  • my favorite Tom Petty song.......AND Dave Grohl drumming=EPIC!

  • this was perform on november 1994 just seven months after kurt cobain suicide. dave grohl began to perform as a part time drummer of a Tom Petty and the heartbreakers

  • Comment removed

  • I've always loved "The Heartbreakers" and I'm a big Grohl fan. I saw this same show on the documentary, but they played "Honeybee", and Grohl tore it up!!! They sounded so good together! Anyone Know where i can find that video?

  • @aMidnightToker7 I've been looking for that video forever. Can't find it either dude.

  • @aMidnightToker7 Dave loved doing that one. It is on here somewhere. I've seen it.

  • 5 people are just mad Dave Grohl is cooler than them.

  • these 2 are my idols....

  • father and son

  • Will someone take that organ out of the pool? It's gonna get damaged! =P

  • Not often you see and band where the most famous and widely respected person is the drummer...

  • @TomFisherMusic Dave Grohl is great but I think Tom Petty has more than earned his respect. Even someone as good as Grohl had to be honored by an invitation to join The Heartbreakers. Glad he passed because Foo Fighters are GREAT!!!

  • @TomFisherMusic Eh...you don't know what you're talking about.

  • it is Grohl....in the Foo Fighters documentary, he talks about being asked to join the Heartbreakers.

  • Introduced by THE JESUS !!!!

  • This band hasn't been the same since Howie Epstein passed away. He is the bass player you see here.

  • also that wasnt dave grohl. someone is high

  • @eljono1 yes it is

  • @eljono1 yeah it is. its just that this is from like 1994-1995 or somethin like that.

  • loving that tone. waaaaaaaaaaaaa hhhhhhhhh waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh

  • That performance was just sick!

  • I like how dave waves at the end lol

  • They also played Honey Bee. Why the hell cant you find it on here? Petty is the man and Grohl isnt too far behind.

  • You don't know how it feels, you don't know how it feels, no you don't know how it feels......to be me......

  • What was the other more rockin' song they played with Dave Grohl and why can't I find it on You Tube?

  • i foun the audio of honey bee from this show, but i wanna see the video, anybody knows where the hell is it?

  • Dave Rocksssssssssssssssss

  • My two favorite musicians! :) Life could not get better! :)

  • Seems like Dave is sitting really low at his drum set. Like a kid playing drums. I kind of like it.

  • I do not understand how Grohl could fit in a band like this after playing with Nirvana. I could he hold himself from smashing everything!!!

  • @malaikanini Dave loves Tom Petty, at this point he'd moved from Nirvana to nirvana!

  • This video was right before Grohl decided to do Foo Fighters. Petty offered him the full time drummer slot and he declined to put out the first FF album.

    Good choice Dave :D

  • I didn't realize this ever happened. I got excited watching it just like it was a brand new video.

  • If you had never heard of Dave Grohl, you'd be like "man, that drummer is an attention whore"

  • it's good dave turned down tom petty or we wouldn't have foo fighters

  • WHAT HASN'T DAVE GROHL DONE???

  • Comment removed

  • @OhShiflett1 he hasnt done anything boring

  • @OhShiflett1

    oddly enough, your mom

  • there will always be a naysayer about dave grohl being up there with moon, bonham, the best of the rest...but geez, just wait another 20-30 yrs when dave's status IS legend...hell i'm throwing travis barker up on that pedestal too.

  • I wouldn't be able to move my arms fast enough to have my cymbals and hihat that high..

  • love it but thank god dave declined tom's permanent invite

  • @Vuaviator: I'll take Grohl behind the kit for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers over the Foo Fighters any day of the week.

  • Anyone know where I can get the Honey Bee footage?

  • @wiley666 not saying he isn't good, he is. He is very good. But to compare him (actually to say he is better than) Moon and Bonham? Sorry, but you're talking about two of the greatest drummers of all time - and I don't even like The Who. Not only were they amazing, they were totally influential. I'm sorry but Grohl hasn't really done anything groundbreaking since Nirvana, and even then it wasn't like he was treading new territory. He's a very good drummer.\

  • @nixon08 I have no doubt he can be compare with Moon and Bonham...he's one of the best of the history he's work on Scream, Nirvana, Foo fighters (he plays all the instruments in the first album and drums on The Colour and the shape) Queen Of Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Nine Inch Nails and even in this song proves that! I hate when the people don't want to compare good musician with legends like Bonham and Moon! Time pass and new talents appears...Dave it's one of them!

  • somebody post honeybee!!

  • I hate music wonks. Just stfu and stop debating who is a better whatever.

  • I wish someone would post the other song they did on SNL, "Honey Bee", Dave Grohl rocks the hell out of it!

  • @saintpatrick8908 Im trying to find that footage too - must be out there somewhere

  • thats the guy from transformers!

  • t.o.p.l.e.s.s. - topless.

  • @drernie3000 fa fa fooey?

  • @southerndandy89

    BA BA BOOEY!!!

  • You know how every Drummer today says that Keith moon, John Bohnam, ect. are the greatest drummers ever? well, we need to Add dave as the greatest among them

  • @nixon08 I don't think that's true. Dave King is kind of a hero for me, but I think he'd tell you that, past a certain level, drumming is as much about style as it is anything else. Dave Grohl isn't my favorite drummer or anything, but he is distinct and he knows how to play with a band. That's not just an "above average" thing to pull off.

  • @nixon08 have you heard the Queens of the Stone Age record he played on? Go listen to song for the dead and tell me Grohl "ain't that good".

  • @KamikaziPanda17 Aynsley Dunbar?

  • dave is superhuman.

  • Petty offered Grohl the job and he turned it down. Sure he sounded hard-edged?

  • @cykez well his friend just died and he said a lot times that he didnt want to play drums for a while due to memories with it.and he had other talents to express and thank god he went for guitar

  • I love seeing people argue over differences opinion, and then call each other out for doing the exact same thing.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain dude how does his stuff sound like pretentious? He just writes basic stuff that he likes and if has a message his pretty straight forward. And the Dylan thing he gained a lot of influence from him and he hasn't denied that at all. Also dude based on your screen name it appears you're a Nirvana fan and I'll say that they are one of the most overrated bands of all time.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain if your idol were alive he'd smack you.

  • Man he set the groove deep, no doubt. But damn he plays his cymbals high! lol.

  • If there's an SNL 35th anniversary celebration, I'll they'll be the musical guest :)

  • Nice song, but this is like bringing a machine gun to a tea party.

  • @nzmaximus It was real nice at beginning and end, but like 3/4's through Dave seemed a little to hard edged. Don't get me wrong he's awesome but Petyy is mellow.

  • I want HONEY BEE AS WELL!

  • Man he plays that hat high...that would bother me.

  • dave grohl drumming so powerful and dynamics . omg he's the great

    drummer in this world

  • This make sense. Petty wanted to recruite Grohl when Nirvana disbanded due to the Kurt Cobain's death.

  • what that was was rock n roll perfection, that's what it was. and Tom new it, Dave new it, and everybody knew it. and now i know it and you know it and that's what it was back before when it happened that one fine day or evening or afternoon or whatever it was. and it rocked!!

  • man, i want that jazzmaster! (and leslie, and tele lol)

  • i agree...dave grohl is the best drummer of our generation, but i disagree what you think tom petty is thinking. he has steve ferrone...and he plays perfectly with tom petty and the heartbreakers.

rock and roll lives forever...and so does pizza

  • Good thing Dave didnt take Toms invitation to be the permanent drummer! Then the Foo Fighters wouldnt exist! But this is an awesome video!!

  • john turturro hosted snl?

  • dave looks like alanis morrisette, play drum like an animal, but i like him very much...

  • Man that song has never sounded so true!!!!!

  • Boy is his high-hat high! I couldn't play it like that.

  • he still beats the shit out of the drums lol and its sounds so tight

  • I forgot about this but I remember watching this the night it happened on SNL. Dave Grohl is so pro and Tom P is so cool you can't beat this unless Stevie Nicks was in the mix.

  • his high hat is really high

  • what's the name of this tv show?

  • @yojoe71 SNL saturday night live

  • somehow the drums look to big for dave

  • Grohl + Petty = Amazing!

  • what year is this video from?

  • @guperro This is from 1994.

  • Tom Petty is a the real deal!

  • did foo fighters ever cover "change of heart" or was it just grhol who played with tom petty in that song along time ago, ahhhhhhhhh i dont remember.

  • Best version EVER. Love this song. Thank you so much.

  • I love me some Tom Petty....Dave Grohl on tom-toms gives me a boner...!

  • alot of chorus effect on the guitars

  • @612Crewz think it sounds more like a Leslie Vibratone

  • And that is why after this performance Dave got asked to join Tom Petty but he turned it down.

  • dave grohl is an al around talent, he can sing, play bass, lead , and drum you dont find musicians like that anymore

  • @theweddingsinger17 he also plays piano and trumpet

  • Would love if someone could send me the performance of honeybee if they can't post it on here!!

  • I love Tom Petty, but I'm glad Dave Grohl rejected the offer to be in the Heartbreakers. What a waste of talent that would've been.

  • @suburbanindie Couldn't agree more. I love the Foo Fighters, and his new band, Them Crooked Vultures, is really awesome, too. Coming out from behind the drumset for a while let everyone see just how talented Dave is.

  • Stephen fronne wasn't drumming because they were trying to get Grohl to join but he declined

  • Hopefully I'll be seeing Tom Petty perform live later this summer.

  • Tom is thinking at the end: "my band has never sounded so good before!" You can read it on his face! Dave Grohl! What a good vibe dude!

  • @247dexter247 You have to have a lot of faith in your project to turn down Tom Petty. Must've been hard to turn him down.

  • @247dexter247 Steve Ferrone smokes Dave Grohl, and Dave will tell you that if you ask him. Tom has since Stan Lynch left the Heartbreakers back in the day, has always used mostly Steve, but always had killer drummers. Because Tom requires dudes who don't bash cymbals every four bars. I'm not saying Dave isn't a great drummer and a brilliant musician, because he is, but Tom wasn't thinking "My band has never sounded this good!" Because it always sounds that good! He's a Travelling Willbury man!

  • @247dexter247 Also, he's played with just about every bad ass musician on the planet over the last 35 years.

Including Prince... look up rock n roll hall of fame while my guitar gently weeps... and check out Princes solo!

Also, Dave has Taylor Hawkins as his drummer. Taylor is a real bad ass as well... He was with Alanis Morissette for a while before he was with Foo. He's a well rounded player, but he earns that paycheck ROCKING THE F OUT with Foo Fighters! Love those guys.

  • @247dexter247 he looked pissed

  • RIP howie epstein

  • I'm a new fan of Tom Petty!! Loving his music!!!

  • Tom is a dude!

  • Stephen Fronne hands down is a world renowned drummer. Has been around a long time and is a heavy hitter. Not to mention the fact that hes a good guy. Im not sure why he didnt appear on this gig. Ill ask him next time I see him

  • @erm2002 ur a faggot

  • What's up Jacobzack? Are you still into banging fat truckers who listen to rap music? It's ok, you'll get over it sooner or later.

  • @erm2002 w/e you're the fag. I'll even bet you like receiving rather then giving. now if you would excuse me I've got better things to do then argue with a 45 year old fag

  • i want that jazzmaster!

  • Loved the video Tom Petty is the best have enjoyed his music for many years he is the best Paulette

  • Tom should have hired Dave when he fired Stan. They would have held their consistent "big" drum sound. Dave is a much better drummer for the Heartbreakers then Steve F.

  • @tompetty1976 i dont know. steve ferrone has some damn good chops, and i like dave much better with foo fighters and especially with them crooked vultures

  • @marvelboy04 yeah but, compare steve and stan... it makes me want to cry... I think that's why the new album is mostly focusing on the lead guitar instead of drums...! LOL

  • can someone post 'Honey Bee' from this same SNL show? Don't put SNL in the Title or Meta Tags, or NBC will take it down. Thanks in advance!!

  • lol look at daves face in the background at 0:31

  • Dave Grohl is simply the most diverse and talented musician of our time.I bet he'll be making great music 20 years from now...hopefully!

  • man i'd hate to feel what dave grohl's drumkits feel ouch

  • i love how you can barely see dave behind that kit lol... dave is the man...

  • did dave play on the recorded version too?

  • @44eelz No Steve Ferrone did.

  • The GREATEST version of this Great, GREAT song!!!

Thank you SO much for posting this, I NEED this now.

  • Dave Grohl is my hero.

  • Dave Grohl for every win... ever...

  • Boy, Dave's an animal!!!

  • That is his old Nirvana kit

  • 24" bass drum, either a 15" or 16" rack, an 18" floor, and a 8x14 snare. Amazing!!!

  • are all of his cymbals 18+? if not he is using really thick crashes... and they sound amazing! Dave is a pro... he knows what hes doing no matter waht he plays...

  • I think his crashes are around 18" or 19" and his ride is a 22" : )

  • It's good but if we could see Honey Bee, Grohl goes apesh** on the drums!! Good stuff.

  • God damn it. Why isn't Honey Bee from SNL on here too?

  • Tom Petty = Genio

  • ...And that my friends is how you play drums. Even a simple beat can MAKE OR BREAK a song. Mr. Grohl is an icon of a generation...

  • After Stan Lynch parted company with Tom Petty (his then drummer) Tom rang dave (or rather his office) and asked if he'd play on the tv show saturday night live as they were all ready booked up, Dave being a big Petty fan was really keen to do the show and had a great time, this was grohls first public performance since Cobains suicide and was torn between playing for the heartbreakers or doing his own stuff (he'd just finished recording the first foo's album) lucky for us he picked the foo's

  • My understanding is that this occurred after Nirvana ended and before Foo Fighters came about. Dave went on tour with Tom Petty for a yearish and played on SNL with him.

  • @kalanisays

No, he didn't tour w/ TP. As far as I can recall, SNL was his only performance as guest drummer.

  • I agree. I don't understand why he doesn't keep his one Tom high as well as his cymbals. It looked kick ass and he made himself appear crazy on it. He made light songs as good as metal. I miss that.

  • i love how high dave always use to keep his cymbals...

i win the "most random" comment award...

  • Dave is a great drummer! Period! BUT... he thinks he's so cool these days. Just look at the guy. Of course everyone has his one style but shit, in my opinion he has become what he used to hate: a rockstar with a big mouth but nothing really to say. And for Tom Petty and the heartbreakers: they are rock&roll because they don't wanna be cool! Miss you Howie! R.I.P.

  • @chielandelvis: i dont necessarily think grohl has become an arsehole, but his music has been way too mainstream after "the color and the shape"...too poppish and appears desperate for cash. his early stuff was much better--debut was the best. just my opinion.

  • First album was the best. Very raw and heavy.

  • @stonescourt3

Agreed. The Foos fell off after TCATS, but, Probot was a welcomed change of pace though.

  • nah man dave grohl is THE man, i mean if u think hes just a mainstream jockstrap then u dont know the real dave grohl. i mean yea he has fun with his rockstar status but i mean he is a hell of a musician, take a look at all his accomplishments, plus hes the nicest guy in rock

  • Dave is the greatest drummer of this generation. Period.

  • @RebelThoughts

    damn right

  • @RebelThoughts

Besides Danny Carey you mean. Regardless, I've been looking for this clip for over a year and hadn't seen it since it first aired in '94.

  • @RebelThoughts ditto!!....and then some! Dude Ooozes talent!!!

  • Though a simple basic rock beat, Dave seems to add something to this version that only true great drummers can do.

  • I don't think Dave's drumming style quite fits with Tom Petty's music -- although it does fit well on this particular song.

  • @unknownkingdom I agree. It's a little splashy. Too much openness in the pre and the chorus. I think he sounds fine in the verses though.

  • If tom only knew about the foo's track wheels, he'd have slammed that guitar onto dave's kit. but then again, they like each other

  • Tom doesn't mind, he didn't mind when RHCP ripped the cords to Dani California off of him.

  • One of my best friends, back in high school wanted to be Dave Grohl...he set up his kit like Dave, which was uncomfortable as hell for him or anybody else playing that kit, with the hi hat stuck up in the air LOL...it does look cool though, and it obviously worked for Dave just fine! What a tight drummer. A tight and LOUD drummer!

  • i remember this being on comedy central and i had it on in the background and after about 2 minutes i thought to myself, wow thats a tight drum sound, so i looked over and wouldnt you know it, it was Grohl. go figure!

  • I think Dave's kinda cool with the hi-hat at the same hight as his eyes.

  • Yeah it was after Kurt died. Cute little wave from Dave at the end - would have been a waste for Dave to join this band, given his talent.

  • are you kidding.... think about how honored dave was being invited to the heartbreakers.... common

  • Tom wanted Dave to be his permanent drummer.

  • it was actually rythm guitar

  • It would have been great for the Heartbreakers but bad for Dave because he wouldn't have a chance to become the big success he's been with the Foo Fighters. Petty was too established to use Dave as a songwriting partner, but since this was his last decent album (not an insult---he had more good ones than most) it might have helped that band.

  • I think your right in saying this was his last successful mainstream album, but it was not his last good one. Naturally they just got older and as a result you can't be pop stars forever. And Dave Grohl didn't play on the recordings just did this live gig i think, maybe one other, steve ferrone played on most of the album - hence keeping him would not have meant more albums like wildflowers.

  • it's actually in '94. the bonus cd from the 4 disc set shows the honey bee one is from '94 and this is the same night.

  • does anybody have honey bee?
