@ezayi You're such a joke...but that spanish phrase (which anyone can look up by googling it) nicely describes you. You're a weak person and a complete goof. Lol.
would have even more control and subsequently more power. Agassi said in his book that when he changed strings late in his career, he couldnt miss a shot and won rome.i'm hiting shots at 43 that were impossible 10 years ago , this new technology feels like cheating.Nadal and Novak have taken advantage of the change, there not greats the strings are.
When Becker roared back in this semi-final, it was one of the great comebacks. But in the final against Sampras, Beckers first serve in the first set was something like 30'something %. Becker really choked in the final. Still, I liked Beckers style. He could really move for a big guy with little feet, haha
Years after that match Agassi told Becker how he managed to beat him so many times despite they were at the same level. Boris would stick his tongue out before the toss and point at where he was gonna send the ball. Agassi would read it and make Becker's best shot look harmless. There you go, after that Boris kept his tongue in but it was already too late.
Well, when Sampras had his best time, Becker has past his best time. So you cant compare Becker and Sampras. Becker was at his best time the best tennis player in the world thats for sure. He is a great champion never gave up big heart. And he changed the game only the best can do that. Who knows if they never changed balls and racket material he was much longer the best player and he was several years the best player.
Yes you are right, Andre had beaten Becker so many times before this match. Somehow in the middle of the second set Andre lost his concentration. He was probably thinking of what's going to happen if he meets Pete in the finals. I love Andre! but against Pete on Wimbledon? not even Boris could stop him!
yea followed by ridiculous, near impossible angles created by this topsin, superb drop shots, tactical backhand slices, unmatched ability to turn defense into offense, catching opponents off guard by flattening out his shots (especially on the backhand) and the ability to finish at the net.
Do you even watch tennis? Doesn't seem like it. Saying Nadal only hits topspin forehands is like saying all Michael Jordan did was dunk. Learn the game.
@Eric0816 still the qualituy of that topspin forhand is so great, that surpasses the game of Becker and Agassi. If they were to play him at their prime, they wouldn't stand a chance...not to mention Novak
@dgolijan On what surface? Agassi would hurt Nadal on US Open or faster hard courts, and Becker would mince him up on classic grass and indoors.
The difference in court conditions was huge compared to today. Today's game is basically played on courts that approximate the slow hard courts to medium-fast clay courts of the 90's and before. You don't see truly fast hard courts anymore, grass was changed to play clay like, and indoor has all but disappeared.
@dgolijan Are you serious? Nadal is a great player, but c'mon man. Becker and Agassi are masters at the game, and if they played Nadal at their prime, with the court surfaces like they were in the late '70's and '90's, each player stood a chance of beating Nadal - no question. And Novak - lol. Good lord man, he'd be eaten alive.
@Kommaseir Novak is playing brutal tennis this year....tennis that no one has ever seen before - monster returns, brutaly takes control of the point even when it seems he is about to lose it, superb backhand...only 1 loss....and now...he is going to win Motreal...later the US Open is his...I uderstand that people from that generation(everyone exept the younger population) finds hard to believe that tennis has evolved, but it has.
@dgolijan tennis has evolved true, in that the racquets and strings get better, nutrition and fitness gets better and so on - but the talent? Not so much. I'd love to see Novak serve and volley (not just return the ball a million times) against Becker, Edberg, McEnroe or Borg with all things being equal. He'd lose in straight sets in under an hour.
@Kommaseir There is a reason why the serve-voley tennis is not used anymore....its because the baseline shots with spin and power are more effective, Novak goes to the net to volley only when he has to. Why would novak only serve and volley when there is a more effective way to play tennis?? Volleys are still being played, just not as much...Novak wouldn't have to adapt to their game....he would kill the players from that time with his returns and lobs
@dgolijan You think it's more effective? How? By being a wall and returning ball after ball vs. coming into the net with a great approach shot and volleying it right away to win the point? How is volleying less effective? Today's modern day approach to tennis is low margin for error, hit the ball hard - but with massive spin to stay in the point and get everything back. Novak's style, I'm sorry to say, is just like every other junior I see now a day - except he hits harder and with more spin.
@Kommaseir That's not entirely coreect sir. Precision of the baseline strokes has also being improved over the years and todays tennis is more demanding regarding conditioning (beacause of the speed of the shots). Today's tennis is not only more consistent, but it is also more dinamic. Regarding Novak....with his returns he is complitetly resilient to service volley play. Today's players are more able to lov and hit very presice baseline shots, which neutralizes the service volley...
@dgolijan Again, serve and volley is no less effective than simply being able to run down every ball and hit it back. String, racquet technology and fitness all have to do with that. BUT - if the serve and volley game was taught and if it was played by someone as talented as McEnroe, Becker or Edberg in today's game, I argue they would be extremely effective. NONE of today's players have the touch of the greats. Get ready for Tsonga to rule the next 5 years of boring tennis.
@Kommaseir soooo...what....the game just sudenly spit out the serve volley style for nothing??? ... i dont think so. Regarding Tsonga....he is 26 years old....novak is 24 and rafa is 25 - compare them to him...
@dgolijan No, they didn't spit it out...no one is teaching it. Go to any tennis academy, university, or college and you will notice NO ONE teaching it. What's being taught today is...run down every shot, put massive spin, and hit the ball back as hard as possible.
@dgolijan Well, I'd probably have to do a documentary to find that out. But, I think it's because tennis, like any other sport, is going for a technique with the highest margin for error. What's drilled into young players are that unforced errors are extremely bad (i.e. don't take chances) which is why I think no one dares it.
@dgolijan One last reason is also because the courts are slower, way slower, and the balls are slower. Every court is like a clay court. Case in point, I think Nadal, in the '80's or '90's, would have been a great clay court champion - but no way on this earth would have he achieved the results he did in Wimbledon or even some of the hard court surfaces. An amazing player - but no where near a Laver, McEnroe or Sampras.
@dgolijan This is just a fact. Google head grounds person Wimbledon. The grass is absolutely different that it was in the '80's and '90's. This is not speculation - it's fact. Google Jim Curley , tournament director of the US open too. The courts are slower - this is an absolute certainty.
@dgolijan Also check out a site called top tennis training . There is a great, and recent article on the subject of serving a volleying. Edberg, Becker and Sampras are in it. There are some great video's in the article as well. Look up 'Who Killed the Art of Serve and Volley?'
@Kommaseir i will check the article out...but every unforced error is a lost point you know...I find the serve volley play to be unusable againts today's greats...after all...the player that are using serve-volley are not at the top
One of the most memorable matches I've ever seen. For a set and a half Agassi made Becker look like a fool. Then Boris broke serve and held up his arms like he'd won the match and people laughed. When Becker ran away with the tiebreaker, Agassi was stunned and dropped serve in the first game of the third. He pulled himself together, but couldn't get back in the set. Becker's confidence and his game soared. Both held into the fourth set tiebreaker, and Becker rain away with that and the match.
In Agassi's book, he says that he started thinking about meeting Sampras in the final and lost concentration. That, coupled with how Becker changed up his game midway through the match led to Agassi losing. And considering Agassi had beaten Becker eight straight times until then, it's quite plausible that was the reason.
just watch how Boris mixing his backhands , mostly slices down the line and cross court . Only one top spin during whole points. One slice cross , one down the line ,short , long .well done Boris
That moment...when Boris raised his hands at 2/6 2/4 was one of my favourites in tennis history. And he was right, after thet he won the match. Phenomenal... My Idol back then
It think Becker meant in in an ironic way. Up to that point nothing was working and it was the first time he looked somewhat competitive. At that moment no one thought that Becker would come back and win the match.
@hebgab wat i loved about becker was he was talented enough to improve his baseline game to match the modern day players of that time such as agassi. He could beat you in many ways during a rally not just at the net which made him a more dangerous player. His 1996 aus open win is a case in point.

@hebgab he changed how he was playing in this match and changed the momentum, serve and volley was getting killed so used his power from the back and he got the win.

With Nadal you have high topsin forehand to the opponents backhand followed by another high topsin forehand, finished with a high topsin forehand.
