Sadly yes, Chris did pass away during the taping of this sketch. After eating two dozen hamburger paddies and countless hot dogs, we mistook Chris' pleas for help as "acting", since it was in the script after all.

We thought he was doing a magnificent job, smiling to ourselves at how authentic and genuine-looking the drowning scene played out, attributing it to Chris' brilliants as an improv actor, not taking into consideration that after eating all the food and jumping into the deep end he would cramp up and begin to actually drown.

Later, we found a note in which Chris detailed his intention of drowning himself for the sake of the scene, which would explain the line @ 2:36 "Leigh... No, you couldn't handle it... JOHN!" as it was not in the original script, and was something Chris improved with his final breath, finally drowning after eight and a half hours of filming.
