Addiction is a terrible affliction, especially in families, and it effects everybody involved. I had a friend that suffered, and still suffers, with an addiction to opiates, It started with heroin and is currently at the pill & booze stage, and he lost jobs due to stealing and inappropriate behavior at work, family due to stealing & lying to support his habit and friends. In the end you can only help so much. My heart goes out to Mr Barris and all that have ,or are, experiencing this terrible issue
The sad part about addiction and substance abusers is that you CAN'T help them, even though you love them and, as a concerned and loving parent, want to sincerely help them! But the sad truth is that, in the end, if the individual that you care about, or love, is struggling with, or in the grip of, an addiction the only person that can truly help them is themselves and they have to truly want to get help otherwise you will waste time, tears & money.
Chuck Barris, Bob Stewart, and Jay Wolpert are probably the only surviving game show creators from the golden age of TV who are still with us. Jack Barry, Dan Enright, Mark Goodson, Bill Todman, Merv Griffin, Bill Carruthers, Ralph Edwards, just to name a few have gone on to the big bonus game in the sky.
I used to love the Gong Show in the 70's, still think he's a great guy, it takes a lot to own up to ones faults and msitakes, shame that someone who has brought so much fun into other peoples lives has suffered so much.
You know, if you think about it, "The Gong Show" was the seed that eventually led to the tree called "America's Got Talent"...Chuck Barris was a genius.
I got to meet Chuck Barris in Bowling Green, KY when he did a small book tour promoting his book. He spoke to us about Della and his mistakes, but I got the impression that he was too busy with his game shows and his production company to be bothered with her. When he told us when she wanted to leave at 16 and he let her have a lot of money and let her go, I just shook my head and I think a lot of people did as well. Sad sad story and a very somber event.
I met him too I still have the photo of us together and he was very shy in person, but I didn't know what was going on in his life I am speechless to what I have found out about him, and TOUGH LOVE IS A NO NO!
Chuck don't beat yourself up. You must forgive yourself you're one of the most earnest, genuine and great guy's I've known. It's great to hear you debunk the "tough love" crap. Your ideas about Della were a little mixed up, not out of indifference but love She was a kid in the 70’s. I remember you in your Rolls in the Shubert Theatre making out with Red in the parking lot, racquetball, Du-Par’s. Please, for a friend celebrate her life and have your book and tell the world, what to do and not 2
So sorry that such a vibrant wonderful girl as Della passed away, Chuck, there is much sorrow in your life that no time can heal. Chuck, wishing you peace of mind...

Barris is still living as far as I know. If he had passed on, the media would have reported it by now.

Thank you Chuck for ushering in the next level of moral depravity for American consumption. God have mercy on your soul.

Della was so sweet. If I were Chuck I'd be just as choked about losing her too. :-(
