This song isnt hard. just finding where the bass comes in because i know the guitar is in 7/8 and the drums and bass are in 4/4 another hard part is finding what the key is because usually in prog they dont play straight minor or major they are usually dealing with modes and i figured out that this song is in E harmonic minor because it has all the notes of the E minor except a flat 7 and thats what harmonic minor is except there are key changes there is one to A minor and b flat diminished.
actually on this the guitar sounds like 4/4 but on the record its 7/8 sorry about my last message people under estimate me as a musician a lot and when i get started on talking about theory and stuff like that i cant stop talking oh and by the way did you know anything about what i was talking about in my last comment because what you said made assume you knew a lot about this stuff
@TheIllegalKind - Actually I do play drums but would never claim to say this song "isn't hard". Sometimes you have to get beyond just the notes and realize there is something called feel going on here. To some people want to just analyze the notes but it's your hands that are going to make the song what it is. I highly doubt there are a ton of guitarists that can pull off what Belew does in terms of spontaneity and originality. Most could play the notes but will it sound the same?
@marsax73 thats not what i meant by notes i forgot to say you need good dynamics and feel this song to make it sound good all together i wouldnt say its easy but not as difficult as some other crimson songs no crimson song is easy its just more easy compared to others
@TheIllegalKind You are correct. In terms of complexity, it is not as bad but KC is all about emotion, improv and feel. Without question, Levin has an amazing touch not easily duplicated. I admire them for putting out challenging music and that's why I was down on the 2 dislikes.
I lost my King Crimson virginity to this and the other equally oddly named tracks on the same video. Summer 1992. Blew the top of my head clean off. Took a few years before I was ready to get with the KC program, in time for Thrak. For this video, I thought I was watching aliens play what my host called "avant garde jazz." I just called it damned weird!
I love Bruford's setup. Very unconventional. I never would've guessed that he was playing an Octoban on songs like this and Frame by Frame. It's the one that sounds like a bongo. He also likes to "ride" a roto-tom. He gets a timbale sound out of it. Where most drummers would use a cymbal to keep time on, Bruford uses roto-toms and Octobans. No rules. Just great music.
This brings back experience in a music store in summer 1992. This concert was playing on the TV in the background and I stood there mesmerized at this and other tracks w odd titles—Matte Kudesai, Thela Hun Gingeet, Elephant Talk, Sartori in Tangier, Larks' Tongues in Aspic. Man, I thought I landed on a different planet! And watching Belew molest that guitar with behind the nut raking and feedback and all the bends...was too much for my 18 year old mind. Shop guy said it was avante garde jazz.
If rhythm were a weapon of war, Bruford & Levin would wear down the enemy with an intensely relentless pursuit that pounds you into the ground until you're dust
Belew was born with a label on his chest that says "front man". Who is his guitar influence... besides nobody but himself? Neck bends, feedback, nut breaching & who knows what else... all tastefully & artistically done
@theevilfed Oh i see. I think the worst one there is Levin lol His shirt is quite small with the boots. BUT the music is great and it was the 80's so it's alllll good lol
Nope - Tony Levin is still making the bass and Chapman Stick do amazing things - with numerous bands ...
The person you are thinking of is Simon Rimmer - who has been a professional chef since at least the late 80s, and (as far as I can tell) has never played bass (or any other instrument) professionally.
@batterycock - Umm, Uh uh. While there IS a bald guy on that show, it is not Tony Levin. Look Tony up on the web. He just came off tour with HoBoLeMa (Levin, Allan Holdsworth, Pat Mastelotto, and Terry Bozio last year
@simpstm Oh yeah, you were the only one buddy! I got to see them on this tour in Toronto and Montreal for 'Beat.' I didn't go alone and there were lots of other people at the shows. I have a 'Stolen From Tony Levin' pick from the 'Beat' show or maybe it was Peter Gabriel at the same venue in Montreal. There wasn't a huge void for any kind of Rock N' Roll back then and just some tacky pop.
