  • @ahmedelkahef If you are having a hard time with the word problems in this video, you may need to first watch and study the "Basic Math" videos I have here. Also watch the algebra videos that were made before this one (use playlist to see). Downloading the printable math notes will be helpful too. Some are free, others you would need to pay for (or get the DVD to get both full video lessons and notes).

  • @groundzerobuild I think the Ancient Hindi, Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Mayans, Babylonians, and others would disagree with you. There is no such thing as "Islamic" math. Islam is a religion. Ancient Arabs did make huge contributions to mathematics, and that *IS* being taught in classrooms all over the world. Visit your local library to read all about it!

  • @groundzerobuild You REALLY need to read up on your history before typing anything. It shows your ignorance. Arab contributions to mathematics PRE-DATES the creation of Islam by CENTURIES. I am not in a dangerous position, since I have not done anything to offend Islam. It has nothing to do with my "ego." The Hindu-Arabic Numerals don't "belong" to Muslims. Ancient Arabs (not Muslims, since there were no Muslims at the time) got the Numerals from the Hindus.

  • I'm not going to watch this all, but in the first example, by common sense, l = length and w = width (after all, you said it was a formula, not MERELY an equation, which invites us to make the letters "stand for something") in which case your formula gives the perimeter. So why choose A for the other variable, which suggests area? Also, with all the ways you fiddled with the answer, why avoid the most obvious, cross out the remaining 2's and make it A/2 - l? I mean, it's RIGHT, but gee!

  • @gmsherry1953 I did not state the formula was for perimeter of a rectangle. It is just a generic formula. You should NEVER assume a formula (or variables) stands for anything other than what it is stated. There are MANY ways to state the final answer, I was not avoiding anything. Your answer is OK. It has 2 terms, and usually, one tries to get a single term answer, when possible. By the way, what may be "obvious" to you may not be for someone else.

  • Hi videomathtutor I love your videos I am brushing up on my algebra before I take my placement test to start college next week. I didn't quite get how to convert the decimals into fractions. You say to use 10 to the first 10 to the second 10 to the 3rd and so on to determine how many decimals to move over..I don't quite get that part perhaps I'm a little dumb haha which is quite possible i suck at math..anywho I have understood everything else really well thank you for the help!

    What you say (in VERY bad English!) is also correct. What I tried to do was create ONE term. You solution has 2 (and there is nothing wrong with this). I also stress in the video that there is more than one solution.

  • You are correct, I was changing the fraction to a decimal and then computing. Just keeping 5/9 as fraction, completing the parenthesis and then multiplying and reducing, it comes out correct. Thanks again! : )

  • On example #3

    5(F-32)/9=C is more elegant and precise to me. Plugging in a random number such as C=2 gives you the answer F=35.6. Plugging in the number found for F in my answer gives you exactly C=2. With answer shown in the video, making 5/9 a decimal and using the same variables C=2 and F=35.6 when plugging does not compute back exactly 2.

  • Well, obviously you won't get back the same answer if you make 5/9 into an APPROXIMATE decimal. Keeping it a fraction will yield the same answer.

  • At 02:48, I believe there should be brackets around the "A-2l" to indicate that this portion of the equaton must be solved first.

  • Huh? No brackets are needed. First off, the formula is already solved. Second, the fraction bar takes the place of any grouping symbol.

  • My previous statement was made in anticipation that at a future time if the numerical values for "A" and "l" are given then it will be known that the substraction in the numerator should occur first. That is all.

    Well, you can "work backwards" and start with the formula we ended up with, then solve for A or the lower case L. In any event, brackets (or parentheses) would not be needed, at first, since the fraction bar groups them. If you were then to multiply both sides by something, THEN you can enclose the numerator with the brackets or parentheses.

  • well if it was 13.333.. then it would just be 3/9. and 9*13. so 120/99 or 40/3. That's just basic math.

  • There is no specific grade level for my videos since different schools do math at different paces. This is a beginning algebra video for those just starting out.

  • there is a much easyer way to do the .333.. thing into a fraction or any repeting decimal. just take what's repeting (3 in this case) and make the denominator a 9 for each digit u have, so one 9 here. 3/9 or 1/3.

    ex: .147147147147...

    147/999 ( and then u can use your wonderful ti-83 to reduce) 49/333

    ex: .23232323...

    23/99

  • Well, the way I show it works for ALL cases. For example, what if there is a whole number in front? Ex: 13.555555... or how about something like: 0.022222222...?

  • logarithms are even harder and trigonometry functions.

  • Logs are easy. Most teachers make them hard to learn. Trig is a bit tougher, but not THAT bad. I hope to eventually have videos in these areas.

  • Yah, if it was 13.555... it would be 122/9. That's is just basic math. And for .02222 you can just use your Ti-83:P so its 1/45. So you do have a point there but mine is if the number is sumthing you can use what i did with. Its much easyer and faster. So just chill!:)

  • It is not for any specific class. It is a general Algebra lesson to help you with solving linear word problems. This is usually covered in Algebra 1 or the beginning of a college algebra class.

    Actually, I think I can do more good by being a math tutor and running my math websites than by being a teacher. A teacher can help a classroom of students. I help thousands of not only students, but also teachers, tutors, and parents of home school kids. Oh, I also do quite a bit in my life than just tutor. This is a job for me. I have a personal life too, which is amazing for a nerd such as myself.

    C = 5/9 (F-32) is the formula for how you convert degrees Farenheit to degrees Celsius.

    Of course

    F = 9/5 C + 32 is Celsius to Farenheit
