Its amazing how many people are on here complaining that it's no longer around. Got any clue as to just how much money it costs to run a park like this? Eastern Creek isn't exactly a tourist hot spot, and the rides were dying. I can't name a single ride that was torn down and rebuilt elsewhere without a lot of money going into a big overhaul.
Things cost money to run. If you "fans" loved it so much, why weren't you there every weekend to keep the place going?
@kenobiplaysthebanjo Um well actually it was really successful but after it was sold to an Indonesian he jacked up the price and lost heaps of business, didn't fix the rides and then sold the land, it has nothing to do with the expenses of running it .
Wonderland was a very profitiable them park, but through mismanagent and greed we lost it.
@swiftwren If something is "really sucessful" you don't sell it off for no real reason. The investors in the park lost faith over a re-zoning initiative that the local council wouldn't approve (even though Wonderland owners owned the land). They made no money on it and the park started losing business.
Because of this, it was sold to a Malaysian company who let it die. There is still no confirmation if it was because they mismanaged the park or wanted the land for something else and let it die.
From memory this ad is actually from the late 80's....I distinctly recall thinking that 'little' boy was much older than me back then, nice mullet. Far out to think that was over 20 years ago, I must be getting old!
My Dad took me here for my 9th birthday back in the 80s. Just him and I. It remains as one of my most cherished memories.
The first ride I went on was Boo Boo's Balloon Race and when I tried the Beastie I almost had a heart attack! My favourite ride back then was the chairs (was it called "The Dragon's Flight" or something?) in Medieval Fair.
This ad is from the time I went to Wonderland with my family. It would be wonderful if we still had Wonderland. I remember meeting my favourate cartoon characters and I got a Yogi bear plush. It's very sad that I can never go back :(
It closed because of a greedy overseas company I believe run by Asians . The NSW government wouldn't allow this company to sell the land or build a commercial/industrial precinct on this site. They literally ran the park into the ground so they could show a loss. The government finally allowed them to sell the land and boy did they make a huge profit outta it enough to pay off some government officials to sign its release. Noticed how crap it became in the last few years?
omg i have goosebumps, this was the first park id ever been to, i reminiss on the time when my parents took me here for my 9th birthday back in 02, i won a red plushy fish on the dart and balloons game. iv still got it :), for the memories.
when i found out wonderland was closed i cried so much, iwas only in year four, it was very sad.
Damn it that was the commercial I used to see when I was like 5 or something, I'd get so excited every time I'd see it, Mummy Daddy can we go can we go? and then 5 years ago some filthy Malaysian multi millionaires tore it down, WE HATE YOU SUNWAY, WE HATE YOU VERY MUCH AND HOPE YOU HAVE PROBLEMS SLEEPING FOREVER FOR THE CHILDHOOD MEMORIES YOU SPLIT WITH AN AXE
I was 6 when it opened and must have gone about 20 times before I was 13. I used to work at "The Beach" when I was 16. I loved Wonderland and it's so sad that it's gone. I used to go into the park after my shift was over and would go on every ride before going home. I still wish I could go back, even though I'm 30 now. Despite the fact that working there wasn't so good (very bitchy) I feel somewhat privileged to have a statement of service in my resume.
I have been searching for this ad too, I'm sure the little boy in the ad was my old school friends brother.. and I used to own a wonderpass and went there every weekend ... only lived 15 minutes away...I pass the old site every weekend to see my parents .. It is a horribly destitute area, waiting for the fat cats to build their ugly factories =( .. such a shame, but what great memories we have to keep =)
OMG!!! I have been searching years for this ad. This was my favourite ad when I was younger - especially since I only lived two hours away from Wonderland. Thankyou so so much for this... It is GREAT to see it again.

@swiftwren If you want to read more, it's all on a dedicated website, wonderlandhistory. Google ought to point you to it.

I showed this to my friend today and he had tears streaming down his face after viewing it.
Wonderland was the first theme park we ever went to (we were both only 3 years old when Wonderland opened).
It may have closed 5 years ago but to us there is STILL a stinging reminder that Sydney really lost a part of its soul in 2004.
At least going to Wonderland as a child is an experience we will never forget - but sadly never get to live again either.
(Maybe now he should move to QLD? lol.)
