  • @tommartyn wat u were tell that guy before this conversation

  • @tommartyn i understood that

  • @Trebuer22

    hahah, what?

  • thats a 80 model body

  • @corey15469

:) no, it isnt. Hahah, 1979-1983 is this bodystyle. 82-83 have different grills/headlights/instrument panel.

Your misunderstanding, is because when i first got this 83 4x4, i was disgusted by the 83 grill and square headlights, so i took them out, and put in the ones from my 79 2wd. That grill was only used on 79-81 2wd trucks. 4x4s always have different, tougher looking grills. I prefere the 2wd grills personally.

  • @corey15469

    Got that? :)

  • She ain't dead yet,you too easy on her.don't be afraid to try harder!

  • @HmongGuitarPlayer

:) haha, i never said it was dead :)

  • Now THAT is a fucking truck!!! Not these pussy ass big boys riding around jacked up on shiny suspensions.. It's prob just as well they don't take them off road, though. Cause' they sink in as soon as they touch mud!! LOL...

  • @bliglum

hahah :) damn fucking right man! :) You need something small, lightweight that you can beat the living shit out of without worring about it. :) Thats where the fun is.

  • Destroy!! Destroy!!!

  • @989enry

    Romp Romp Romp!

  • fucking nice bed lolol

  • Ya I love the old 1st gen toyota 4x4. Now I have a 1989 Nissan 4x4 pickup (i love it, its great) and I would love to sell it for an old straight axle Toyota, but they are so hard to find in nice shape! And I'm not gonna give up my nice Nissan for an old rust bucket Toyota with a billion miles on it...

  • @RideRed1994

I hear ya man. Nissan's are really nice too man. We had an 87, and it was seriously un killable. Believe me, we tried :)

  • If im not mistaken, didn't '83s have square headlights and a different grille?

  • @RideRed1994

Unfortunately thats true man. Good eye! When i got this, i had a parts 79 2wd pickup, and i took the grill and headlights/bezels from that for this. The cut outs were the same for the headlights, and the holes were there for the round headlight brackets, just no nuts welded on. So i got 6 nuts and bolts. I had to splice the wires together for the lights, because the plugs were different. But other then that, easy swap :) And man, made it look a million times better.

  • @RideRed1994

The 79-81 (circle headlight style) grills had 2 different styles. 2wd, and 4wd. This is the 2wd which i prefer. The 4wd grill is sopposed to look tougher, a little bulkier, not so fine lined like the 2wd. I think the square headlight years had different grills for 2wd and 4wd as well.

Also, the gauges are different for the square headlight ones, i tried to put the 79 cluster in, but the plugs were different for that as well :(

  • what tire size r u runnin?

  • @146DEMO

I think they were about 31 inches tall. Maybe closer to 32

  • @tommartyn thanks man

  • @tommartyn do you remember what backspacing on the rims?

  • you must hate that truck!

  • @davidcbates

Yeah, i can't stand how awesome it is :)

  • i would love to see this driver behind the wheel of a monster truck during freestyle!!

  • @scojakracing

haha, something bad might happen. it would be fun though

  • There'll never be another truck like the 83 Hilux...

  • @Hanswurst27278

I'm really partial to the 79-81. 81 specifically because it was the first year with the 22r, which is somewhat more of a beast then the 20R. But the 81 has the circle headlights and awesome grill like the 79 and 80, the 82 and 83's have the square headlights, different grill, and different gauges, which just isn't really my style. The 82-83 front end looks like a cherokee. The grill and headlights i put on this 83 was from my 79 2wd truck. 2wd and 4wd are different grills.

  • @tommartyn

well, those details are the frosting on the Awesome-Cake that is the Hilux!

  • @tommartyn Nothin wrong with Cherokees now :-P

  • @Droiddest

As long as they are stick, and not powered by the gm 2.8l then they are cool machines. :). But the toyotas are their own awesome trucks, and had their own incredible front end before they started looking like cherokees. They just shouldn't have done it. Luckily its easy to convert them to the pre - 82 stlye front end. Get that Toyota look back

  • @tommartyn The sticks a bit hard to satisfy seeing as thats only about 1 in 20. Believe me I'm always looking for sticks lol.

  • @Droiddest

Yeah man :) they're hard to find. My friend janet has one with the 4.2L (pretty sure) and the Puguet (spelling?) 5 speed trans in it. Fun to drive, Trans feels week though :) Manual says you can only plow snow with the auto trans. The manual isn't strong enough. But still, its way more fun to drive :)

  • Comment removed

  • @tommartyn Yeah the Puke goat is worth its weight in cardboard, but I'd argue that the AX-15 (5spd used after that and for the rest of its years aside from from 00-01s) is as strong as the AW4, aka indestructible.

  • @Droiddest

hahah :) I've never driven one with the newer 5 speed. glad to know they had a stronger trans! :) They are really fun machines

  • whats left of that bed you got there haha but toyota ftw hands down!

  • @TheFreakyfixed87

:) hahah, yeah, over the years it pretty much naturally turned itself into a flat bed. Toyota's are beasts man :)

  • do that in your chevy, (and keep doing it)

  • @MrFilthyMcnasty1

    What do you mean?

  • @tommartyn those little toyota trucks will go more places than most chevy 4x4's and take alot more abuse and less maitenance

  • @MrFilthyMcnasty1

:) oh, i gotcha man :) yep, true true. They can't haul as much weight as american trucks, or as easily, but thats about it.

Stock for stock they will go more places then any american truck, hands down.

  • just take off the bed!!! And wht type of tires?

  • just take off the bed!!!

  • whats the box lenght on your 83 toyota?

  • @dodgedieselrebel

That was the long bed, so it was a 7 and 1/2 foot long bed. I think the standard bed's are 5 foot something. The shortbed's are better for romping though, because the wheel base is a little shorter, and less bed hangs past the rear wheels. Plus they're probably a little lighter, and thats always important for romping.

  • thanks for the info, tommartyn

  • thats a hurtten unit

  • @18SARA81

    it could use some repairs

  • That is an 1980 Toyota round headlights and look at the Grill I am sure and it does have a 20R in it I have one and it is my favorite truck.7 inches of lift weber carb and an ignigter off a 1985 toyota Ignigter are the first thing to go on 20 R engines. And you can't find them easy.

  • @hubhunts

Good eye man! I think only one other person has commented about the grill/headlights i took off my 79 2wd for this thing. Thats a 2x4 grill by the way, the 4x4's are different.

Yep, its an 83. I hate square headlights though, and had a 79 2wd with 90,000 miles on the 20r. I put the facelift on right away, and put the 20r in a few years late when the 22r finally went. Now its in my woods waiting for me to finish bolting up the 87 22r i dropped in.

    79-81 had round headlights.

  • @tommartyn The round headlights were the first thing i noticed. I like the round better than square too. but why would you waste time putting those on that truck

  • @sethicania

haha, well, i put that front setup on a few years before this footage. before all the rust showed its ugly head, and the bed fell apart and all. I'll send you a video of when i first put it on the road, which was about a year after i got it.

  • @tommartyn I had an 81 and loved it. It had a 3" lift. I flipped it and it was trashed. It was a beast

  • @sethicania

Ah man, yeah, i could see that destroying it pretty good. I hope the engine and trans got reused, alot of people need those. and that was the 1st year for the 22R. I had an 81, stock, and the thing was amazing. it was an SR5, so it had awesome sr5 pinstriping, sticker type stuff on it, a tach, stereo radio, sr5 steering wheel, thing was awesome :) I didn't realize it but it had serious frame rot, and after a few years in the field, broke in half.

  • @tommartyn Hey man, Do you remember? How hard was it to change those lights out?

  • @sethicania It was super easy to change the headlights, the healight bezels, the marker lights that are in them, and the grill. All the holes are there for everything, the grill just screws right in, and the bezels too, but the headlight holders have to be bolted on. each side has 3 holes in the perfect spot for them, but you have to buy bolts. 3 3/4 inch long 1/4 inch wide bolts with a nut for each side and you're good. 1984 and up is a completely different body style and it won't work.

  • You guys should've gotten the one taillight working just for shits n' giggles.

  • @brapboys503

:) haha, yeah, probably would have been pretty easy, maybe just needed bulbs. Would have been funny

  • @tommartyn Yeah it would've.

  • the toyota pickups are like the cockroachs of the auto world, they'll be the last ones standing lol

  • @llMAINLUNATICll

hahah, damn right man :) These bitches are incredible :) some company, that i think is in africa, was buying all the old toyota's from around here a few years ago, maybe still are. they would come in and cut them in half, and just buy the front ends :) ship them over and i guess put other rear ends on them.

  • Crappy Toyota ever

But looks like you are having a lot of fan

Good for you man. Rock on!!

I will take it, if still free.

  • @007ayala

    Thanks man!

Nah i like it a lot. I got it for free, but wouldn't give it away.

  • I love how it looks like crap...but the engine starts like, no problem, and it sounds like its running good....gotta love those old yota's

  • @captaincrunch69

Definitely gotta love these beasts! they are incredible for sure!

  • only thing that stopped my 81 was a log in a mud hole bent the tie rod out bad. I think your missing a tail light.

  • @kvhemiboy

:) yeah, they are pretty unstoppable. Lucky tie rods are replaceable.

I don't know man, it passed inspection :)

  • The troll under that bridge oughta maintain his road a little better.

  • @chrisdjonestube

:) yeah, that guys slacking, for sure.

  • The Toyos in this country are now living off those older Toyos reputatiuon.I had a 06 4x4 tundra the shittiest truck I ever had.Now Im running a 09 3500 Duramax and Im keeping it forever.

  • @jmac5058

Yeah, i'm sure the newer ones aren't made nearly as well as these old beasts. These were the complete package right here :) Minus the insane power the Duramax has. But these things were the best.

The main guy at toyota recently, and sadly appologized to people for any problems or poor workmanship and engineering that people may have experienced. He says the company started growing too fast... And they feel shame about it. Ask GM if they give a shit if they make a shitty car.

  • my celica has a 20R

  • i miss my old 83 toyota...... best truck i ever had

  • @thatkidsmokin

They are incredible machines man, for sure.

  • Japanese people....

  • @fawnknudsen

Hey, i checked out your profile, and you seem to have a strong ability to describe things in alot of depth, with words i never hear or see usually, and it seems like there is alot of meaning, and also fun with the way you write. SO, i was wondering if you could elaborate on the 2 comments you left. I'm interested for sure :)

I could make a lot of guesses, but i think they'd all be wrong

  • @tommartyn I stated "Japanese people...." with an ellipses, which denotes that I purposefully removed content; to say, to the reader, that the content is omitted on purpose. Meaning, the reader should be able to infer what I am saying after watching your video upload.

  • be easy to load a deer on that bed...

  • @Opium323 J

be easier with a 2wd toyota, the beds sit a few feet lower on those.

  • and it still starts first crank

  • @ripper3494

Yeah :) that thing always started right away. A little quicker to start when it was cold though :)

  • @tommartyn thats wat i love about the 4 cyls, my wrangler has a 4 banger and it always starts first time, show me another engine that does that after bein beatin to shit and is old lolz

  • @ripper3494

Nice! Some day i really want to get a wrangler with a 4cyl.

I do have the 46 willys with the 4cyl, but that was the only engine they had in them :) 60HP man :)

  • ha this video made my day. toyota for life.

  • @hostilerosstyle

hell yeah man, toyota for life :)

  • you shud of used a pos ford...fords suck

  • i think he is just not careful and he looses them in the creek. i recall him losing his penis too lol

  • @AcaAllertor127

true true. he has trouble keeping track of things. Last night he did a kamakazi into the creek with a bolens in the crazy rain storm. he didn't know it was the creek, went full throttle into it, tractor went straight down, and so did he then he flipped up side down, landed on the ground with his back, and the tractor flipped forward and slammed into him. then fell over. some how, he's ok.

  • 1:12 free balls? mike must be interested in that deal lol

  • @AcaAllertor127

haha, Free Balloons, thats what it said originally. Yeah, mikes always in the market for some new balls, being that his are always falling out.

  • iv seen this vid like 100 times and i just want that truck

  • @MrJjj55

haha, me too :) I just ripped a 22r out of an 85 2wd, that we're going to put in this thing. Re power the beast. the 20R i put in it, blew the head gasket... :(

  • @tommartyn shit that sux i just got rid of a 84 nissan 4x4 king cab that my frind blue the motor in

  • @MrJjj55

aw man, THAT sucks. Those things are pretty awesome too. even though they're independent front suspension. it looks kinda stupid, but it really does pretty well.

Which engine was it? the 4cyl or the 3L V6

  • @tommartyn 4cyl 2.4 whith headers and dule exsost 4 inch lift 32.s in the back 31.s up front 5 speed and i had 4 kc lights on top i had over 1500 in it and got 200 for it

  • @MrJjj55

:( son of a bitch, that sucks. Did you try to sell it with all that stuff on it? Frame was probably rotted out i guess, they normally are. taller tires in the back?? :) Trying to blow up your transfercase? i guess as long as you only used 4x4 in the mud, or snow it wouldn't hurt anything. I think on our 87 nissan we had one huge tire on the back left , but that thing was a field beater, didn't matter if it blew u the transfer case. Seen vids of ours?

  • @tommartyn the frame was not al rusted and thows were the only tires i had for it and i drive it to work and mud and a lil rock. i have seen a lot of ur vids thare good most of them i hate the ones when u kill old dodges thow but other than that not bad

  • @MrJjj55

That must have been cool to drive that around, and romp it. Thats how it was when i had this truck on the road. i loved every second of it.

Glad you like most of our vids. We've never killed an old dodge :) from what i can tell, they're unkillable. My two road trucks right now are 2 red shortbed dodge pickups, 2wd, one slant 6 and stick, other v8 and auto. Just fired up the 65 dart tonight, and cruised slowly around the field for a while. Putting new engine in this toyota tonight

  • @tommartyn yhaa me to sept the spedo didant work and i got it inpandied the first day i got it haha passed a cop when he was goin 70 haha and didant u have that vid whith that ramcharger getin all fucked up the black one???? how many motors have u put in that old yota??

  • @MrJjj55

haha, nice :) Yeah, the cop must have been pretty happy about that.

I have a vid where i'm reving the piss out of a black 84 ramcharger, and its smoking like crazy, i think the valve seals went bad, like my new 318, it smokes alot too. But revving it didn't kill it. I just never started it again. The drivetrain was broken, and i had to get rid of it, so i took the carb and intake off. Its crazy, this 83's gonna be on its 4th engine. with 154K miles. My 81 4x4 had 270K Original

  • @tommartyn oh yhaa so happy he towd it haha sweet yhaa dodge dont like to die lol . hay what state u live in?

  • @MrJjj55

I'm in eastern pa. Where abouts are you?

  • @tommartyn mesa AZ

  • I love toyotas! I got stuck and was partially submerged in water for several hours, and it ran fine when out. How do these older stucks stand up? Do the frames have any trouble with rust after so many years? anything I should check out before I buy one?

  • @WoodcockMichael

    Hey!

Yeah, this one in the video was left overnight in my flooded woods, and the water went well up over the engine through the night. a few days later, i pulled the plugs, cranked the engine till the water came out, changed the oil, and drove the bastard out :) running fine :) I love them too! :)

The frames do have rust over the years. always check the frame where the bed meets the body. as long as it looks and feels solid when you hit it with a hammer, Buy it up :)

  • @WoodcockMichael

they also rust out where the rear shocks hook up to the frame. up under the bed. if you can weld, some of the rust can be fixable. the outside of the frame is the thick part, so if the inside part is rusted out, that could be patched with some good metal, and give years more use :) The front brakes on the ones i've had have been 4 piston calipers. 2 on each side of the rotors, and on my one, all were seized up except 2 tiny ones. one on each side of the truck :)

  • you got the toyotas, you got the cool hair cut so.... wheres the bitches?!!!!

  • @adammotox

hahaha, :) never thought about it like that before. I guess it doesn't work like that. :) And being that all the toyota's are broken right now, and i'm starting to develop a bald spot at 26, its not looking good for the future either :)

  • @tommartyn haha oh well. fix them up and get after it, love your videos reminds me of me and my retarded friends. haha! yotas 4 life!!!

  • i used to have a 86 turbo charged toyota truck just like this.

lasted forever and i gave it hell the entire time.

the truck did things i thought trucks couldnt do.

  • @deadjoey77

:) thats awesome man. Thats what its all about. and thats exactly what toyota's do. What you'd expect they can't. and what others can't.

Very cool that your 4x4 was turbo. i didn't know they put the turbo's on any 4x4's. That has to rock. :)

  • @tommartyn

ya it was the 2nd engine. the guy b4 more put it in. was pretty fast for a torquie 5 speed truck. beat my friends kia rio hahaha. it inspired me to get another toyota. i own a 07 corolla s 5 speed. but i miss my truck, i remember going uphill through the woods in 3 feet of snow in a blizzard with no problem. best truck/car ive ever owned in my life.

  • man for an old junk like that, its got preety decent power !! put a diff lock on that and see wat happens !

  • @errorserver3000

Thanks man! yeah, thats one of our plans for this thing.

  • @tommartyn Np bro ... I wanna drive that it looks fun

  • Awesome video and tough truck.

  • love your truck

  • @thewhoissuperb24

We ride on a whole shitload. but the part with the pile is on my grandmothers land, then we ride all around on the neighbors land as well. Most of the creek stuff is on theirs.

  • that thing is beat to shitt haha least its a straight axle

  • the ONLY problem with these old toyota trucks were the frames breaking in half behind the cab and on front of the back tire. BUT you could prevent this by cleaning the frame out every so often.. but its too late. Live long Toyota FTW!

  • hell ye bro thats why they call is yota cause it lastys forever.. but your clutch might not lol

  • ghetto truck

  • Ghetto-ass truck

    you know m ssayin?

  • The solid front axles and leafs are a dying breed in Toyota Trucks. You can mount plows on them and the frame won't scrape the ground like on newer trucks.

  • yeah, i really wish they'd never switched over like that... I always like it when a truck sits level. You can fit 33's under these stock 79-83 Toyota's. the rub a little turned all the way, but just barely.

  • A suspension lift is simple in the Toy's with the leafs. Put the leafs over the axle. Now with the coil springs, someone will have to buy larger coils.

  • do you still have this beast

  • i've got a few trucks, but right now just the willys Jeep is working. I still have this beast, but it needs the head resurfaced, and checked for cracks. i'm going to get that done when i get some money. :)

  • how many trucks di you have that you romp on o by the way u fuckin rock

  • nothin beats a toyota.. hands down most bang for the buck

  • You know it! :)

  • Very nice, way to use the yotas. I have a 83 with a 5 speed and a 22r, only has 119 thousand on it, and I just bought a 79 with a 20r and a weber carb. Gonna make the 79 my rock crawler

  • Thanks! awesome! How much was the 79? Is the 79 a 5 speed?

  • I gave the guy 300 for it, and all it needed was some fresh gas and a battery and i was in the mud and rocks in no time flat! Yes it is a 5 speed, but i think the transfer case is the wrong one for it

  • Thats a great deal! 300 bucks, can't beat it. Thats weird, whats up with the transfercase. I think it should be just like the one in the 83. Don't know for certain though. 79 was the first 4wd year. things might have been different. the front axle should not have extra welded support around the pumpkin like the later years

  • is that manual transmission?

  • doesnt rust come standard on many toyotas?

  • haha, Definitely came standard on the bed of this toyota! and in the middle of the frame on 2 other ones i have...

  • this HISTORIC toyota truck :)

  • :) Yes it is :)

  • how many u got and wat years and can u give me 1 with auto transmission and xtra cab for some trails/rock crawling? preferably 22rte engine

  • haha, preferably the most powerful of the R family eninges toyota used huh? wow. you don't ask for much! :) Yeah, automatics suck dick, and no 4 wd toyota should EVER be auto. thats an insult to the awesome trucks. the years of toyotas i have didn't have extra cabs, or 22rte engines.

  • rock crawling auto pratical a must, unless your have 3 legs to ba;ane clutch, brake, and gas. but yea sticks are better overall

  • It might make the rock crawling thing easier, but its still just not worth it. You can hit the brake with your heel, and the gas with your toes :) Why do you want a turbo for rock crawling? wouldn't it be kinda not used much, what with the lower rpm's and all?

  • true, but thee fuel injection is a must. for me at least.

  • I've never had a 22R with fuel injection, but my friend andrew brown just got an 87 or 88 or something 4x4 22RE and it's deffinatly awesome :) Had alot of fun with carburated 22r's though. the 20R carb's are crap, but the ones on 22R's are very well made :)

  • idk where u are, but hteres this place in pico riviera where they have nothing but japanese engines, they have plenty of the 22r and 22re, they might do a trade.

  • I'm in eastern PA. Nice! Unfortunatly, around here, all the 22R type toyota's were bought up from all the junk yards, and they cut the frames at the cab, and shipped all the front ends to africa. where they weld them on old back ends i guess. the junk yards said that they were being paid alot! but its sad for people like around here, who have old toyota's.

  • from wat i here, toyotas are sought after more than landrovers ij africa. some guy i knew was in africa doing something idk wat, but the vehicle of choice were toyota trucks. on the of some of them it said "Land Rover recovery vehicle".

  • hahah, yeah it is! :) thanks!

  • very nice man. i want a beater toyota so that i can turn it into a bush truck, they just go and go no matter how hard you beat on it . check out my 1982 yoter its in a little bit better shape then your 83 here . but it has also had over $12 000 into it, and now its good for another 30 plus years.

"my toyota wont get stuck it only gets delayed"

  • Awesome! i'll have to check that out :)

That is great man! as long as you take care of any rust that starts, the thing will go forever... Very cool, THAT is an investment. as far as vehicles go, that will be well worth the 12,000 bucks. Very cool man :)

  • was that picture taken when u got it because it looked really nice but not anymore thanks to u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yep, it was from the next day after i got it, but a few minutes after i swapped out the incredibly ugly and horrible 83 4WD grill (which looks just as hidious as an older jeep cherokee) squar headlights and everything.... with the grill and headlights from a 2WD 79 toyota with circle headlights! :)

the guy i got if from drove it into the ground, never fixxed anything, the bed was completly rotten under the cap and bedliner, (thats why it fell apart for me) and he had blown the head gasket

  • ya i thought it was a pretty good deal man, you have to run it between 2 and 4hi, not quite egaged into either one, he says he has to run it like that for years. Ya the front axle is kinda similar to my 83. i'm workin on dovetailin it and narrowin the nose now, i'll go full 4 link and coil springs

  • and he would just drive it untill it overheated and shut off, then he would sit and wait till it cooled enough to start... the guy was killing it for years. then it broke down, and he let it sit in his drive way. he would have junked it (and it would have got crushed at the junk yard) but i found it, and said i'd take it off his hands. then we fixxed the poor 22R, i drove it till that broke, then we put the 20R in it, and the head gasket went in that, because of some rust issues

  • in way ur right but could u not have saved it?

  • i couldn't have. im not the greatest mechanic, and i really don't have much money at all. and it would have took alot of money. theoreticallly its not really worse off now then when i got it. it needed a bed then, and the window on the drivers door was broken then too. and the engine shot. this one needs a head gasket. not hard to fix. needs front callipers, probably rear break stuff too. other then that its not really doing bad at all. Spedometer cable.

  • thats one awesome and awesome looking work horse

  • haha, yeah, for a free truck, the thing is really incredible.

  • gotta love ole toyotas

  • how many yoters do you have?

  • right now i'm at...

    6

i've had around 12 total. not all trucks though, some corolla's, tercels and a celica thrown in there.

  • thats one big heap of shit

  • Ha man you should go get dodge ramcharger. and show them how its done.lol

  • I would, but the trailduster is broken... :(

  • toyota p/u's are so awesome one of my friends (cooldan1990) wants to buy an 89 2wd for $400

  • they are incredible! yeah, he should get that thing! for sure. 22R! insane awesome trucks. 2wd's are fast! and fun.

  • does that say free ill take it lol
