This scene doesn't end here. A lioness climbed the tree and fought a fierce battle with the Leopard there. She won, but got self killed going down the tree. Then she was cannibalized by its lion fellows. The leopard scaped later.
Leopards naturally are faster and stronger, certainly more intelligent than hyenas, or usually on similar rank, however because they don't hunt in packs like lions or are not as formidable as tigers- they cannot afford injury.
As solitary predators they sustain themselves on injury-free lives, so when confronted they'll resort to sacrificing whatever is in their possession that the other predator wants.
@kickassberrow Hyenas are neither cats nor dogs. They belong to their own family, the Hyaenidae, which also includes the aardwolf. This family is more closely related to cats than to dogs. The order Carnivora, to which the cat, dog and hyena families all belong, is divided into two branches, the Feliformia (cat-like) families, and the Caniformia (dog-like) families. The Feliformia branch includes cats, hyenas, civets and genets, and mongooses
@portinaribe No. Hyenas in fact get most of their kills off of hunting. Stop spreading false information. You can google these facts yourself. In fact, the male lion is probably a much bigger scavenger than a Hyena. Female lions always do all the work, only to have the male come in and snatch their food.
I always liked to leopard and thought that the three cats were underdeveloped stronger the lion tiger and leopard, also thought that the three he won the hyena
why would i fight over other predators if i still hav the chance to stay away with them, its not about agressiveness sometimes it's about timing..that's a leopard.
I just wanna know how the animals never seem to notice humans...i mean it's not natural to have a big spot light at like 2 am in the wild...this people get tons of video shots and everything...I'm sure it's hours of footage of when things go wrong...like animals sneakin up on them...I mean they can smell humans...so why would they come close?...I think sometimes humans kill animals to let prey come get filmed...
Very good points. It amazes me too. Maybe it's just a sign that this kind of intrusive tourism is reaching saturation point.
And you're probably right, in some cases, that some animals may be killed by people just to attract predators for footage. It's not unethical - the bodies aren't wasted, the animal's killed v. quickly. I just wouldn't do it though. There's something wrong about it. Invasive on something which is not our 'right' or domain, or such like.
@kkdb22 no but you can actually see them standing there in the midst of it all. I would not be caught dead standing in the middle of a confrontation between hyenas and lions.
They cut and paste the footage!! It's a common practice in wildlife footage to make viewers think they are watching one event when actually they've cut and pasted different videos together...
how do u film something like this?? The camera angles are insane, and during some parts u can see a camera man right next to the kill, even wit the lions closing in.
hyenas should thank the stars that leopards are solitary hunters. cuz if they lived and hunted in groups, they'd soon become the apex predator in africa. And lions should be grateful that leopards usually dont even grow to half their size. Cuz if a leopard even became half the size of a lion/lioness it can pretty much stand up to it b/c leopards are immense strong for their size, much more than lions.
true, but a leopard is perfect just the way it is.
it's a stealth, ambush hunter, with a succes-rate beyond that of any other big cat. and it has it's kills stolen much less often then other predators, save lions packs.
being in groups would only slow it down. you can't much ambush multiple enemies per hunt, but with a pack you do need more food, bad idea.
and more size would mean less stealth.
they are also the only non-endangered big cat. they are perfect just as they are.
It didn't want to risk serious injuries. Hyenas have very powerful jaws and people always stereotype them for being weak and pathetic when lone hyenas have been recorded to take prey items as large as a wildebeest. Leopards hunt alone. A serious injury from a hyena can impair its hunting and can eventually make it starve. Leopards arent social animals. They live solitary lives.
@kkdb22: Maybe you don't know, but there's been NUMEROUS reports of hyenas attacking AND killing humans. A lone hyena has been recorded to take down prey the size of a wildebeest. You are stereotyping them as weak animals, when lone rogue hyenas can live fine, even as a single individual, without a pack. Sure, meals are harder to get, but when they get a chance, they'll go for it. A hyena can't jump on the backs of prey items; leopards can.
@kkdb22: That's why leopards can take larger prey items than hyenas. Jumping on a prey item's back allows the animals to get easier access to the animal's jugular, and make it harder for the prey item to shake the leopard off. Also, to contracdict yoru statement about wolves; solitary wolves have been known to take prey as large as a caribou.
@BHHerper ok hyenas get scared easily somewhat. Watch 1 of the vids of hyneas vs lions, hynea killed by lion, or something. There were 2 males lions and about 10-15 hyneas. N hyneas still couldnt kill the lions and 1 of the lions killed that single hynea.
@kkdb22: They don't get scared all the time. The reason why they run away is because they're asking for more trouble than they wanted. When they go after a leopard, it's not for the reason that they want to kill the leopard; they want the food. Running away from something doesn't necessarily mean they cant kill it. Hippos run away from lions when they lions try to keep pooling right on top of the hippo.
@kkdb22: The hippos carrying a whole carpool of lions on its back, because it doesnt want to waste energy on a whole pride of lions. A hippo can easily kill a lion on the spot, but they dont- its a waste of energy.
@kkdb22; Also, the lions only managed to kill the hyena because it was 1 against 2. The other hyenas didn't want to risk losing members from their group, but one hyena was left behind. And also, I don't think you watched the whole video. I know FOR A FACT that there's a video out there that was edited, so it looked like the hyena was easily killed. I want you to type in "2 Lions kills Hyena" and click on the first video.
@BHHerper i seen this many times n that was the vid that i was talkin about. But you gotta be honest, a single hyena cnt defeat/kill a single male adult lion right? I think the hyena cnt
@kkdb22: I'm not saying one can. I'm saying that they can't be misjudged as being weak and pathetic animals, without a pack. They are powerful hunters and there was a hyena who massacred 9 people and injured 15, all in 1 night, in a village in Africa. I'm not saying they are the strongest animals on the planet, but people underestimate their strength.
@kkdb22: A leopard and hyena matched up to one another will make a good match. They weigh approximately the same, with the hyena being slightly heavier on average, but the leopard achieving sizes greater than the largest hyenas.
@kkdb22; There was 2 male lions on top of a single hyena, and still, the hyena managed to survive for over a minute, giving one of the lions a bite to the upper jaw.
Well, you got to consider crocodiles too, unless you're referring to the order of mammals, known as Carnivora, instead of carnivores in general. But anyway, yeah, hyenas are great hunters, too. It's just the idiots that stereotype them as being pathetic thieves.

hehe funny its the balance of life hyenas like to steal meats from other predators and lions steal the meat from the hyenas :P and somehow the leopard gets the victory xD
Awesome ! The Hyenas are very hard to respect, and lions seems to agree on this with a heartfelt passion. Animals can´t love or hate - but sometimes I wonder if not lions hate hyenas a little bit.. anyway :-)

I was on a Safari in Africa in 1998, when I got stranded away from the other members of our group ...
I was set upon by about 6 or 7 Hyena's ... I thought I was dead for sure, with no weapon available ....
Quick thinking saved my life ...
I quickly threw out half a dozen "Guy walks into a bar ..." jokes ...
And when the hyena's started laughing, I slipped away into the jungle.

I think a leopard could take on a male hyena but not a female.

Awesome ! The Hyenas are very hard to respect, and lions seems to agree on this with a heartfelt passion. Animals can´t love or hate - but sometimes I wonder if not lions hate hyenas a little bit.. anyway :-)
