam turbines, gas turbines, sea harriers and ski-jumps and not least amroured flight decks, to name some more. Quote, American Admiral (Halsey?) "If a kamikaze hits one of our carriers it 6 months in Pearl [Harbor]. If it hits a Limey carrier its 'all hands to the brooms'."
@TowerHamletsNeil yes,the british had copper hulls, but only below the waterline.Yes,all amercan inventions were of immigrant origin...but they DID live here, and called themselves 'americans'.The brits were the most powerfull navy no doubt...the world watched them closely for ideas. Thanks for the radar, and jet technology !...and no people, jets weren't german, they were designed in britian.
Actually the german jet was developed independently from the British, although the British was first.
The first jet engine was actually designed by the Romanian Henri Coanda in 1910,with his aircraft the Coanda-1910. It flew and the propulson method was exactly the same as later jets. The difference was that Coanda's jet used a piston engine to power the fans, this is a so-called "Thermo-Jet".Those have low efficiency so until the turbojet...
TowerHamletsNeil - america invented the sub,and ironclad ships with revolving turrets, and were the first to use them. The British did have the carrier.I'm not a big mouthed yank.I have great respect for the royal navy and what they've taught us.
@McLarenMercedes Was the dutchmans sub the 'turtle'? ..a one man sub designed and tested here?.I believe you...i'm guessing this dutch inventor lived in the usa.Yes,it was a swedish inventor on the monitor, but he was an 'american',so i stand by the statement.Didn't know the french had an ironclad? why does the world give credit to civil war usa? The french had the 1st sloped armored tank, yet few know it...u may be right.ALL americans were immigrants,in that sense, americans invented NOTHING,lol.
@McLarenMercedes I looked this stuff up,and your right.France had the first ironclad, and britian was developing one too.USS 'monitor' was just the first one to be tested in combat, same with the sub. This is why the credit the usa....i was only half right.
Check out the Union Army submarine the USS Alligator.I think it was more than twice as large as the Confederate sub the Hunley (that was the first sub to successfully sink a ship).Sadly the Alligator never saw action during the war, and she sank while being towed in bad weather. The wreck hasn't been found yet.
What was the nationality of Nikola Tesla anyway? He invented most of his things in the USA, but he was an ethnic Serb, born in the Austrian Empire (in present day Croatia).
@Eurofighter19 Pretty much American propaganda, Most HC docs are geared for excitement rather than education. There's no real comparison between programming on PBS and the HC. The MC is better but they have their problems too.
Taking apart the veteran's personal accounts which are valuable and worth listening, I absolutely agree with you; those documentaries are more propaganda than anything
I specially got to despise the heavy-metal music theme -totally inappropriate for WWII documentaries- they frequently used and the marine and soldier commentators acting as cheerleaders
You can tell how the HC documentaries are being "sexed up" in order to appeal to a wider audience that does not appreciate classic documentaries.
PBS documentaries on the other hand, as you rightly pointed out, are superbly done, unbiased, impartial and very informative; the kind of documentaries that frequently make me buy video cassettes so I can record most of them.
About the MC, I really can't comments about those documentaries and that channel since I have never watched one because of my limited budget.
It would be interesting to analyze their programming.

Nope. The Dutch inventor Drebbel is credited with the creation of the first submarine in 1620. Several reliable records exists of it.
Hm, last time I checked the ironclad with revolving turrets, The Monitor, was designed by a Swedish engineer called John Ericsson.
The first Ironclad battleship was the French La Gloire in 1859.
So, better catch up on your history. Drebbel's submarine did work in 1620.
Feel free too Google (or at least check Wikipedia) for these facts.
