It's a subgenre of metal but it's not the best representation of metal. That goes to Thrash, Nwobhm, and Death Metal. Symphonic metal can be very heavy but it's not as badass or something you can party and drink beer to. To me, operatic singers are more like accessories to the music, pure metal female leads are the ones who can do the same things as male leads (just only a little more feminized). So basically, the ideal metal female leads are the ones I mentioned in all my other comments.
