Not knocking Bob Dylan down (he is my favorite artist of all time) but he is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overrated. The Beatles weren't, they were the best band ever.
This film is overrated by hipster washouts and 3rd rate film critics that think that they know everything there is to know about the art after doing a semester on the subject at a city college. With this movie, it got into the writer's mind that taking lyrics and mis-quotes from Bob Dylan and substituting them for actual creative dialogue was a good idea. Just because a message is non specific, doesn't mean it's wise, it's just lazy writing. That said, this movie has got some brilliant acting.
@JudasOmaha90 Alot of these aren't misquotes. Most of the dialogue comes from videos that you can see in all kinds of Bob Dylan documentaries. Don't get me wrong, of course those documentaries are going to be biased and one sided, but they aren't misquotes.
fucking well said. i feel very bad for cate blanchett, who had some awful awful dialogue to work with but was so accurate in her delivery and in keeping the audience distant from the character (which is what dylan did). i'm a huge fan and i cringe during some lines, but the way her sequences flow are quite good.
@modoggie10 In I'm Not There, the main characters are all different personas of Bob Dylan. Cate Blanchett plays Jude Quinn, a musician in the mid 60s who decided to go electric, much to the annoyance of his "loyal fans" (just like Dylan). In my opinion I think this movie isn't a typical biopic, but a film full of references to Dylan's life and work. It's a bit cofusing but it's clever.
@lamc93 thanks SO much, that really cleared it up for me.
i think this film is kind of like a layer of metaphors, eventually divvying up to the life of bob dylan himself. it's kind of hard to understand because of all the "inside jokes" in it, so to speak. in other words, it's confusing if you're not from the era in which all of this happened.
This film, among many things, will always stand as a testament to what "Across the Universe" could have been - A film that not only respects the original material but is actually clever and worthy of it. BRAVO Todd Haynes!
@JunkySkeleton yes it is part 'Long Days night' and part 'fellinis 8 and a half' I thought that as well, the music, the camera movement and the way it moves between reality and fantasy
Another toast to the complete slaughtering and shitting upon the fragments of Dylan's life.
Edie Sedgwick *never* dated Bob Dylan (she said so herself, as did Bob). It was only Neuwirth (who is depicted in the movie as dating her in the tarantula party scene).
For years people blamed Dylan for her death, because they thought she got on barbiturates because of him. Not the case, she dated Neuwirth for a few years until he broke up with her for being too out of it on methedrine.
@rockinbrowneyedgirl Haha. Though, Bob Dylan nor any of the Beatles were, exactly, heartthrobs. I'm not saying that they weren't attractive, they were just, well, dorky..
better get groovy or leave man.. isn't that what bob dylan really says to the drunk dude who threw the glass in the video that claims bob was drunk and pissed? haha.. he's the man... why can't music have a msg as eminent as what he was trying to say anymore?
yea they did a movie about her with sienna miller in it factory girl, but bob said that movie lied and he never went out with her lots of people complained about story wrong, yet he aloud it in this movie same kinda people just different names, al though in that movie it sounded like bob was to blame for edies death which he wasn't.
Yeah, 'Factory Girl' wasn't really historically accurate. Edie had a huge crush on Bob Dylan and they supposedly hung out every so often, but they never had a sexual relationship of any kind.
I was near the set when they shot those scenes with the Beatles outside. And I did not know that it was Cate Blanchett in that costume. Great performance!
Yes, it's definitely The Beatles. I think it's supposed to symbolize Dylan introducing them to pot, which has been well documented - changing music history forever.
Does anyone know anything about the model they call Coco? I've never heard anything about an affair with a model. She looks like Twiggy, though. Thanks.
I don't think her scenes were the ONLY good ones, but she was by far the best Dylan. Partly because she's such an amazing actress, but also because she represents the story most of us know best. But great film. A-ma-zing Blanchett.
the scary thing is cate actually looks a lot like bob dylan in this movie... i borrowed one of his CDs and the resemblance between cate and the cover picture is uncanny!
