  • Was looking for presentation on Rand for class...there's this with bad audio and some interviews with a guy sucking sweets. Pity, really, given his fame. Strange irony that such a noted designer should be here with poor quality repro!

  • I love and respect Paul Rand and his work, but when he says Rockwell has "no form" he's dead wrong. The formal composition of some of Rockwells compositions are as sophisticated as the old masters. Rand has a point though, if he means that in Rockwell's painting the content dominates. Rand is a little bit jealous because he couldn't render and manner as well as Rockwell.

  • The video quality feels like its from the 80s not the 90s

  • Ok.

  • Rand was a star!!

  • Language of Art

"order, unity, variety, contrast, symmetry, asymmetry, rhythm, harmony, dissonance, rhyme, interval, regularity, coherence, tension, balance, proportion, scale, weight, texture, line, mass, space shape, light, shade, and color...and many others, I can't think of at the moment."

    Spoken like a true master.

  • exactly.

  • One of my fondest experience as a design student, was to shake Mr. Rand's hand after his lecture in Indianapolis in the early 90's.

  • Wtf this guy is a genius

  • Rand is wrong to dis Rockwell. I used to feel the same, but I now think it's elite to talk like that. Illustration is different than graphic design, that's why they're titled different. They do have a lot in common at the same time.

  • yes i agree although i still admire rand

  • Rockwell is boring. Thats why I got into graphic design.

But is graphic design art? I dont think it could be questioned if art is design? I think they are separate. Unless you sign your graphic design.

  • Gazam:

"Boring" is a subjective judgement, so thanks for your opinion.I believe it can objectively state that Rockwell is a great renderer, and has uncanny skill at capturing human emotion. I also observe that successful art (in the Western perspective) is doing work that is chiefly for ones self that contributes to the leading edge of the continually evolving tradition of Western art history. All other forms are commercial applied arts that use art tenets. Of course there's a blurry area.

  • Okay - here's some more subjective judgements - everytime I see a Rockwell painting, I cant help that its so...so insincere...showing us too staged a family scene...or over extending necks of nosiness...or a back arching Santa Claus. The perfect Western scene.

  • Gazam:

YOU can't help seeing that it's so insincere". We're living in post-sincere time, where everything is cynical and tongue in cheek, so when we see something from another, much earlier time we can't relate to the sentiment.I'm sure Rockwell was very sincere. He did "stage"(or compose)his paintings, but so did all painters from the Renaissance to the French Impres-sionists. His work may look "corny","cliche", or even "sacchrine" by today's eyes. But that's just a sad statement on our culture.

  • I agree.

On another note... I find it humorous how the average business is constantly reinventing themselves. Logos and all. Trying to front as if "To cool to care" but really terrified of being left behind and no real clarity on what they are (as a company). This probably doesn't even make sense... but I was so bewildered when I saw the New Ups logo.

Why would you get rid of an amazing logo of a parcel and replace it with a sheild?

  • Hobodivine(by the way great moniker, can I steal it?)

The thing about the new UPS logo is that it's nothing but special lighting effect. How does it translate to black and white reproduction? There's nothing unique about otherwise.

I heard a story that Rand was asked to take the string tie off the logo because UPS doesn't allow string ties. Rand's reply was that it was an integral part of the design and that they wouldn't let him keep it he'd walk!

  • no doubt the best graphic designer in the world.

  • This guy is a genius.

  • True, his work is simple, but it's not about production times, it's about the idea. And if his words were "easily devised through ones own cognitive ability", why has no one else written or commented on design and art this way? I have to disagree, but everyone's a designer with an opinion these days.

  • The title is "Conversations with Paul Rand" and runs about 30 minutes. It's a full interview with him in his home and at school with students. Very awesome video.

  • "...soon to be released on DVD."

What is the DVD called? Is the DVD all about Paul Rand?

I'm guessing the video is much longer?
