Style lines, and horizontal body landmarks can be marked by using Pinstripe Tape, found in the automotive store, or hardware store. It comes in quite narrow widths, so in my opinion for the purpose of pattern lines, easier to get curved lines.
to make my dress form anatomically accurate I used one of my old worn out bras and stuffed it with socks, then put a tight shirt on over the form- it worked great =)
@TheMarissannette That's such a better idea than my makeshift taped-on-rolled-sock bust, haha. ;) I will have to remember that! Thanks for sharing the tip!
Yes! Please show us how you actually went about cutting this up into a dress form, that's actually where I keep having the most trouble because I'm so busty and curvy...
I would love to see how you make it into a corset pattern!! I had actually made a duct tape dress form before but never thought of using it for a corset pattern, great idea and great video!
Nicely done! I've taken 1850's sewing classes with one of the best historical seamstresses. This was her technique as well. Store bought undergarments rarely fit anyone perfectly; this is the best way to achieve an exact fit. For those who are hesitant, don't be! Wear an old, snug fitting shirt that you don't mind 'recycling'. I wouldn't suggest any other way to make a dress form or a corset! In fact, I'd use this technique to make the dress form, then make a corset and future clothing using it!
@xXKittyTVXx It's safer if someone else wraps you, and if you plan it out well it shouldn't take more than about 30 minutes. The tape won't stick to your skin if you wear a shirt underneath, and you're not supposed to wrap yourself super tight - just enough to fit your body's natural curves. Not as unhealthy as it seems.
Aww if I lived closer I would have gladly offered my services to help duct tape you. x3
Duct tape.. its such a miracle tool! I like seeing a vid of someone making one of these duct tape forms. Ive only seen picture tutorials but never thought of looking up a vid. I was thinking of making one for myself because I am a plus size and forms in my size..yikes! Thanks for the video!! <3
I would love to see the corsets you make from this also. :D
Hey, thank you so much for this video. You demonstrate and also explain well, so even though it may not be easy to see what you're doing, it's really to understand from what you say.
I would also like to see how to make this into a pattern.
Thanks, now I have something to do tomorrow! I will make two one for a direct pattern and one for a dress form, since I didn't by the one from GW. I even know what I will fill it with :D I might have to post a video
@CuteandCreepy123 Of course! That was the original idea, I just couldn't find someone willing to tape me. When someone makes a tape form of your own body, it should easily give you a custom fit pattern. :)
This is really helpful, since I have a hard time adjusting storebought patterns to fit my long torso and strange proportions.
Is sitting difficult in a long-line corset? I like the long-line styles but I'm worried that when I actually make a corset that fits me properly, I won't be able to sit because it's too low!
@v1c4r10u5 When you mark the top and bottom edges of your duct tape "figure" on your body, you'll be able to control the length of it so you'll be able to sit down. So before you cut yourself out of the tape, sit down on a hard chair and mark where your thigh meets your torso, and you'll know later that's the maximum length your corset can be. :)
This is actually how I made my very first corset's pattern - kinda. I didn't have duct tape, so I just put a really tightly fitting shirt over my dress form and drew chalk lines where I wanted the seams to be. Then I used the painter's tape method and took the pattern right off the fabric. I imagine you could do this on a person as well and just account for the reduction as usual.
i have a question, but couldn't find a matching video in your collection. So I decided to post it on you newest video:
Do you have any tricks for lacing your corset with a modesty panel, that is attached to one side of the gap on the back? Because I find it very difficult to get it to look good, cover everything and not wrinkle too much...
@Aarachne Honestly, I just push and prod the panel while I'm tightening it down so it stays even. It also helps to have someone adjust it for you during the tightening process but I know that's not always possible. I'm going to make a video on how to alter the modesty panel to keep it flat. :)
I would like to see you make the pointed cups-corset. I've tried to make one myself but the points didn't sit right, so I turned it into a straight half bust corset.
Totally jumping on the band wagon. I would love to see you turn this into a pattern. Working with busts are still a challenge for me. Would your patterns be cupped? And how would you get reduction into the pattern? Great video Lucy!
@starburs Hooray bandwagon!! Haha. Peer pressure does wonders. :P
The corset pattern won't have defined "bra-like" cups; it will be more or less a part of the rest of the pattern. Reducing the waist is a matter of very carefully shaving off a fraction of an inch off the seam of each pattern piece and tapering out the reduction to make smooth, non-dramatic curves in each seam. It's not an exact science, but does involve some measuring. It might make more sense when I show it in the next video. :)
I love watching your videos. I am a corset queen and a seamstress and designer and I use your videos to teach me new things. I would love to see how to turn this into a corset pattern. ~With love, CeCe
@clh1993 Aww thank you! ^_^ Did you go to fashion school or are you self-taught? I would love to see some of your designs! I'll post the next video when I get a chance. :)
That is AWESOME! :) I would have never thought to do that. I think I'm going to make like a dress form just for me doing that. I would like to see how to actually make that pattern doing that too. So cool!
My hubby helped me make my duct tape dress form a little while back. Advice to anyone who wants to make one: GO TO THE BATHROOM BEFORE YOU START. Very important. lol
And Lucy, I'm in the process of moving. Unfortunately, I have to move to a smaller place and am having to get rid of a bunch of my stuff so the new place isn't overflowing with crap. If you would like my Luffy plushy, you can have him. I doubt anyone in my town will know who he is at the garage sale.
Yes Please do a video on how to make the corset from the duct tape pattern. Thank you. (I am planning on making a corset for my son's fiancee for Christmas. I think this would be the best way to get her measurements)
This seems pretty easy. Have you officially made an over bust corset yet? I'm big up there, so I get confused when trying to figure out how to draft an over bust corset. This might be the best way to get the bust the most accurate. Thank you very much. : )
@CuteandCreepy123 I've made overbust corsets for my friends but not for myself. It's always easier to make corsets on other people, especially with the mockup stage (which I still need to make a video for). The overbust corsets I've made aren't for people who are particularly well-endowed so the rules are a little different there. I'll have the duct-tape-to-pattern vid up as soon as I can. :)
Do you have any tips on making the form very sturdy? I'm going to be starting work on a period gown soon, and since I don't have a form I was thinking about making my own, but the dress will be so heavy, and I want to make sure the form can stand up to the weight. I've thought about stuffing it, but I'm still not sure what would work best.
@Kouin There are different types of stuffing you can use in this. If you use the pillow stuffing or crumpled newspaper it'll be pretty soft, but if you use a dense expandable foam (you can get it in a bucket or an aerosol can) it should be more sturdy. You can also tape boning right into the form as you're creating it. Maybe if you stuff AND bone it'll keep its shape. It also might be a good idea to give it at least 3 layers of tape too!
@phoenixjodirae Thanks! The instructions have been floating around on the internet for a few years, and there were so many videos on Youtube on how to make a dressform/ mannequin out of duct tape but I didn't find a video on how to make a corset pattern. I thought I'd rectify that. :D
