  • Pause at 2:55!!! You can see zombies walking, the longer you look, the more faces you start to see. Its soo crazy, this has to be a fake photo

  • I think my soul just had an orgasm.

  • Knowledge doesn't detract from anything.

Our own Solar System is so much more majestic for our understanding of it.

Jupiter, for example, is incomprehensible in its relative mass - But hey, it's still there! Weird as it may be, it's still a close neighbor. And thank anything for that.

  • When Alexei sees a double rainbow, he knows what it means.

  • I just made a video, science is beautiful, and it's no where's as good or as inspiring as this video. This video is amazing and very interesting. I really want to inspire the same sort of curiosity that this video conjure in me.

  • this video makes my nipples hard

  • DOUBLE RAINBOW LOL

  • Extremely well done. The beauty of life (those who observe) is the Beauty of Science, for me particularly physics. Thank you.

  • double rainbow all the way

  • double rainbow!!!

  • Knowledge does not detract from beauty, awe, wonder and mystery. In fact it enhances all these things. The more you learn, the more you realize how little you understand.

The appreciation of these things is learned. Not inherent.

  • @L00NGB00W Why do people act like beauty is something superficial? Einstein formulated its equations by beauty and elegance of them

    its a scientific quality

  • Put a child in a room with the Mona Lisa, and a box of magic markers. Before long; Mona Lisa will be sporting a Hitler Mustache, EyePatch, Boogers, and Scars.

The child has not been taught to appreciate the beauty therein.

"Why do people act like beauty is something superficial?"

I'd say it's because the reason for fighting science is based on a superficial belief.

Take away the superficial superstition and all the beauty gets sucked out... aww.

Good thing it doesn't work that way. =)

  • Science seeks truth, will one day explain why we like it, whilst others continue to seek beauty, the human truth.

    They will converge.

  • an awesome video, i think i will have to tell my science class teacher about this one :D

  • Professor:

Your right, knowledge enhances the beauty found in the natural cosmos,

deepening the meaning of it's awesome creation of just being.

Adding greater meaning to all Arts & Sciences semiotically.

Enhancing the mavelous meaning & the experiential experience of the awe of self realization....

    jus lil o'me

  • People dont understand how beautiful science really is.

  • Edgar Rice Burroughs published A Princess of Mars, a science fiction novel, in 1917. Carl Sagan read the novel as a child. I remember Sagan mentioning Burroughs' novels about life on Mars during the time he was making many television appearances. I saw pictures in these books as a kid. There was plenty of all kinds of life on Mars. Sagan always dreamed about finding life on Mars, but the Viking Missions in the 70's revealed images of a barren planet. No princesses, no life, and no nightlife.

  • Science IS beautiful. I very much agree with the point that the professor and this video make... well done! (I do think the music competes a bit too much with the professor's words. Sorry!)

  • How does it do anything but enhance the beauty of life to understand. Every step we make towards discovering the why, what ever the reason, that we can discover it with pure logic and laws of the universe, I feel greater wonder and amazement for us. This is despite reality TV of course...

  • I feel the same thing. It is always interesting to study the universe. You will never get bored seeing all the beautiful things this world offer to us.

  • Now that's what I call a lecture.

  • machine consciousness can be tedious and slow

  • excellent video. thanks!

  • Beautiful just beautiful

  • this video is absolutely beautiful!

  • ffreethinker is one of my best subscriptions

  • I just want to share this video with everyone....

    It explains what I feel....

  • plz,plz make more like this

  • have you ever seen jello do a live spoken words?or listen to any of his spoken words record? if you havent you should and if you have i dont understand how you dont hear the simularities.yup i love the dead kennedys

  • What the name of the music playing?

  • pachelbel's canon

  • yay! canon rock!

  • Fantastic video once again!

I always tell people who pose a question such as this...

When you goto an art exhibit, and view a rather old painting of a great classical painter for example... What do you marvel at?

I know how it was painted. I know what went into the materials necessary to make the painting. People can even tell me the exact makeup of the pigments used in the paint.

Or read the history of the painter, and know he was born just like myself. Yet I still marvel at its beauty.

  • Perfectly said! the beauty is the understanding!

  • yeah i love jello too,it was meant as a compliment :)

  • "My favorite planet is the sun! It's like the king of planets!"

    -Will Farrel as Harry Caray

  • canon in d <3<3<3

  • agreed <3<3<3

  • this guy sounds like jello biafra

  • lol... being familiar with both...

    Yeah!

    They actually do.

The funny part is I bet both of them would take that as a compliment. That's why I love both those/these guys.

  • dude this sounds nothing like him, a lecturer and ann aging punk are two sperate things.

  • Refreshing to see something unrelated to some "internet beef."

  • Sadly... I have to echo this comment.

  • Gotta thank you for this one... I'm in the process of writing my first peer reviewed paper as first author and have spent almost every waking moment of the last two weeks refining figures and tables... thanks for reminding me why I started this journey- beauty and truth.

BTW- you make good stuff. Glad I subscribed.

  • i love the canon in D minor, fits perfectly with this video

  • Yep - just adds a nice ambiance to the excerpt....

  • Oh - I checked the additional info, it's in D major not minor...still sounds great...

  • I totally respect this guy... I've seen him a lot... and I do have to disagree with him on but one minor point.

    I don't think he's interpreting Whitman correctly.

I've already read that poem to mean something to the effect of "learning is important and good, but you can't really appreciate the study until you get out of the lecture hall and actually LOOK around the world in which you live."

That doesn't mean "science lectures are bad"... he's saying to focus on what's important.

    Nice Vid.

  • which is...Experience?

  • I wouldn't say experience... but... somewhat I guess.

    More "the act of experiencing".

    Living.

It's important to learn, but it's more important to put that knowledge into use.

  • Well represented video. I appreciate his viewpoint. I understand that beautiful "thing" and can appreciate more of its beauty, by understanding its nature.

Though in contrast, I too can appreciate a God that I do not fully comprehend or understand with all of the complexities that reside therein. I do not need unequivocal proof of His nature or motives. If you choose not to believe, all the power to you, thats your perogative!

  • I'm great, aside from having to come up with an "original sin". It's so hard. I think I'll go poke a badger. I don't think anyone else has done that.

  • Take a rake to a posseum under a chair on your porch like a knight with a lance. That's fun indeed as they never expect you running toward them from the grass to get them on the porch.

I don't know how fun it is to poke a badger.

  • this is so cool i never question or looked at how thing are i just take it as it is like the sun i dont know why it dont burn out to me it just that way

  • Neither Nature nor science are beautiful. It is the human mind that is beautiful because that's the only place beauty exists.

  • word

  • Science is beautyfull because it explains things? Then religions are beautyful?

Isn't it nature that's beautyful? Science and religions, in different ways, help to see reality.

Some people think they need to believe in science in order to stop believing in religions, but won't it take them far away from reality?

  • How religion can see reality? Reality like what? Everything was created perfectly?

If that is so, Cell wont mutate and there will be no virus. If the landscape was created perfectly, there wont be any natural disaster.

  • Religion is not only what american creationists are making of it...

  • How do you mean?

  • Well, American Creationists are promoting a terrible image of religion. I wouldn't be surprised their best friends are muslim fanatics...

But re-ligion means (latin) "reading again" (re+legere) and "re-linking" (re+ligare) people, so basically, any dogma using texts and establishing a link between people is a religion. Science in this view is sort of a "religion".

And, in my opinion, as religions are based on texts : when it turns stupid, you just dump everything and read in a different way

  • Science isn't based on books. We write books to document our understanding. If something is proven wrong we dont "read in a different way", we abandon the idea.

Comparing Science to religion is like comparing birds to fairies. One is real and amazing in its own right. The other is fantasy which relies on magic to maintain its beauty.

  • People who don't see the beauty in the fields of science such as the sun, the stars, our earth, and the humbling feeling of thinking about it all truly has no imagination or at very least hasn't stopped to appreciate the lesser things.

  • The sun has original sin! It needs to repent! But if it does...it'll burn the church...hrm...

  • I can watch this again and again.

    Such a thing of beauty.

  • when we understand something, even partially, that becomes a part of us. Nothing is as beautiful as something we've invested in.

  • Very nice video and Alexei V. Filippenko sounds like an inspiring lecturer. Only the music is too loud, it's sometimes hard to hear the words, especially near the end.

  • Go Giants!!!

  • this is so cool i never question or looked at how thing are i just take it as it is like the sun i dont know why it dont burn out to me it just that way

  • surely this is the beauty of nature? science is just observing nature

  • GO BEARS!

  • weeeeeeeeee!

  • Oh shut it.

  • Revel in his greatness!!!

  • Yeah it's amazing how he didn't do anything but cause the deaths of millions in the Inquisition, Holocaust, Crusades, Dark Ages, Witch Trials, Holy Wars, and the Iraqi War.

It's beautiful what nature has done though....

  • Those wars were in his name so i think i will. Though if you want, we can talk about the wars god waged in the bible, and how he killed more people than satan. But if that's the best you got then there's no point for you to be here. So just enjoy the beauty of what nature gave us.

  • Oh I need to grow up? That's irony right? Cause you're the one acting immature, calling people names, cursing, and being pointlessly aggressive? Well it's good irony, but it's not that funny. Try harder. Or, take the high road and give evidence to support your claims. Your choice.

  • Oh so you do satire! I can tell because you portraying the ignorant, hypocritical christian! Or are you really that? Well no matter, as long you can enjoy all of what nature has given us, i don't mind your ignorance. Peace!

  • So you're liar? you said you would ignore me. Very hypocritical. Thank you for the compliment, a lot of girls would agree that I'm hot, though personally i think that's going a bit overboard, but what the hey, thanks anyway. Nature is awesome! Peace!

  • Well guys who are straight care about girls, the vagina is a great place, and I've found no pleasures that man can give me that a girl can't, so i'ma stick with girls. You have obviously never had sex. with a woman. sex is a workout so it would be hard to get fat from sex. But if you're messing with me I'll just ignore you then. Peace, Sodomite!

  • haha i totally recognized his voice. filippenko is fuckin awesome.

  • Science without the details (facts) is only a religion. To understand is infinitely more satisfying than to believe.

  • But if we get rid of religion, what will morally bankrupt exploitive scum bags do for a living?

  • The same thing they always have, run for office.

  • Bravo!!!

  • I'm so darn angry now. You should sit back and watch us all get upset and argue against you. TROLL.

  • Are you for serious?

  • No, I am just amazed that power can still come from stupidity and appealing to the reptilian brain of man.

  • I knew this couldn't be serious when you said George W. Bush is all the authority we need. What was your point of doing that, so people could hate you? Cause that's all bringing to yourself.

  • my point is that arguments from authority in a semi-feudal watch?v=ODo86UOfHqI society is still valid for the majority of peasants, I mean people. This, for a free-thinker as myself is a curious fact that people subject other people and these later group bends over on a daily basis.

So, yeah 38% of Americans still think Bush was somehow a ok President and I think that is an astonishing fact that people did not call him out after 2 months

    watch?v=0xv09GlHs6g

  • Well then maybe you should have put that on some other channel. and what do you mean reptilian brain of man.

  • Prove it by getting off the internet hypocrite. Great thinkers like GW Bush? Lol!

  • WOOT! Thank you so much for making this vid. I have always felt this way, but now I can watch this video, see the visualizations and listen to the fantastic music that accompanies it all, making it an excellent video of which to describe this passion I have for science, knowledge, the amazing universe, and everything in it. A passion of which I am proud to share with others. Great job. Your efforts in making this video are greatly appreciated.

  • wow

  • wow your voice kinda startled me at the start

  • That is so wow. There's no other word. It's exactly the way I feel. It's awesome.

  • Yes, there is a reason why everything is exactly the way it is, and you've almost certainly been told what that reason is.

In case, however you haven't, here it is:

    Forty two.

  • Fuck yes. THIS.

  • It's "amazing to me that the universe is interesting"! Bully for you and your "brain".

What an emotional burst of claptrap.

Some great visuals, mind you. Thanks for those.

  • great video man

  • Cannon in D is great.

  • nice video - it is nice to see the excerpt from the lecture I heard via rabidape and to see it with good images and a backing track.

  • Nice.

  • this video is super tits - but what IS the government putting in our water to make rainbows? 3:43

  • ground up leprechauns

  • Pachelbel and science - it doesn't get better!

  • 5 stars and add to Favorite, Great Job

  • We have to supply science with beauty or we end up murdering it.

  • Alex Filippenko has a DVD course on astronomy that you can get from The Teaching Company. They also have a really nice new course on cosmology. I highly recommend.

    teach12. com

Don't buy it unless it is on sale for 70% off, otherwise it is too damn expensive.

  • Awesome and Beautiful!!

  • Part of science is pushing beyond the simple senses. A scientist stands before the natural world as a friend, with no animosity, but a sense of wonder and admiration.

We are flesh and bone, but we can create beauty, justice, hope, love, and awe. That is our greatest gift to ourselves.

What an inspiring video. Perfect videography and music, in tone and form. Wonderful.

  • Great vid!

  • Inspiring. Every student of any scientific field should listen to this, because it can be tedious when we miss the big picture and only focus on the data.

  • I second this as a programmer (okay, not strictly a science, maybe, but there's a lot of data).

  • Hey, I'm also into Computer Science, and right now I'm looking, and using, the big picture, not the hundreds of thousands of lines of code needed to make a computer work.

  • I really enjoyed this. I have to be honest though and comment that the music was a bit too loud for me to hear the Prof. speak at times.

  • wonderful vid

  • watch?v=EtqUNUqUq8Q

  • Fantastic Vid.

  • yeah Allah is so great

  • Am I ever thankful that classical music is in the public domain!!

  • Music should be maybe half volume next time.

  • were those pictures of the sun real? just in like radiowaves or something?

  • They are. Those are some of the big solar flares that take out our communications.

  • An excellent video, I particularly love the score its a perfect fit with the natural wonders.

Alot of "intelligent designers" bring up the point of the accuracy of the universal constants, saying if they were 'tweaked' at all the we would get this unintereting 'stillborn' universe. While I can understand this lecturers point, we do we think this way? Is there any reason to think the constants COULD be anything than what they are?

  • I like the score too. Pachelbel's Canon if I'm not mistaken.

  • ID'ers make the assumption that there is purpose to this. If the finetuning was different we wouldn't be here to witness the fact that the universe exists so it's just a case of being able to do so. Who knows if billions of other possible combinations would still have allowed life under some sort or the other and they would wonder the exact same thing i.e. was it made specially for them?

  • While this could be pondered on to quite an extent, a lot of things could be a bit different and life would still be functionable. Humans could still exist and comfortably. Surely, certain things would be more profound than others and might not be as bendable and stretchable as other things, but... Yes, I'm sure there literally are billions of realistic possibilities, neverminding mathematics and infinity =P

  • This is getting ludicrous, you getting vote-botted. The next step in the creationists arsenal is false flagging as they have been doing to most popular YT rationalists.

Hey everyone, FFreeThinker has been at the forefront of battles against vote-botting and false flagging so, if he does get suspended from false flagging, EVERYONE who believes in rational thought and free speech must do whatever they can to get on YT's case to get him re-instated. This creationist campaign is utter bullshit!

  • How do you know it is creationist? I think it is mostly Atheists false flagging each other because perhaps they are jealous of each other of their popularity? This is a great video, I enjoy watching FFreeThinkers videos. It gives me idea of what you all think about.

  • It's creationists because, to the best of my knowledge, it has been proven to be creationists at the heart of many vote bot attacks and false flagging campaigns. Maybe a handful o atheists and anti-religious people have maliciously abused the system and this community's compassion to make it seem like it was the creationists, but when it keeps happening to channel after channel, and that includes the bigger ones, they can't all be cheating the system after so much evidence suggesting otherwise.

  • Well, I don't know and I really don't care concerning these ratings. Most Atheists has a rating fetish, because they insist on rating every video. But I agree YT should do something about false flagging. But then again, I think people need to approach the community in a descent manner. For example fowl language. That would get you flagged. But other than that, I don't care what you say in your videos. Your opinions are subject to God, not I.

  • Well, they want high ratings for I'd guess three reasons:

    1. So they're easier to find for people interested in what they talk about

    2. To counteract any vote bot attacks from those who would seek to censor them by making it harder for people to find them, or impossible, except through other channels or friends

    3. A sense of pride for promoting reason and science.

And, yeah, opinions are subject to no one =P If God existed, I wouldn't be an atheist and neither would they.

  • Videos with low ratings are less likely to be found.

    Freedom of speech is important.

  • stunning composition!

I am honored to have played a small part....

The interconnectedness of things is beautiful, ain't it?!

  • In fact you played a mayor part.

I could make this video only, because you uploaded the lecture on your channel yesterday. :)

    -FFreeThinker

  • No, you could have gone over to the Berkeley Webcast site like I did... ;P

But yes, I'm glad to use my channel for "flag waving", in this sense.

I see my primary role on YT as "meme vector".

    Creative Commons ftw!

  • No, because it was your annotation "it nearly brought a tear to my eye" that was essential. ;P

  • i definitely understand what the professor means by the science making the universe more magnificent.

The idea that there is no designer, that this order and chaos of the universe is natural makes it even more incredible that it all happens in the way it does. Nature is so powerful without trying, simply through its natural unplanned process makes it incredible that we have what we have today.

    Awe-inspiring stuff.

Understanding how it happens makes us feel a greater connection to it all

  • That is not entirely true. The shape of a galaxy eliptical or spiral does not tell us anything about its age. There is in fact not an "evolution" of galaxies, they don't change directly in proportion to time.

  • Wow man! The song iz lyk Canon Rok!

Kidding, nice to hear Johann Pachelbel's broque original for strings

  • Ive always disliked the question "what is the purpose of exsistance".I seems to be the begining...the metamorphose of a god.I never understood the reason for asking this question, although I have a good sence of curiosity.Maby it's motavation has more to do with fear.

  • i'm going to NEED to watch this again in HQ :P

  • Simply beautiful. I'd love to see this go viral.

  • Some of those clips at the end of the earth were just jaw-dropping.

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing pictures, I'm glad I have a subscription to you. I love space, and I wish creationists would study it more closely, instead of saying ''God made it'

  • This reminds me of a conversation I had with my English teacher. I said how it is important to learn what we can, and she replied, "but how can we maintain a sense of wonder if we know about (insert subject)?"

Filippenko puts it beautifully well how one may still have wonder without ignorance.

  • huz and kisses

  • What's a huz?
