  • That mic was formality; he was a notorious canon. Thanks RM!

  • I bet that the 1 dislike is a registered Democrat - most likely a useful idiot or OWS supporter.

  • @AktionT4 Not me -- I'm a good Democrat and Liberal and I'll take Robert Merrill over Christina, the late Whitney, or any pop singer any day.

  • Thank you Robert Merrill: Your memory and your voice will live forever!

  • Attention Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, and Marvin Gaye: This is how you sing the national anthem.

  • The right way to sing our Anthem. Also listen to Jan Peerce's. Lesser singers doing this, especially pop singers, should be gassed.

  • This man Sings this song as it should be sang! Now the have brain dead drug using burnouts like Meriah Carrey and Whitney Houston butchering it like it was some sort of pop song.

  • @compukenny Absolutely. Thank you for your comment!

  • Yankee Stadium!!!!!

  • David -

Thank you for your interest and effort to keep our anthem alive and well.

We need help defending the flag and country, today, tomorrow and everyday.

You and others like you are to be admired.

    Dave

  • I continually direct people here just to hear this, the definitive version of the anthem.

  • @ImDavidGurney

Just a note to keep the correct my userid to gentamicinman

  • @ImDavidGurney The NY Yankees used to play a different, and if possible, better rendition before home games. That's why I came looking for it. (BTW, I am a Red Sox fan, but give the Yankees their props.)

  • theres to much music in the background!

  • Thank you all for your continued interest and enjoyment of this great vocalist and his respect for our National Anthem. God Bless the United State, the memory of Robert Merrill and each of you!

at wikipedia under Robert_Merrill there is a lot of interesting material, including this quote: "When you sing the anthem, there's a legitimacy to it. I'm extremely bothered by these different interpretations of it."

  • NO one should sing our National Anthem unless he has a voice like this. IT IS NOT A POP SONG MOVING UP THE CHARTS!. It is our National Anthem. I mute the sound whenever some imbescile comes out to make a travesty of it. Roseanne Barr should've done jail time. I miss Robert Merrill. He did it proud!

  • @AnnieLaurieScottie uhhh...a voice like this comes around once a generation...I would say that standard is a little high lol

  • @zbrownie25 , BS! There are plenty of voices around who can sing it as it should be sung. I'm not asking for Ponselle every time; I am asking for RESPECT and a voice that can can carry it off with the force and beauty it requires. I would say you have completely misread my comment, but hey! What can I expect? LOL

  • The reason Aguilara and all the others foul up our country's National Anthem is that they never learned American History in school. Instead of political correctness, teach young Americans the lesson of American Exceptionalism. Back in 1776 we told the British Empire and the rest of the world that through our elected representatives we were capable of self government, We've never looked back and the rest of the world is still trying to catch up!

  • Now this is the way to sing the Star Bangled Banner...unlike those who try to sing it today.

  • The Christina Aguilara version of the Star Spangled Banner during the Super Bowl sent chlls up my spine---but NOT in a good way. This is how the National Anthem should be sung. Not like a dirge, or something you can't even recognize.

  • the King of the Star Spangled Banner..I had to hear this the right way after watching Christina Aguilara butcher it at the Super Bowl 2011

  • @rickosports

Thanks for the compliment on the Robert Merrill "Star Spangled Banner" - he's great and his rendition is fantastic.

  • This is the most freaking ultra powerful version of Star Spangled Banner I've ever heard...not only the voice is powerful or the music is powerful, but the whole package is SO "traditional American-ish" which is exactly what this song is about. Another interesting thing is that nowadays so many celebrity singers do this song with high notes or some fancy stuff but they don't even have 0.0001% of the power of Robert Merrill while he is singing LOW, and this shows the true power of a baritone!!

  • a friend of mine suggested the star bangled banner was too diffuclt to sing and perhaps we should change our national anthem. i say if you can't sing it ,don't. or listen to robert merrill sing it. no one sings it like he does. not to mention he is one the greatest baritone in the history of opera.

  • Merrill was 75 at the time!

  • the best rendition by one of the greatest
