There was one time I tried to play this stage, and the stage itself never loaded--just Sonic and the background. So Sonic immediately fell to his death the moment the stage began.

Looks like you're palying the original American version. I noticed every remake since has had the Japanese soundtrack only until the recent smartphone (and iPad) version, which has both...but you'd see the D-Pad and the jump button in the corners.
