this was perform on november 1994 just seven months after kurt cobain suicide. dave grohl began to perform as a part time drummer of a Tom Petty and the heartbreakers
I've always loved "The Heartbreakers" and I'm a big Grohl fan. I saw this same show on the documentary, but they played "Honeybee", and Grohl tore it up!!! They sounded so good together! Anyone Know where i can find that video?
@TomFisherMusic Dave Grohl is great but I think Tom Petty has more than earned his respect. Even someone as good as Grohl had to be honored by an invitation to join The Heartbreakers. Glad he passed because Foo Fighters are GREAT!!!
This video was right before Grohl decided to do Foo Fighters. Petty offered him the full time drummer slot and he declined to put out the first FF album.
there will always be a naysayer about dave grohl being up there with moon, bonham, the best of the rest...but geez, just wait another 20-30 yrs when dave's status IS legend...hell i'm throwing travis barker up on that pedestal too.
@wiley666 not saying he isn't good, he is. He is very good. But to compare him (actually to say he is better than) Moon and Bonham? Sorry, but you're talking about two of the greatest drummers of all time - and I don't even like The Who. Not only were they amazing, they were totally influential. I'm sorry but Grohl hasn't really done anything groundbreaking since Nirvana, and even then it wasn't like he was treading new territory. He's a very good drummer.\
@nixon08 I have no doubt he can be compare with Moon and Bonham...he's one of the best of the history he's work on Scream, Nirvana, Foo fighters (he plays all the instruments in the first album and drums on The Colour and the shape) Queen Of Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Nine Inch Nails and even in this song proves that! I hate when the people don't want to compare good musician with legends like Bonham and Moon! Time pass and new talents appears...Dave it's one of them!
Hey guys check out " Ockams Razor No Way Back Cover" on my profile. We're a band of 15 year olds from Chicago and just want to see what you guys think! Please comment!
You know how every Drummer today says that Keith moon, John Bohnam, ect. are the greatest drummers ever? well, we need to Add dave as the greatest among them

@KamikaziPanda17 really dude? he's not THAT good. He's an above average rock drummer who can hit the drums really hard. He's not even close to Moon, Bohnam, or modern era drummers like Glen Kotche, Dave King, or Zach Hill to name a few. Search for either of them on youtube and you'll be amazed at how much Dave Grohl sucks in comparison. Granted he was a perfect fit with Kurt's messy punk sound.
@nixon08 I don't think that's true. Dave King is kind of a hero for me, but I think he'd tell you that, past a certain level, drumming is as much about style as it is anything else. Dave Grohl isn't my favorite drummer or anything, but he is distinct and he knows how to play with a band. That's not just an "above average" thing to pull off.
@cykez well his friend just died and he said a lot times that he didnt want to play drums for a while due to memories with it.and he had other talents to express and thank god he went for guitar

I never got the appeal of Tom Petty at all. First off, the guy comes across as a complete poser to me. I mean WTF is with the Bob Dylan act? And second, his songs suck, plain and simple. They are boring pieces of shit. There is not one song I ever heard from this guy that I like, none of them stand out, it all sounds like pretentious garbage to me. American girl is sort of alright, but it's hardly a song that would qualify this guy for all the attention he gets.
@JamesTKirkCobain dude how does his stuff sound like pretentious? He just writes basic stuff that he likes and if has a message his pretty straight forward. And the Dylan thing he gained a lot of influence from him and he hasn't denied that at all. Also dude based on your screen name it appears you're a Nirvana fan and I'll say that they are one of the most overrated bands of all time.
@nzmaximus It was real nice at beginning and end, but like 3/4's through Dave seemed a little to hard edged. Don't get me wrong he's awesome but Petyy is mellow.
what that was was rock n roll perfection, that's what it was. and Tom new it, Dave new it, and everybody knew it. and now i know it and you know it and that's what it was back before when it happened that one fine day or evening or afternoon or whatever it was. and it rocked!!

If you like Nirvana you probably want to slit your wrist and jerk off with a noose. Dave Grohl was a fool for not accepting his invitation to the heartbreakers.
i agree...dave grohl is the best drummer of our generation, but i disagree what you think tom petty is thinking. he has steve ferrone...and he plays perfectly with tom petty and the heartbreakers.
I forgot about this but I remember watching this the night it happened on SNL. Dave Grohl is so pro and Tom P is so cool you can't beat this unless Stevie Nicks was in the mix.
@suburbanindie Couldn't agree more. I love the Foo Fighters, and his new band, Them Crooked Vultures, is really awesome, too. Coming out from behind the drumset for a while let everyone see just how talented Dave is.
@247dexter247 Steve Ferrone smokes Dave Grohl, and Dave will tell you that if you ask him. Tom has since Stan Lynch left the Heartbreakers back in the day, has always used mostly Steve, but always had killer drummers. Because Tom requires dudes who don't bash cymbals every four bars. I'm not saying Dave isn't a great drummer and a brilliant musician, because he is, but Tom wasn't thinking "My band has never sounded this good!" Because it always sounds that good! He's a Travelling Willbury man!
@247dexter247 Also, he's played with just about every bad ass musician on the planet over the last 35 years.
Including Prince... look up rock n roll hall of fame while my guitar gently weeps... and check out Princes solo!
Also, Dave has Taylor Hawkins as his drummer. Taylor is a real bad ass as well... He was with Alanis Morissette for a while before he was with Foo. He's a well rounded player, but he earns that paycheck ROCKING THE F OUT with Foo Fighters! Love those guys.
Stephen Fronne hands down is a world renowned drummer. Has been around a long time and is a heavy hitter. Not to mention the fact that hes a good guy. Im not sure why he didnt appear on this gig. Ill ask him next time I see him
@erm2002 w/e you're the fag. I'll even bet you like receiving rather then giving. now if you would excuse me I've got better things to do then argue with a 45 year old fag
Tom should have hired Dave when he fired Stan. They would have held their consistent "big" drum sound. Dave is a much better drummer for the Heartbreakers then Steve F.
@tompetty1976 i dont know. steve ferrone has some damn good chops, and i like dave much better with foo fighters and especially with them crooked vultures
@marvelboy04 yeah but, compare steve and stan... it makes me want to cry... I think that's why the new album is mostly focusing on the lead guitar instead of drums...! LOL
are all of his cymbals 18+? if not he is using really thick crashes... and they sound amazing! Dave is a pro... he knows what hes doing no matter waht he plays...
After Stan Lynch parted company with Tom Petty (his then drummer) Tom rang dave (or rather his office) and asked if he'd play on the tv show saturday night live as they were all ready booked up, Dave being a big Petty fan was really keen to do the show and had a great time, this was grohls first public performance since Cobains suicide and was torn between playing for the heartbreakers or doing his own stuff (he'd just finished recording the first foo's album) lucky for us he picked the foo's
My understanding is that this occurred after Nirvana ended and before Foo Fighters came about. Dave went on tour with Tom Petty for a yearish and played on SNL with him.
I agree. I don't understand why he doesn't keep his one Tom high as well as his cymbals. It looked kick ass and he made himself appear crazy on it. He made light songs as good as metal. I miss that.
Dave is a great drummer! Period! BUT... he thinks he's so cool these days. Just look at the guy. Of course everyone has his one style but shit, in my opinion he has become what he used to hate: a rockstar with a big mouth but nothing really to say. And for Tom Petty and the heartbreakers: they are rock&roll because they don't wanna be cool! Miss you Howie! R.I.P.
@chielandelvis: i dont necessarily think grohl has become an arsehole, but his music has been way too mainstream after "the color and the shape"...too poppish and appears desperate for cash. his early stuff was much better--debut was the best. just my opinion.
nah man dave grohl is THE man, i mean if u think hes just a mainstream jockstrap then u dont know the real dave grohl. i mean yea he has fun with his rockstar status but i mean he is a hell of a musician, take a look at all his accomplishments, plus hes the nicest guy in rock
One of my best friends, back in high school wanted to be Dave Grohl...he set up his kit like Dave, which was uncomfortable as hell for him or anybody else playing that kit, with the hi hat stuck up in the air LOL...it does look cool though, and it obviously worked for Dave just fine! What a tight drummer. A tight and LOUD drummer!
i remember this being on comedy central and i had it on in the background and after about 2 minutes i thought to myself, wow thats a tight drum sound, so i looked over and wouldnt you know it, it was Grohl. go figure!
It would have been great for the Heartbreakers but bad for Dave because he wouldn't have a chance to become the big success he's been with the Foo Fighters. Petty was too established to use Dave as a songwriting partner, but since this was his last decent album (not an insult---he had more good ones than most) it might have helped that band.
I think your right in saying this was his last successful mainstream album, but it was not his last good one. Naturally they just got older and as a result you can't be pop stars forever. And Dave Grohl didn't play on the recordings just did this live gig i think, maybe one other, steve ferrone played on most of the album - hence keeping him would not have meant more albums like wildflowers.
my favorite Tom Petty song.......AND Dave Grohl drumming=EPIC!

are all of his cymbals 18+? if not he is using really thick crashes... and they sound amazing! Dave is a pro... he knows what hes doing no matter waht he plays...
butlering 1 year ago
I think his crashes are around 18" or 19" and his ride is a 22" : )

It's good but if we could see Honey Bee, Grohl goes apesh** on the drums!! Good stuff.
byrdsss 2 years ago
God damn it. Why isn't Honey Bee from SNL on here too?

Tom Petty = Genio
rogeliosarambeta 2 years ago
...And that my friends is how you play drums. Even a simple beat can MAKE OR BREAK a song. Mr. Grohl is an icon of a generation...
ForTheLove0fMusic 2 years ago 3
After Stan Lynch parted company with Tom Petty (his then drummer) Tom rang dave (or rather his office) and asked if he'd play on the tv show saturday night live as they were all ready booked up, Dave being a big Petty fan was really keen to do the show and had a great time, this was grohls first public performance since Cobains suicide and was torn between playing for the heartbreakers or doing his own stuff (he'd just finished recording the first foo's album) lucky for us he picked the foo's
jasethehair 2 years ago 4
My understanding is that this occurred after Nirvana ended and before Foo Fighters came about. Dave went on tour with Tom Petty for a yearish and played on SNL with him.
kalanisays 2 years ago
@kalanisays
No, he didn't tour w/ TP. As far as I can recall, SNL was his only performance as guest drummer.
Fakename70 1 year ago
I agree. I don't understand why he doesn't keep his one Tom high as well as his cymbals. It looked kick ass and he made himself appear crazy on it. He made light songs as good as metal. I miss that.
BPhire 2 years ago
i love how high dave always use to keep his cymbals...
i win the "most random" comment award...

chielandelvis 2 years ago
@chielandelvis: i dont necessarily think grohl has become an arsehole, but his music has been way too mainstream after "the color and the shape"...too poppish and appears desperate for cash. his early stuff was much better--debut was the best. just my opinion.
stonescourt3 2 years ago
First album was the best. Very raw and heavy.
outlaw6066 1 year ago
@stonescourt3
Agreed. The Foos fell off after TCATS, but, Probot was a welcomed change of pace though.
Fakename70 1 year ago
nah man dave grohl is THE man, i mean if u think hes just a mainstream jockstrap then u dont know the real dave grohl. i mean yea he has fun with his rockstar status but i mean he is a hell of a musician, take a look at all his accomplishments, plus hes the nicest guy in rock

Dave is the greatest drummer of this generation. Period.

Besides Danny Carey you mean. Regardless, I've been looking for this clip for over a year and hadn't seen it since it first aired in '94.

@RebelThoughts ditto!!....and then some! Dude Ooozes talent!!!

Though a simple basic rock beat, Dave seems to add something to this version that only true great drummers can do.
BaDeeRich 2 years ago 6
I don't think Dave's drumming style quite fits with Tom Petty's music -- although it does fit well on this particular song.
unknownkingdom 2 years ago 3
@unknownkingdom I agree. It's a little splashy. Too much openness in the pre and the chorus. I think he sounds fine in the verses though.
foodadventures 2 years ago
If tom only knew about the foo's track wheels, he'd have slammed that guitar onto dave's kit. but then again, they like each other
Captainplayhard 2 years ago
Tom doesn't mind, he didn't mind when RHCP ripped the cords to Dani California off of him.
tuuurster 2 years ago
One of my best friends, back in high school wanted to be Dave Grohl...he set up his kit like Dave, which was uncomfortable as hell for him or anybody else playing that kit, with the hi hat stuck up in the air LOL...it does look cool though, and it obviously worked for Dave just fine! What a tight drummer. A tight and LOUD drummer!

Only Dave Grohl can make such a simple beat sound so awesomeDamn! Im going to have this song stuck in my head all day.
biblesuck 2 years ago
i remember this being on comedy central and i had it on in the background and after about 2 minutes i thought to myself, wow thats a tight drum sound, so i looked over and wouldnt you know it, it was Grohl. go figure!
smallclone 2 years ago 2
I think Dave's kinda cool with the hi-hat at the same hight as his eyes.
Eyeswitch 2 years ago
Yeah it was after Kurt died. Cute little wave from Dave at the end - would have been a waste for Dave to join this band, given his talent.
Ntone606 2 years ago
are you kidding.... think about how honored dave was being invited to the heartbreakers.... common
droagan 2 years ago 3
Tom wanted Dave to be his permanent drummer.
xSeanDrumsx 2 years ago 4
it was actually rythm guitar
droagan 2 years ago
It would have been great for the Heartbreakers but bad for Dave because he wouldn't have a chance to become the big success he's been with the Foo Fighters. Petty was too established to use Dave as a songwriting partner, but since this was his last decent album (not an insult---he had more good ones than most) it might have helped that band.
altohart 2 years ago
I think your right in saying this was his last successful mainstream album, but it was not his last good one. Naturally they just got older and as a result you can't be pop stars forever. And Dave Grohl didn't play on the recordings just did this live gig i think, maybe one other, steve ferrone played on most of the album - hence keeping him would not have meant more albums like wildflowers.
