  • I've had this for over 35 years. I have a terrible time at malls and any high ceiling area or long hallway. I'm gonna go to a chiropractor to see if he can help. I am 59 and I just bought a motorcycle. After 1 month I found that my 'imbalance' or whatever you want to call it is disturbing enough to be dangerous and I'm seriously considering giving up bike riding. I sure hope this helps because I have a son & daughter who appear to be developing the same symptoms.

  • Thanks so much for the video. I had the problem years ago and got relief from physical therapy with this. When it happened again more recently, in light of having to wait for an appointment, I pulled up the video. When I felt well enough, I did the treatment to myself. Despite the fact that it took two attempts and triggered tremendous nausea and vomiting, here I am 2 days later feeling so much better and actually able to be vertical. This is nothing I would wish on my worst enemy. Thanks!

  • Do you recommend that I refrain from these activities until the vertigo and nausea are gone? Also, Is it common to experience nausea as the vertigo sensation subsides? Thank you so much

  • @33380freed No need to change your activities after the Epley maneuver. It is not unusual for people to feel slightly off, nauseated for a day or two after a successful maneuver.

  • @peterjohns84 Thanks so much...have been feeling GREAT after two days of doing the maneuver and I did not need to stop any of my activities. Thanks again...you rock!!

  • Thank you for your video. I have BPPV on/off for many years but didn't know what it was, I thought it was an ear infection, but the ENT said all was well in my ears. No ringing or loss of hearing and/or headaches. Just the vertigo and nausea. I started to do these maneuvers just yesterday and I do feel improvement after 5 days of having this vertigo sensation, although I am still somewhat nauseaous. I am an active woman, walking, yoga and pilates as part of my physical therapy. Questions:

  • Hi I have a balance issue ear pain doctor said might be bppv mri was negative and he also gave me corticosteroids for my synus. It's been two months and at my wits end. Any suggestions Dr.?

  • @euskaldanak Sorry, I don't. Hope you feel better soon.

  • It worked! :D

  • I'm still experiencing dizziness after 2 days of vertigo and 1 day off. We found your video and loved how explanitory it was. Thank you. Question though. Is it possible to only have the vertigo feeling on sitting up? I also noticed someone said they did it 3 times. Is this something you do with repition?

  • @playfulmemories Not sure what you're saying. Try search for "testing for horizontal canal" and try that test.

  • Peter this is a great, simple video, no fluff and very concise. Lets see the lateral canal work soon! -Dr.SS

  • @backhealth Going to do some video tomorrow on it. Thanks!

  • Thanks Peter. I am a Dr in the UK and have always struggled to do the Epley manoeuvre until now! Your video is very clear. Thanks again, James.

  • @Jim987445 Thanks for your kind words! I will soon post how to diagnose and treat lateral canal BPPV, a less common variant of the usual BPPV.

  • I don't get vertigo on either side but when I look down like the last step of epley I get it.. Or when I'm huddled over the toilet which creates a never-ending cycle of staying at the toilet

  • @swrcool Not sure what to make of that. I'd see your local doctor.

  • Can one do this on their own or do they need another person?

  • @marybridget3 I've known many people to have done it by themselves. This is not a recommendation to do so, but my understanding is that it can be done on your own.

  • thanks - it seems to be dissipating, the doctor suspected an ear infection/virus? hopefully it just goes away on its own! i appreciate you responding!

  • maybe i spoke too soon! it is now 4 months later, and it has returned, but it seems that while altering my head position does make it more acute, i am actually dizzy all the time now regardless of where i move my head, but at a lower level. worse in some ways as i can't control it. only if i am very still does it cease. i tried the EM but it doesn't resolve it. it is causing me to wake at night and so my doctor prescribed sleeping pills. any ideas?

  • @alexgmackenzie You could be suffering from another cause of vertigo, or possibly a variant of BPPV. You local doctor is your best bet for helping you.

  • @peterjohns84

Hello I have BPPV, im a 29 year old female, and i have had this on and off for years. I get the spinning when i look up for any more than 5 to 10 secs or when leaning down too far or lying back flat. This is reallly making me miserable. So my ENT doctor wants to perfom this epley maneuver,

  • I have the same symptoms... and I think all of this is a result of too much use of headphones... Anyway is there anybody Who can tell me How many times per day/week we have to do the Epley Maneuver???? PLeaseee Help mee :(

  • Thank you for posting.

Should a BPPV patient, after the first treatment, do Epley prophylactically? Have there been any studies to support whether yes or no?

  • @Samrx60 If by "do Epley prophlactically" you mean do the Epley when they no longer have BPPV symptoms, I see no reason to do another maneuver. If they have persistent BPPV symptoms, or it recurs, certainly, yes.

  • @peterjohns84 Thanks! You're a lot of help.

Ever thought about another video for another condition/disease? :-))

  • ---> and now I am experiencing vertigo suddenly this morning again. I am eager to try this maneuver as I am desperate to get some treatment, even for short term until I see the doctor again. I am just curious to know why doctors before never recommended this maneuver to me. Would this be safe to try w/o doctor prescribing it to me? Please advise and thanks in advance!

  • @tujjortoshkandiy I posted this video to teach medical professionals how to perform the Epley maneuver. I respectfully decline to comment on individuals possible diagnosis and appropriateness of the Epley Maneuver for them.

  • i have been experiencing vertigo for the last 2 years. the doctor i had attended here in the US told me that i have so called "acute vertigo" when I first experienced it 2 years ago and he prescribed me a drug called meclazine. it seemed to have disappeared for about a year after that treatment and came back again a year ago. That time I was back in my home country and a doctor there prescribed me a drug called Betaserc in combination with Cinnarizine (not available in the US) -->

  • Good afternoon.I was not diagnosed with Meneires or BPPV.I don't even have an ear infection. Doctor I visited stuck the tool in my ears and said that 'I have fluid in my ear' and displayed a chart showing the imbalance in the left ear. Again, I have no infection and I believe this was caused by excessive headphone use. I would love to hear your opinion. I was not diagnosed with BPPV and was told to take Bonine (meclazine) OTC and visit back in a week. What are your thoughts? Thank you very much

  • @AroundSun I am only comfortable commenting on the Epley maneuver.

  • @peterjohns84 Hello! Do you know how may times we have to do this per day/week???

  • @calinn17 If you have BPPV, then twice a day for a week should be plenty. If it's not working you either don't have the usual kind of BPPV, or you aren't doing the maneuver correctly, or you need further assessment by a doctor.

  • I'm from Taiwan, your video help me and my mom's BPPV, thank you very much.

  • Thanks so much. I had bppv last 8 days. We followed video to do Epley. BPPV is gone.

  • This time I'm still feeling a bit woozy although you did tell me last time it might take 24 hours to settle. Should I try again before I go to sleep tonight & can it affect a different side when it re-occurs?

  • Hi again, I tried the manouevre a couple of months ago after 5 mths of problems and it worked great, however today I did a Pilates class & to my utter dismay the problem is back. Last time it was definitely the right side and it feels more like my left side this time as I'm not having the same problem when I tip to the right. I've just done the manouevre again but it doesn't feel this time like it's worked. Last time I did it straight before I went to sleep and woke up feeling great.

  • Great demo. Thank you very much.

  • Gr8 WORK DOC..!!!

  • This is the best demonstration and explanation of the Epley manuever on the web! I've been suffering for a week with a severe vertigo triggered by head movements. I watched this video and performed the procedure at home. I had to repeat it five times before it cleared my symptoms but now I'm totally vertigo free! Thank you so much! People who haven't experienced Vertigo don't realize how scary and debilitating this condition can be. Being unable to walk, look up and down or turn your head has a

  • Scary! I didn't know what was happening to me. Immediately, I saw my Orthospinologist (chiropractor specialist) and that did help, but not entirely. A friend shared your method and after watching your video, I did it and was completely healed! I'm so grateful! I've heard that it can reoccur, but if it does, at least I'll know what to do! Thank you so much!

  • I plan on trying the maneuver tonight using the procedure from your video as in the past I have not had my head quite in the same position as your son's. However, I am just curious if you have had many patients where the Epley maneuver does not seem to totally work. Thanks.

  • @02HDFLSTC It is well documented that the Epley maneuver is successful in about 80 percent of people with one attempt. Repeating it will increase this to over 95%. My results are similar to this. Good luck!

  • Hello. I have been diagnosed with BPPV and had symptoms for the past year or so. I have dealt with my dizziness by doing the Epley maneuver at home, but I have yet to get total relief from the dizziness. I have attributed this to the fact that I have not been keeping my head upright for 48 hours, but after listening to you I am wondering if that is necessary.

  • @02HDFLSTC I don't think sleeping upright is necessary.

  • After watching this video my wife performed this maneuver on me and now I am completely cured.Thank you .

  • This is a good one. Thank you!!

  • that makes sense, thank you. Is it possible that getting out of bed too quickly and bending over (looking for socks on the floor without turning on light) could cause shifting if the "rocks" in the ear? I understand about the ringing and fullness being from possible bad circulation, however, when I did bend over too quick and for too long-- I was EXTREMLY Dizzy, hard to walk for a while, take shower-- etc.. until I did try this maneuver, thanks for taking the time and responding

  • continued- wife didnt notice my eyes "moving" on either right or left side- we did the maneuver as if the right side was affected since it was the full feeling side-do my eyes determine the side- or can the ringing/full feeling determine it-- thanks again , sorry for posting twice

  • I've been having dizzy spells ever since I got up one morning , bent over too quick & long,,very dizzy (on top of panic disorder), I've tried this and got some great relief, it started to come back, left ear ringing and right ear a bit of a "full" feeling, would it be correct to assume the affect side is the right side since it has a full feeling- or would it be the left -ringing side? thank you for taking the time

  • @donaldleejr BPPV is not generally accompanied by ringing in the ear or ear fullness, so you may have another condition, in which case, the Epley Maneuver would not help.

  • @donaldleejr

I am having the exact same symptoms. Just got an MRI and blood work and did not find any problems. I am seeing an Upper Cervical Chiropractor now...Read up about treatment with an Upper Cervical Chiroprator...Apparently a lot of people suffering with dizziness have been cured by the treatment from them.

  • @AprilDawnFletcher Actually, I did see a chiropractor a few weeks after that problem (I do know my blood and sugar are fine), and I felt great afterwards, could walk through a store without feeling dizzy. thank you sharing that info, I read up on it, and makes sense, I think I'll start going back, how has it been for you? is it helping? thanks again, God Bless

  • @donaldleejr

My blood and sugar are fine also...My dizziness has gotten better since Ive been seing the chiropractor. But I also have the panic attacks too. I think its because when you are feeling dizzy ALL the time, it starts to scare you not knowing whats wrong with you. Right after I got adjusted, I had a flair up of sorts, which the doc. said was normal. But it has been a lot better since. I have been going about a month now, and I feel SO much better! At least go and get a scan!

  • @donaldleejr BPPV would not usually present with fullness in the ear or tinnitus (ringing). Those symptoms match up more with Meniere's disease.

  • @dumps2310 thank you for the insight, I'll look into meniere's. I sure do appreciate this--god bless

  • This is a great video, well informed and accurate. This will help many people with BPPV. As mentioned in some of the other posts. It will not help all types of vertigo, especially if it is a side effect. Also be careful for geriatric people because of orthostatic hypotension, they may feel light headed dizzy or faint with quick movements.

  • Doctor where I can find you? I am miserable with vertigo. Please! Where are located? Thanks so much

  • i had a bad case of BPPV and didn't have internet or doctor access for a few weeks, so when i was finally back in the city, i found this video, followed it to the letter twice and it went away entirely. it is now 2 months later, and no reoccurrence at all. so - thanks!

  • @alexgmackenzie You're welcome!

  • Hi there, I was hospitalized in June with severe positional vertigo. I couldn't turn my head in any direction even an inch. Before leaving the hospital, the Dr. did this manuever. I was able to function outside of bed and the vertigo remained only when laying down on my right side. It took 5 weeks till it past. This past week, it started again but on my left side. I did this manuever but only 30 sec each side like I was taught. It went away and now its on my right again. What do I do now? Help!

  • @devc18 This is getting beyond what should be commented on via the web. Your local doctors would be your best resource.

  • Dear Sir, can i try this for my mother ( aged 50 years )?? who is suffering with severe dizziness caused by the antibiotic FORECOX. Actually she is suffering with Tuberculosis and doctor has prescribed her to take two tablets of FORECOX everyday before breakfast. I have informed my doctor about this dizziness he just says that its a normal side effect you need to eat well to get rid of it. So besides taking healthy diet, can i try this for my mother??

  • @vivveksharma1511 The Epley maneuver is only used to cure BPPV. BPPV is not caused by antibiotic use.

Therefore, if your mother's dizziness is caused by Forecox, doing the Epley maneuver will not help her.

  • Thanks a bunch Dr. Peter Johns... = )

  • This is the most informative vertigo treatment video I have found. Many I have watched didnt make it clear about determining which side is affected, and therefore which side to begin the epley... Yours was very simple, straighforward, and gave enough info to do this on my own.

    Thanks!

  • I was suffering from dizziness since 4-5 days and was taking MECLIZINE (25 MG) AND DIAZEPAM (5MG) every 8 hours as prescribed by my doctor. But it did not help. I tried this with the help of my wife and I coulnt believe the dizziness went away. Will see if it comes again in the coming days. Thanks a ton for this very good video. God Bless you!!

  • @3dsohel Let's hope you have persistent wellness!

  • Did my first Body Pump exercise class today, first time for ages & it went really well, just a slight feeling when I laid flat, but otherwise no symptoms. should I repeat or leave well enough alone?

  • @SapphireProperties If true spinning occurs, repeating it is fine. If you just felt a bit funny, give it a bit.

  • I tried this last night from a diagram but turned over onto the wrong side (I have severe problems on my right side) and tunred over onto my right sire. Today I feel so much worse and had to leave my Zumba class this morning as any real movement made me feel really wierd. Can I repeat again tonight now I have seen your video and know how to do it properly?

  • @SapphireProperties Sure, shouldn't be a problem.

  • @peterjohns84

Did this again Monday evening with the help of my hubby after showing him your video. After 5 months of misery and countless courses of tablets from the doctor I cannot tell you how different I now feel. I hadn't realised how unwell I felt every day, I suppose I got used to feeling that way but my head now feels so much clearer and last night I slept on my right side without going dizzy for the first time in months.Thank you so much for your video and it's clear instructions!

  • @SapphireProperties I am very happy to hear that all went well!

  • Just experienced my first bout of intense BPPV yesterday. It was terrible. Saw my ENT doctor today and he verified diagnosis. I'm going to try this tonight with the help of my husband, and I'll report back with how it worked. I experience nausea (no vomiting) along with the vertigo, and so am very anxious to fix this problem! Thanks for the clear instructions and the demonstration.

  • Very informative. Best thing I've seen for diagnosing BBP at home (I know I'm not supposed to, but my husband simply *won't* go to the doc unless something falls off or turns green! :)

  • HI thanks for your upload, very helpful.

Is it common to experience a bit of being 'off' and a slight 'swaying' sensation afterwards? And if so, for how long would be considered normal?

  • @starsalignster Yes, some people feel this for about 24 hours.

  • Hi

Thanks a lot for a really great demo. It's one of the best I have had, even during med school.

    Best

  • Great Video! Useful & very clear.

However, one important item you did not address: the intense nausea sometimes associated with BPPV. How do you do the Hallpike diagnosis or Epley treatment without making the patient vomit? Or, how do you complete the diagnosis/treatment if the patient persistently feels like they are going to vomit in response to the manipulations? Do you recommend taking Meclizine or Dramamine, etc. shortly before Hallpike/Epley maneuvers to help reduce nausea?

  • @marrazzousa In my experience, patients with BPPV do not have intense, persistent nausea. If your patient is having nausea before you start the Hallpike or Epley, they most likely do not have BPPV. They can on occasion have nausea during the Hallpike or Epley, but in fact, I have never had to terminate an Epley because the patient has to vomit. I'm sure it could happen, and perhaps the vestibular sedatives you mentioned would be useful .

  • I have been searching the internet for a week for the Epley maneuver. My doctor showed me briefly but said to look it up on the net. Your demonstration is the absolute best I have been able to find. I thank you for taking the time to explain it thoroughly.

  • excellent presentation thanks great job , the best on line, cheers to you and your son

  • Many thanks for this. I was experiencing vertigo everytime I lay back and my head was rotated to the left. I could reproduce the effect consistently and at will. The symptoms continued for a week. I followed this procedure and immedately after the 10 minute vertical wait time at the end, the vertigo sensation was gone and I could not make it happen. Amazing!!!!!

  • I had a favorite link to a written description with pictures of the maneuver but lost it. Your presentation was much better. With a surprise 5 am vertigo onset, I'm thrilled with your presentation. And your son is very cute.

  • Thank you for this video - I've suffered with BPPV since October 1999 (on/off) and have just performed this procedure on myself with successful results!

    Just brilliant!!

  • I had spinning of the room vertigo when laying down, sitting up and bending my neck to look down. Performed these exercises on both ears (both sides) - helped completely after just one session! Thanks so much for posting it!

  • Thanks for the post. It was clear and helpful.

  • Thanks for posting this as well. Very helpful!!! :)

  • Good follow up to the EM RAP discussion

    Thanks!

    DG, Denver

  • The iPad correction wrote ellet . I meant to say Epley thanks again

  • Thanks a lot. By far the best description of the Ellet on the Internet. Geriatrician at uc irvine, long beach va
