Phil and Steve are two totally different writters, It seems Genesis worked because Mike, Tony, and even Peter could adapt to either pop or progressive very well. I just feel Phil should have kept his writting in his own band. Steve was right when he said Genesis were stronger in their solo acts as he said in other interviews
tony´s behaviour towards hackett is pretty nasty, but is was the perfect remark to break the silence after hackett´s joke failed -- these americans are just too idon´t know what to have self irony,- butts! gabriel was smart not to appear
You have to give Phish credit for trying to play these songs in front of the band themselves. But the intro to Watcher was rushed and NO ONE on this planet can play with the rhythmic precision of Tony Banks. And no one else in the Hall of Fame uses as many diminished & minor6 chords as him. Definitive version of "Watcher of the Skies" for me is still from Genesis Live (1975).
I don't understand how the band can talk ill of Watchers. It was one of the biggest prog rock masterpieces along with suppers ready, incredible music that doesn't get made anymore yet they would rather phish had played turn it on or invisible touch?! oh please give me a break...
they should have played duchess, misunderstanding, that's all or abacab instead of no reply at all. but it was important to play a song from the mainstream era.
@skintrade Tony's always protected the integrity of the band. Steve seems a little...off. That drug joke wasn't really appropriate. But they've always got along, still do according to what the band says.
@skintrade I have to wonder. He was pretty restless for a while and didn't seem to think before he spoke. I think Tony was a little uncomfortable. Not meaning to discredit Steve, understand, but I don't know that he was up to par this night.
Bad Song Selection By Phish to Remember This Great Band. Watchers i love but that Audience that was setting look like they couldn't wait for it to be over No Reply at all was a no no So Many Great Songs i think if i has to pick one from Pete and one from phil .. i know what l like and Hold on my Heart what two songs would you guys say ?
@retisonic a half ass fuck you. watcher of the skies was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!but no reply at all was horrible (it would of been better if page singed, but still not salvageable)............and phish is my fav band so believe me if i say something is good or bad im being real (im no liar fan who thinks everything my fav band has done is good,if it sucks it sucks)
What an interesting contrast in personalities. Hackett seems a little tipsy and Banks and Rutherford seem annoyed by it. Phil Collins thankfully saves them all because he is the only one comfortable in front of an audience, whether or not he's playing music. Can you imagine what it would have been like if Collins (like Gabriel) had not been able to make it to the induction. It would have been just these three. How boring and tense would that be?
@setalip68 Tony does joke. He's the one that says, "we don't know who this guy is. We couldn't get rid of him", in regards to Steve's Hall of 'Blame' joke. I have heard him make many jokes over the years. They all have actually. Peter & Phil were able to be front men as well as musicians because they both happened to have the ability to communicate w/ the audience.
Phish did a good job covering, they did it in a lazy way as Jam bands do. The piano dude was a bit off timing and he fudged the lyrics up too. Tony seems a bit grumpy during the night, but everyone has bad days... I bet he wanted to get up there and play... Poor Phil Collins couldn't because of injuries... Gabriel did not make it because of some new tour that he is doing (zzzzzz.... snore).
i like that they did something from phils era its very hated but it still has great moments even on duke and abacab, mama and invisible touch were poor but even invisible touch had some good progressive(ish) songs
how many other non-hall-of-famers are tapped to cover an inductee's tunes?... can anyone offer another band besides phish that could cover Genesis's complex compositions? Phish CAN jam but as Mike said, they are one of (if not the most) composition-oriented bands out there. There's HUGE genesis (early genesis, not p-collins blather) influence in their early stuff... Some don't "Get It" just as Salieri didn't "Get" Mozart in the Amadeus screenplay. Genesis/Phish?... genius meets genius.

With the exception of a very small few modern groups, the only bands that could cover Genesis' stuff would be bands of that era - Yes, Kansas, Rush - to name a few. Very few bands nowadays have the background, the schooling or the skills to even dream of pulling off songs of the pre-80's Genesis' albums.
Nah... it wasn't real fighting at all, just the usual Genesis banter. Honestly I wish they had done something acoustically with Steve, and then Phil wouldn't have had to worry the drum thing, plus Chester was there, so if they wanted drums, why not?
Seems like Banks/Collins/Rutherford would've preferred Steve Hackett not show up. Or maybe they're just playfully bantering, and they all have this sort of "whatever" attitude. I honestly don't think there's bad blood between SH and the rest...
@wscott16 Yeah I don't know, there certainly was bad blood when they broke up in 1977. I honestly don't know, I could see it as just joking or them adding "just kidding" even though they truly hate each other.
@awcindy ...i think they're probably so far removed from one another that it really doesn't matter anymore. That and of course over three decades have passed. They're just cranky old men now (just look at Phil). Banks gives the impression he doesnt like anyone or anything anymore.
Not true. Banks always looks like that. People who joined the group (Steve, Chester, Daryl) all have said that at first they thought maybe Tony disliked them but later they realized it was just that he's very reticent. He himself says that in videos he's always looking grimly at the keyboard. But if you pay attention, you see he is grinning as he responds to Steve's jokes. He's just not the type to grin broadly or laugh a lot like Phil.
He does joke. He's the one that says, "we don't know who this guy is. We couldn't get rid of him". I have heard him make many jokes over the years. They all have actually. Peter & Phil were able to be front men as well as musicians because they both happened to have the ability to communicate w/ the audience.
Phil destroyed this band, Banks and Rutherford were just Sheep.. Go Hackett! F' Banks! Englishmen with Keyboards WTF? HONESTLY PHISH IS HORRIBLE! DO THEY TAKE VOICE LESSONS? Change name from Phish to Garbish!
@RealLightningFans hey, I gave you a 'thumbs up' for part of your rant. But really....keyboards dominated the band a lot more than electric guitar. Phish keyboardist singing did sound pretty bad there. But the other guy was great doing Watcher especially. I'll see Hackett in a few months....hopefully
@RealLightningFans you dont know what you're talking about when it comes to phish. I agree that phish's vocals were off for no reply at all, but to simply throw them away as a joke is just stupid. phish has been one of the most important bands of the last 20 years without question and i'm sorry that you have no clue when it comes to their music. I reccommend you check them out because you are simply missing out right now
@RealLightningFans just shows how you know nothing about phish, lets atleast admit that pal. phish sounds more like genesis than the grateful dead sport
I always thought there was much more prog rock and Zappa influence in the sound of Phish than the Dead by far. I spent my formative years listening to the Dead and when Phish came out I never really saw a true lineage to the Dead. Don't listen to a lot of Phish but I've listened to enough to hear the inner workings. The Dead had the real anything goes west coast feel. Real loosey goosey.
Phil didn't destroy anything but did what he does best. Maybe not satisfying all the previous followers, but give him a break. If you know him at all, he is one talented dude. Just not Peter... Phil took this band on an astronomical ride of success.
yeah, but they should have put something together with Peter as well. In respect of all the fans. It was a perfect opportunity to put a short set together, regardless of problems.
NO REPLY AT ALL IS SHIT!!
