Exellent presentation, Although I don't agree with the role of technology as you decribe it. Technology has been a major game changer. The cost of good equipment (dslr, processing software) has dropped to the extent that anybody now has access to great equipment at a low price. And software has greatly simplified the skill set needed to produce great images. This has levelled the playing field.
Very well executed presentation. Every aspect that you have spoken about is very relatable to me as defining who I am in photography. Thanks very much.
So very true. This explains very well what I have come to realise happened in the world of photography back in the 2000. Adapt and change or die is a good way of putting it. I see the Dino's everywhere still. I even know of of Dino's who have given up and closed down because they didn't want to change. Like your vids cousin Michael.
I have been a professional advertising/editorial photographer in London since the early 70's, so that makes me a dinosaur (a small one). I would like to add one point to your map. I still get work from clients not because I am the most creative photographer, or the cheapest. My clients keep coming back because I am reliable and consistent - they trust me to get the shot they need, and have it done to meet their deadlines. Thanks for your channel - it is very inspirational and stimulating.
There has been a big change in dSLR cameras in the last couple of years, which took off with the Canon EOS 5D Mk2 - the fact that most new dSLRs are now able to capture high quality HD video. This means that stills photographers (with just the one camera) can, and do, turn their hands to taking on video work as well as traditional photography.
@mrman17 Yes, that's a great movement! I think we will see much more effect of this soon. But then again, it's no real game changer either. I think the real biggy came with the internet. Everyone who wants to shoot can educate himself in a matter of weeks and everyone who needs a photographer can compare all ports on the planet.
I would be careful with using the "GWC" or Guy with Camera label - in some circles, this is actually quite a derogatory term. It's basically used to describe a person who uses photography as a pretence to get women/models to pose naked or in sexy lingerie for nothing more than the "Perve", and not for any artistic reasons.
@Orcinus24x5 Comon, you're not stuck. Next step: Just define your personal, favorite style. Start dreaming a little bit bigger and there you go again. I mean really, I know you would never think this way, but even if you would blame being stuck on the quality of your models and in response to that you would try harder to find better ones. Well, even if the thinking went into the wrong direction, it might still take you a step further as a result. Live is cool and rewarding, isn't it?
