you are right it is all interpretation but closed mindedness to that of the imagination of a child for I was once that child with that kind of imagination in a broken home. I can see the story in the story. It may have been in the background to create his own version but it is what you say, interpretation. And the end result is still the end result. A child wishing his parents were together again. NOT killing the President.
THIS IS SOOOO NOT WHAT HE WANTED THIS SONG TO BE ABOUT!! did you not listen to his words??? it is about a little child missing his parents! The child IMAGINED WHATEVER it took to get their parents attention. THAT is ALL that they asked for..not killing the president..GET A LIFE PEOPLE!!
@azpatriot37 the magic of great lyrics like these is that they leave it open for either interpretation: are the events being told actually happening and the final part explains what lead him to it, or is this all going on in his mind.
@azpatriot37 if you knew anything about peter gabriel, youd know that the assasination of jfk is exactly what he would sing about. and its about him growing up neglected and he finally has the opportunity to be somebody and to be famous. all he wanted was for people to know his name, because his parents paid no attention to him. and yes we listened to the words, and the fact that everyone BUT you thinks its about the shooting, means your obviously wrong.
@azpatriot37 "Get a life"? Why even say that? What gives you the impression that whoever you are talking to has no life? Furthermore, who are you to define what a "Life" is? Your idea of life could be wildly different from someone else's. It's just a stupid thing to say, and people need to stop saying it. ESPECIALLY when discussing Peter Gabriel.
Just go with "Fuck you," or some other angry words that actually makes sense. Everybody knows what "Fuck you" means, and there's no misinterpreting.
Great video. Yes it is totally about Kennedy and Oswold. Gabriel has talked about it a few times. It now seems Gabriel was right, Oswold was just a lonely boy, but an expert markman.
CAN'T YOU PEOPLE READ? PETER GABRIEL HIMSELF SAID "THIS SONG IS ABOUT THE KENNEDYS" BEFORE HE PLAYED IT ONSTAGE IN SANTA ANA. I WAS THERE, I HEARD HIM SAY IT! ! ! WERE YOU THERE? i WAS, THAT'S WHAT HE SAID. HE WROTE THE SONG, HE CERTAINLY SHOULD KNOW WHO HE WROTE IT ABOUT. FUCK THIS SHIT ABOUT WALLACE AND QUIT TALKING OUT YOUR ASS WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. STUPID PISS-ANT KNOW-IT-ALLS. david leoni alias daleo58
This song has nothing to do with jfk or the kennedys...
The story of an assassination told from the perspective of the gunman, Gabriel got the idea for this song after reading Arthur Bremmer's book An Assassins Diary. Bremmer shot Alabama Governor George Wallace in 1972, and what fascinated Gabriel was that he didn't do it for political reasons, but for fame: Bremmer timed the shooting to get as much publicity as possible, making sure he did it in time for the early news.
excellent video. peter stated this song was about the Kennedys before he performed this at the Santa Ana Clubhouse back in 78. (Fire Marshall stopped the show after only 5 songs and peter was pissed)
Genesis was never the same after he left....and i will always hate phil for the invisable touch album...<someone should call the cops for the bad touch from that peice of crap....> but the great peter to this day still can shake your emotions... till next time peeps and peepettes... keep joking and smoking
@Waldstiem That tour was the WORST concert I seen of Genesis, more people with sweaters around thier necks than old time fans & trippers LOL,Thats the kind of following they had that started after invisible touch! Much better music and people before Invisible puke album! his solo ladi da music helped bring that crowd also. I'm glad Gabriel left because of all the great music that came from him and Genesis (up until Mama).Geneis sound changed the most when Hackett left(just my opinion) Take care!
It's funny how people say that it was Oswald who did it. If he did, he was a sorceror or something, since he was able to shoot many times from many directions.
A very powerful video. However, as others have noted, the song is really about Arthur Bremer and the shooting of George Wallace. Moreover, Bremer himself was inspired more by RFK's assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, than by Oswald. The authorities found a book on RFK's shooting that included a reproduction of Sirhan's diary in the trunk of Bremer's car. Also, in his own diary, Bremer lamented the fact that in shooting Wallace he wouldn't be as famous as Sirhan became in shooting RFK.
@raelraven2 Even more to the point is that it's a song about the assassin, not the target. I feel that's what makes it a more powerful song.
"I don't really hate you. I don't care what you do. We were made for each other, me and you." A really fantastic line that catches the essence of the song.
Gabriel is insightful and genius. He really delves deep into the human psyche on this one. It can be a painful place to be. Kudos to ncaa... for capturing the essence of the song.
This video is a GREAT fit for the Peter Gabriel song. However, it does not depict what actually happened. One of the TMWWK videos has a very good one about Oswald.
woulda coulda shoulda, it took President Nixon to get us out of Viet Nam kiddies, Nixon took the polititians out of the equation and all the sudden Jiap wanted to talk peace when we started bombing his house. 10 years of lets talk peace got us no where, 3 weeks of bombing Hanoi and THEY wanted to talk peace
Okay, maybe you're a little off on this one. JFK had sent advisors to Vietnam and at that time it was a small contingent of 10,000 soldiers to help the South Vietnamese government with the problem of the Viet Minh (who later became the Viet Cong)...all of which were to return by Christmas of that year until LBJ took office after JFKs assassination. this is just a clarification of facts. if it had not been for JFKs assassination, there probably wouldn't have been a Vietnam War. Good Song!
i would have hated to be Jackie. i mean, im a republican and all and the dems of today are different than from back then, and i have a little more respect for Kennedy because of this. i love this song too. but i dont understand what Kennedy did that was so great in office. i mean yea the Cuban Missile crisis, but he is actualy responsible for Vietnam(not to say it was a "bad" decision), and he was cheating on his wife wasnt he?
The song is about Arthur Bremer, who shot and crippled George Wallace in '72. His intention was to make a "bold statement of my manhood" to the world, and he timed the assassination attempt to hit the primetime news.
He originally planned to go after Nixon, hence the references to a presidential cavalcade. The song has nothing to do with JFK.
Indeed, it is about Bremer and Nixon and the reference to the "governor's car" refers to an incident where Bremer went to Ottawa, Ontario Canada to stalk Nixon, who was visiting Parliament. He was riding in the Governor General's car past Bremer, who was standing in a crowd, waiting to take his shot. However, the security was much too heavy that day for Bremer to get his chance, so he later began to pursue George Wallace, whom he shot in May of 1972 on the campaign trail in Laurel, Md.
Shouldn't this be George Wallace footage, not JFK footage?

Why does Peter Gabriel always get rid of the sax when he plays this live? That's like the best part of it!

Just to clear this up...
