You are the closest I've ever heard to Geddy himself. I'm quite speechless! I've passively "studied" Geddy's bass lines for years (I'm a fan and drummer). Clearly, you've worked very hard. THAT lick (at around 1:48) has taunted me for years.. any chance you could break it down for me? Also a demo on Ged's fingerpicking style (double stops and muting) would be incredibly appreciated! Keep up the really great work!!
Thank you for that generous compliment. And you're right, I have spent an inordinate amount of time picking these bass lines apart in an attempt to learn and play them as closely to the recorded parts as possible.
I would love to to more tutorial stuff but, unfortunately, I'm self taught and am not analytical at all when it comes to my own playing. I have great difficulty explaining parts and techniques in detail. I just do what I do. I could, however do a "slowed down" demo
Yes, if you could simply slow it way down, I'm sure I could get it.. Same with the double-stop stuff. Is that what you call it? Like if you were to loop the first two bars, and play it much slower.. then maybe I could finally see how it's done. Any kinds of theoretical explanations would be lost on me anyway :) You're the man, TJH!
@TJH3113 You became this good just by teaching yourself? I can't imagine teaching myself bass without your videos to help with the songs that I would like to be able to play.
I am self-taught. When I was in my teen I'd play 4-6 hours a day, especially during summer breaks. I'd mostly learn songs that I thought were challenging and play along with records.
I started out liking KISS, then Black Sabbath and finally RUSH. I played quite a bit of southern rock in the first band I was in. I discovered RUSH within a year and a half of starting to play bass.
@wnils Sorry, that 1:37 was just an arbitrary number. I would refer to that his triplet riff. I think it's like the cornerstone of his style. He hinted at it on Farewell To Kings and really brought it out in Hemispheres. He uses it Freewill (solo) etc...it's the basis of YYZ. I heard you use it in Emotion Detector during the solo part.
@TJH3113 I think after watching it again, the MalNar-like riff is the little movement at 1:22 It just has that alternating index and middle finger rake that makes MalNar all that it is. :)
Wooooonderful

This one and Prime Mover lead the way for MalNar. Got to love Ged

@wnils You're right. There's a riff in Big Money at the end of the guitar solo where he uses the same technique.
TJH3113 1 year ago
Was waiting for the finger raking and you freakin nailed it! Nice technique!

@wnils Not sure where you mean. I don't know how to post those time thingys, do you? Like 1:37 & such.

@TJH3113 Never mind I just did it.
TJH3113 1 year ago
Yea.....you did it. I am talking about the opening riff that gets repeated in lots of places as well as the flurry at 1:48 ish
